PS3 homebrew 2 Player Pong v1.0 |
Ó
You better believe it, people. FreePlay has opened up the door to PlayStation 3 homebrew with his BD-J Devkit which was released about a week ago. Now, homebrew dev Dragula96 has released more proof that the Java concept works by launching his first PS3 homebrew game.
Simply called the PS3 Homebrew 2 Player Pong 1.0, this one will have you playing the grand-daddy of all games with a friend. The game is still in its early stages and needs some more tweaks, but it does a great job of drilling home the point that there's a lot of potential in PS3 homebrew.
To start playing your first homebrew game on the PS3, just follow these simple instructions from the dev himself:
Just extract the and put the AVCHD folder and everything in it on USB pen drive root directory.
Then place USB pen drive on ps3, go to video and run the AVCHD folder.
The source has been included in the downloads, so feel free to examine it and see if it gives you any cool ideas. Please go through the readme before proceeding. Enjoy!

yet sounds fun lol.
homebrew games sound koolio, but im still no taking my chances yet.
plus atm id rather play pong on my psp since its on the go type a thing.
with out a doubt tho, this is a good start.
@ Apeaggedon, not taking your chances, theres nothing to lose mate.
It works ok but this is some weird exploit and i wonder if it will lead us anywhere.
Its pointless nerding time
cause you cant do what these nerds can do.
i give them mad props.
BOO THIS MAN!
No, FreePlay didn't. PS3hax (or whatever there called) did and FreePlay improved on it by releasing a Devkit. Honestly, you've got to be kidding right? Giving all credit to FreePlay? Sure he deserves some credit but who actually got this exploit working? Not him. This post is very misleading and does not credit the original person who actually found and made the first homebrew work on it.
If they port this emulator (written in java), then we will have nes!

Exciting stuff. Very simple, of course, and an easy exploit that isn't a huge surprise to anybody, but still a nice little window in.
Has anybody seen a technical spec or benchmark on how powerful BD's Java can be? I know we're working on the low end of horsepower for sure, but is there any chance we could go as far as a NES or SCUMM VM emulator on BD-J (assuming the ROMs were stored as CABs or something, or maybe have a baked-in executable for each game you wish to play?) Can we expect to see a homebrew gaming/application sprout up around just the exploit of BD-J? Or is this (as I had read earlier) a very rudimentary implementation of Java (I read that it's based on Java 1.3, but that it's also a version of the J2ME found in cellphones?)
Is there any kind of technical document on BD-J or a breakdown of what's been done with it? I'd like to know more.
"im still no taking my chances yet."
Chances of what, using the built-in official support for BD-J?
Don't credit me. I just put the tools together. They already existed, and so did the knowledge of how to get this to run.
PONG on my PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just what I never wanted to play!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
problem with it is you can't have the two games on the same drive.. The games files have the same file names, so it asks you to replace the other game you have. So only one game at a time for the moment.
why cant i get the player 2 paddle to move...
i noticed no one that actually used this commented. i guess im the first.
it works EXCEPT its a 2 player game and the 2nd player paddle wont budge.
you just got respect from me.......... its not easily attained
btw its bcuz you had enough ballz 2 say that they SHOULDNT credit you (unlike all those ppl that cry they sent in a tip 2 qj first)
seriously thank you
wow thats just ..... wow
irony at its finest
Putting the power of the Cell to good use.
as opposed to using it for something like Folding@Home
So the PS3's been hacked.. but no functionality of hacked games.. great balance! I hope it stays this way, though I do wish we improve on this exploit so we see some truly unique homebrow apps.
square is up and x is down for the other paddle
Sony's probably making fun of us as they read this stuff because how we are eager and hungry for homebrew scene on ps3 yet we have to satisfy ourselves with this kind of bs...
you have to use one controller? i guess thats bc its going thru video...
i dont like this at all. non of the games look great. the only thing i could see being good about this would be running ISOs. i dont want that to happen though. homebrewing killed a lot of the great games that could have come to the psp. i dont want that to happen to the ps3. BUT a lot of people dont have the means to download a 25GB game. so who knows.
How do you "run the AVCHD folder"? Do you copy the folder or something?
Actually QJ never ever reads tips at all.
