On top of the lengthy instructions to get the exploit working, the other downside of this is that it does not actually work for all games. Although, they claim that the exploit works just fine with Killzone 2, PES 2008 and Burnout Paradise.
You can check it out and see the Motorstorm exploit for the PS3 in action for yourself below.

BUT if as you say "stealing during the height of a console will hurt sales" Then right now PS3 games would have Been Less money by now BUT NO!!! Take a look at 360 it's been hacked from close to day 1 and Sales are the Same, They are taking people for fools charging 60$+ for a game you play for 2hours (unless has online play "that's good") sadly i have a PS3 BUT i will never Buy a New game And that is whats really hurting them.

Even if there true (which i highly doubt) its unfeasible to spend 20-30 bucks on a BDR to test if it works. This is too expensive for trial and error, not to mention that a firmware update would quickly nullify it and Sony would just ban your MAC Addy from PSN Access.
Honestly, the PS3 is a console i wouldn't want hacked. I feel that Sony has gotten it right and are offering things we actually do want with this console. The PSP was a different story and had to be built upon by hombrew Devs to make it worthwhile. I think Sony has taken that knowledge and put it to good use.

Don't worry. I don't think sales would be even scratched by this. Piracy involves a very small minority and the vast number of users are not privy or knowledgable on the subject.
I think IF the PS3 ever gets hacked (which it shouldn't as I thought 1 SPU was strictly for running security checks) I think it would have to be a HW mod and if by some miracle some made a SW hack that disabled that security SPU or fakesigned something, then it would lead to a hello world before a full demonstration or BD Backups.

tl;dr The only way its happening is hardware.

Also, I don't own a PS3 or know much about it's security features, but if it WAS (Implying this video is fake) hacked you could definitely spoof a bunch of stuff that Sony detected in order to bypass firmware checks.

but this would also allow the pirates to do what they do best unfortunately.
