PS3 hacking ahoy! Overflow .tiff exploit discovered |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Exploit, Hackers, Hex, TIFF, XMB
Ó

Recently Team ICE discovered that they could crash a Sony PlayStation 3 using a well-crafted .TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) file loaded in the Sony PS3's XMB. And the team has released that same .TIFF to the public yesterday, targeted at Sony next-generation consoles running on firmware version 2.10, regardless if it's PAL or NTSC native.
Similar to past revelations, this .TIFF exploit does cause an overflow, only this one wrought havoc on the Sony PlayStation 3's heap data area. Some have also noted that the file released contains the words "Tavis Ormandy" in hex code - a misspelling of Travis Ormandy, a member of Google's Security Team, we speculate - which somehow links this to the .TIFF jailbreaking of the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, though coincidental.
Team ICE calls it a heap overflow and will permit other aspirant hackers on injecting simple code if they know the backend number and what calls to make. However, they didn't attempt to test the full potential of the .TIFF exploit because they lack the resources to do so.
But the team made it clear that PlayStation ISOs cannot be played with this exploit - at least not yet. They say that hackers might need Sony's PlayStation 3 Software Development Kit (SDK) to expand upon this latest exploit and see how far they can push with homebrew development.

what's so unlikable about buying a console, buying games for it, and downloading additional legit features from time to time that you have to tinker with something that is working properly and is secured?... it's a simple as that and my PS3 experience is surely not lacking right now and will get better and better as more improvements in games library and console features come.
there is no need for this, i'm sorry but that is my opinion.
if it ain't broke don't fix it, more often than not you'll mess it all up.

the PSP is so much better with it and this on the PS3 will increase sales rapidly.

Again, normal people DO NOT crack/hack their consoles, so it's not like it would destroy, for exemple, the wii's popularity, but we're talking about PS3s, and big gamers are on it, and WE can hack/crack. Worst than that, we can't stop ourselves from cracking if there is a way, lol. So no crack/hack/chips is the best, lol. I mean, at least for now. (I'll change my mind on this when I'll have bought more than 10-15 games, lol)

and i say it doesn't need it, so don't go judging people and saying what they do or don't know.
would you like me to stereotype you and say that you want the PS3 hacked because you're to cheap or too poor to buy actual games?
No.. you wouldn't like that... and I won't say that to anyone anyway cause that is not true... and that goes with what you said as well, it is not true.

NOT FOR ISO's I would as much as any one would enjoy not killing the most powerful gaming machine on the planet. Its just everything else im interested in like sendeng music or movies to a friend online strait from the HDD or along with of blu-ray live, we could have the PS3 convert and compress DVD's into the PSP with ease or just imagine if they made something like IRshell for the PS3 or even emulators would also be fun but i was just trying to say that it has unlimited potential for doing things a gaming console was never meant to do. I AM COMPLETELY AGAINST PIRATING FOR THE PS3!

but i guess you also know that together with the progress of homebrew on the ps3 comes the boost of piracy as well... this are directly related and the growth of one is the growth of another.
there are never win-win situations in life and if there are any these are mostly too good to be true... if you get something you tend to give up something... the smart thing to do is to weigh the pros and cons.
and in this issue, personally, i have weighed the pros and cons.. and i say that i would rather give up homebrew than to welcome the possible risk on the PS3 (as a machine and as an entity) and, to a broader scale, the gaming community in its entirety.

They could remove the checker which checks whether the PS2-PS1 disk is legit.
I would pay for this... I have lots of pirated PS1 and PS2 games... shame on me +(

As for all the people who are afraid of pirated games: the Wii and the X360 is hacked, does that mean that nobody buys games for them anymore? Hell NO. I can clearly understand your concerns, but I'm pretty sure that piracy will never be so big like it is on the PSP.
Firstly, ISO's will be impossible, because the HDD of the PS3 is formatted in a FAT32 system, that means you can only have data up to 4GBs. Secondly, burning is stupid at the moment. If you buy the blank BD's, you can also buy the full games, 'cause the price difference isn't much.
And for Homebrew the PS3 is perfect. Tell me where you can such a powerful PC for the same price.

I would love to see FreePlay owning you xD (c'mon)

In my own opinion, it's alright to download games, but ONLY if production of them are done (1st generation of games all the way to the last generation) because they have a minimal effect on sales)

There is piracy on ALL consoles (with PC being the largest!) and that hasn't stopped anyone from producing games for any of them.

If piracy/homebrew kills systems then why aren't these dead or "had died" during their time?
GameCube
Xbox
Xbox 360
PS1
PS2
PC!!!!!!
GBA
NDS
Getting HB on the PS3 wont kill it any more then any other system died from it or piracy. The amount of actual pirates versus paying customers is so ridiculously small it's a moot point.

how shortsighted some people are... now if those huge population of people would just buy games then maybe developers and publishers won't have to charge that much just to breakeven... what did you say? "amount of actual pirates versus paying customers" way to go in saying that it's good to carry these slackers on our money paying backs... maybe games like ut3, gears, and crysis would have sold more on the PC... lord knows they deserve those sales.
no those systems are not dead because the companies behind them fought to keep it that way.. a battle that was unnecessary to begin with.
piracy does nothing good, only for those people with selfish intents is it of any worth.
way to go in promoting stealing, you have a good future in politics... they need more shortsighted shallow people like you... newsflash: the world is a lot bigger than your personal needs.

Oh yeah? Who told you that? If ISO access means no good games then why are there good games for the Xbox, 360, PS1, PS2, GBA, NDS, PC....
"ISO access" obviously DOES NOT mean no good games.

I knew even you couldn't have been dumb enough to disagree.
That's is correct, they are not dead and they all had block buster titles. Meaning piracy does not harm consoles.
As for the rest of your crap about the companies having made more money or having to do something they shouldn't...blah blah blah....that is neither here nor there. None of that had to do with the conversation taking place.
"piracy does nothing good"
Who the hell said it does? And NO I do not support piracy. Thanks for showing us all what kind of a POS you can be.

If this exploit was brought about, a soft mod could make it possible to play imported games. Piracy isn't what homebrew is. Homebrew can serve a purpose.

Even if they get code running on PS3, it's going to be AT LEAST a year before they get an ISO loader running....
However it also allows people to start porting graphical apps that can access the RSX and actually make PS3 a nice Photoshop/rendering machine.....it would also allow for video and sound editing software to be ported (if people take the time) in which PS3 would kick ass at....
Not to mention countless other applications.....

The reason piracy on PSP became so rapant is that 2+ gig memcards are cheap as hell and iso's are only 200-1000mb.....a simple download.....
Downloading a 20 gig file is alot different, not to mention you then need writeable blu-ray drive and blu-ray discs....which are still expensive as hell......and if you put 'em on your HDD you will be filling that up very quickly....

On the PS3 if im into mini-games, I get them from PSN in awesome quality. The only thing that WOULD be nice homebrew. wise would be emulators (N64, Amiga etc) You can have that on your PC, however.

In addition to that, there is no reason to play ISO games on the PS3. You would copy the entire disk "file for file" to the PS3 then play it if it became a problem.
Hell, all I want is the ability to mess around with MY OWN save files!!!! What's next? Microsoft encrypts your My Documents folder so you can never do anything with your files expect use MS Office!?!?!? This is BS!
