PS3 hacking challenge ends without a winner

Lucky kid.Remember that contest where you stood to win a PS3 if you managed to hack it? The tricked-out one with a 160GB HDD and pre-installed Linux (Fedora core 5 PPC + PS3 add-on), an HDMI cable, and a free copy of Resistance: Fall of Man?

Well, the deadline's come and gone and nobody proved to be l337 enough. So, what happens to the PS3 that was at stake? It seems the guy running the contest has decided to just give the mean Sony machine to his kid Kaede. He's also offering a shell user account on the PS3 for one more month to those who can afford to get one for US$ 20.

If you want to check out what some of the hopefuls tried to make it through the PS3's defenses, just to go to the ACBM forums. Those interested in the attack logs can also e-mail the guy who ran the whole contest. The link to the ACBM forums plus info on how to contact the guy who ran the contest can be found in the "via" link.

PS3 = PWNT

Okay this just proves that hackers cannot by pass the PS3 and gain access to the Root system. The ps3 would make a great cheap server.

hahaha

this proves no one gave a flying ***** about about the ps3 because everyone was either playing gow or zelda or both

not true

that doesnt prove anything about the ps3 itself. It proves that linux is the most secure and toughest OS to hack out of any available OS. Which many people already knew. Another reason why PS3 is great :)

idiots....

If you actualy go to the website and read what its all about you would know a few things. First, this demonstrates nothing concerning the PS3 as its the Linux that is the only thing being accessed not the PS3 OS (if you can call it that) Second, security was "hardened" by this guy in that he parcel wrappped every single frickin file, only has 4 ports open with ssh only being one that you can seriously use. SSH is secure by nature of it being ssh. A lot of dummy data inserted like ports that are open but are really just honey pots. Scripts get screwed up because he sends buffer overflows to you as soon as you connect to his ports. This doesn't screw up your computer but it does screw up the scripts you are sending in the form of packets. It's not the PS3 that is being tested, just shows that the PS3 is a power house in that it can run a server running Linux 24/7.

okay

i'd say repeat this hacking challenge when the ps3 is realeased first. Europe has smarter people in france or germany and i'm sure that no one even tried to hack the ps3. ppl got other problems and what can a baby called Kaede do with a ps3 with 120gb and resistance? Kaede's daddy is a happy guy right now.
