PS3 hack rumor blitz: NAND Extractor updated, PS3 game backups successfully run? |
Ó

Half of the world may have stopped spinning when word spread of the apparent successful runs of PlayStation 3 backups - those ripped straight to the Sony PS3's own hard drive and an external USB HDD. And close on its heels is the news that PS3 coder Mainman has also moved in unison with the recent exploits on Sony's console and updated his PS3 NAND Extractor/UnPacker to version 0.4.
Backups of PS3 games have been successfully tested on PlayStation 3 test platforms (retail platforms), though it has been noted that only developmental copies of games may be used. This is due to the exclusivity of the EBOOT.BIN file on developmental copies which are key to the smooth execution of the copied games. The executable must be modified or recreated from the ground up to allow proper execution.
And Mainman's application now allegedly includes Beta support for the 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU's flash, and it comes with a scan mechanic to automatically search for files to extract and dump. These features, however, cannot be verified as the author withheld the release until the bugs could be formally sorted out.
There's also talk about Team InFeCtuS (makers of one of the more popular Xbox 360 modchips) who aim to update their software to add support for the revision to the Samsung Flash. It has been claimed that the new release would give more leeway in the investigation of downgrading to lower PS3 firmwares.

when everybody knows it all boils down to playing back ups... sad really.
anyway you can't blame people for trying to not make themselves look cheap.

they constantly demand for more games and better games... constantly get on the developers for not doing more... whine about the smallest of glitches or inconveniences (like game installation)... cry about features they want...
when the only productive thing that they will ever contribute (and that is buying games in retail) to the industry in which they claim to love they want to take away... they want to play back ups.
so inspite of all the demanding and crying and whining at the end it is them (the pro hacking people) who are really doing nothing to benefit each component of the industry from the console manufacturers, the developers, the publishers, the game retailers etc....
they can claim that it enables people to do more other than play back ups... but in reality everybody knows this all boils down to playing back ups no matter what excuse they come up with.

Aside from that aspect, it would be very difficult to use backups at all. First of all the PS3 uses a FAT file system so it can only have individual files of up to 4 GB. How many GOOD games do you think there are out there which are less than 4 GB? To get around this problem you would have to use removable storage and seeing how big the games are you would be filling up the removable storage pretty fast and the expenses could quickly build up. Secondly, most if not all internet service providers have a monthly bandwidth limit. So unless you have a $90/month plan you'll be exceeding that limit pretty quickly by downloading PS3 games. So say your monthly bandwidth limit is 60 GB. You download 3 to 4 games and exceed the limit. For every extra 1 GB you download over your bandwidth limit your internet service provider will charge around $5(of course this varies between internet service providers, but it's generally something around that). So lets see how this adds up. You exceed your limit and then you download 2 more 20 GB games in that month. In total that's 40 GB and what's 40 GB multiplied by $5? Hmm, $200? All these expenses when buying the games wouldn't cost much more and you would have features such as online content with upgraded firmware. So is pirating really worth it in the long run?

There are no PC games that are 20GB, and PS3 has the same games, so why would they be less compressed than the PC versions?
E.g.
Call of Duty 4 - 6.32GB
Bioshock - 6.10GB
Crysis - 6.32GB
Guitar Hero 3 - 3.35GB
Kane & Lynch - 8.10GB
NFS ProStreet - 4.90GB
Why would these SAME games be any bigger just because they are on a console?
If I had a Blu Ray reader, I would check to see, but yeah.
But yeah... go to Mininova, or any other torrent site, and search 'Games' for 'PS3'.
They're all 3-7GB.
Reply
I have call of Duty 4 at 15+
Oblivion 14+
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 11+
So not as big as 20, but high enough to be inconvenient. Don't think they couldn't just write in complexities and redundancies with relationships that are hard to get around.
Also seriously people I found the PS2 to be way a way higher percent pirated than the PSP, and the PS2 was a huge success. PSP was just a first gen console. Sony will get a better chance next time around. Sure piracy has had an impact of the PSP but of each person I have met anywhere that owns a PSP they have no idea what the word "homebrew" or "ISO" means.
All Sony has to do is keep piracy so the learning curve is steep enough for the masses to never want to learn it.

i do have something of the sort... mine is called unlimited cause no matter how much i download i won't have to pay a cent extra over my monthly plan... but the catch is once i go over 50GB for a certain month my speed will go down to dial up speed until the next month rolls on... but even so i can still use the internet and download as much as i want to without getting additional charge, my internet will just be slowed to dial up speed once i go over 50GB.

Of course, I have the Wii and 360 respectively for those, but it couldn't hurt Sony to get these features onto its own network.

Yes I think it`s fine for psp but not ps3. The psp goes hand in hand with ps3 and hacked psp`s have lead to lots of ps3 sales. So call the psp the loss leader in this situation. But please don`t jump on this because we just don`t need it. Ps3 rocks without stupid hacks and exploits.
Do any of us need this? I think not.

the ps3 has the potential to replace the xbox1 as best console for homebrew ever...
about the piracy:
people will download games regardless of the size, PC hdds are cheap and connections just keep getting faster.

Yarr we pirates be setting our sails, and where aiming for the PS3.

Hell if it was hacking that meant a new console had to be built everytime we would be well beond PS3, since the systems are hacked that quick anyway (minus the ps3 since this has took a hell of a long time.)
Seriously everyone else just get over yourselves please, every console gets hacked EVERY console, and it will always happen, the psp is far from dead because of it, most people don't even know how to download a game let alone install homebrew and install custom firmwares. Over half probably can't even convert a video to play on it. The Wii and the 360 is hacked and you don't see any significant effect on them, the PS2 was hacked and you didn't ever see that suffering in result off that. You can pay people to chip them and sell you copied games in bulk, much more than what would be available for the PS3 due to the complexity of it and the cost of the blu-ray writers and media. Not only that if theres an ISO loader you would have to download them which comes to my point on the PSP where the majority of people aint got a clue what they are doing when it comes to installing homebrew, firmwares let alone downloading games and managing to play them.
Reply
As of the bandwidth problem:
I wonder what providers you have, but at least here in Germany, it's pretty cheap. I am paying 25%u20AC/month (around 36$) and I have 16000 Kbits/sec and no bandwidth limit.
What I really hope is that this will never lead to a backup running method on a retail console, but like we can see ATM, such insolent *****s like the guys from PS3news ( BTW, these are the same people who tried to steal Dark_AleX's work!)
will always try to pirate the games without paying to the developers.
Seriously, there is no excuse for Blu-Ray backups.
why do you think they are made scratch-proof?
Exactly, so they are not having reading problems anymore. You need a hefty amount of power to break them and if that happens it's your own stupid fault.
Now if there would be Homebrew WITHOUT backup loaders, I would love to see that running on my console, but I am pretty sure this will never happen... -.-
Homebrew would be cool, but I am not risking to brick my PS3 with this process or to be banned from PSN just because of CFW.

Also it is true that developers make new consoles to beat piracy that is a fact. ps3 has a lifespan of ten years acording to sony. You want that cut in half. because I assure you it will if people start using copies and iso games. I don`t have a problem with hombrew but that is what linux on ps3 is for. So give sony some credit for giving us that. My ps3 can do most things I want without stupid exploits and hacks.
Like I said, do we really need it. It`s hard enough keeping up to firmwares on psp`s without having the same on ps3. Imagine the incompatabiliti es it would cause with difforent firmwares every month or few weeks.
I for one will not be risking my £550 ps3 for this or any other exploits. Plus Sony will ban you from sony services if you do anyhow. Think about it!

Also, I can't read your whole comment, because there are soo many weird stars...

Any moron who thinks the PSP is the way it is because you can run pirated games on it, is very ignorant.
Xbox was hacked, 360 was hacked, PC was hacked....all VERY STRONG systems.
I wish people would EDUCATE themselves and stop believing all the crap they read on the iNEt.

As for PS3News stealing anything from Dark_AleX....every news post I ready about Dark_AleX on the PS3News site, they gave him full credit for any work he's done.
I don't care about playing backups but I do care about messing around with my save files. I hope it's hacked enough so we can decompile our saves and make them usable again after playing with them.

They should have to get a court order to even attempt to start looking. But as usual my fellow Americans have voted away their rights.
Think of internet data transfer as the SAME EXACT thing as a phone call. Now they can listen in all they want. Lame.

Just because OTHER systems got hacked and they were still strong dosnt mean its all fine and dandy for the PS3 to get hacked.
How bout you EDUCATE yourself on doing the right thing instead of the cheap thing.

"People are actually doing whats right, and you think thats wrong?"
Nope, I never stated as such. This is more imaginary BS from Eclipze_.
"Just because OTHER systems got hacked and they were still strong dosnt mean its all fine and dandy for the PS3 to get hacked."
Yes it does! It proves beyond all shadow of a doubt that piracy DOES NOT harm a systems overall retail status
"How bout you EDUCATE yourself on doing the right thing instead of the cheap thing."
You'll have to explain yourself on this one. How am I doing "the cheap thing" by stating FACT about past console history? Get a clue bud!!!

So I find out how to NOT hack off the internet and people, and its crap?? Am I supposed to educate my self that hacking the system is ok, just because other systems made it like the ps2 and ps1, because the last time I checked this is a new day and age. Look at what happen to the psp, the ps3 is the same in the way that they would hack it so I dont see how it'll be any better.
"How bout you EDUCATE yourself on doing the right thing instead of the cheap thing."

Dont know how you didnt understand this, but what I'm saying is that hacking in general (not talking to you directly) isnt what the system is meant for. People who think getting free games isnt illigal are wrong, its piracy and if I was a developer I'd be pissed as hell if people wanna take the cheap way out and get my games for free. Developers work hard to make games yet people can just download them and not actually give them their well deserved money.
If people want homebrew how bout they get a damn job and make their own console, because the PS3 and all other systems that were hacked are not there's, its Sony's or who ever made the system.
Reply
OMG... thats a good one.
The PS3 seems to be a beast to hack and with a simple update bam, Sony locks it out. I wonder how many users are willing to hack at their warranty of their $400-$700 machine just to play donkey kong roms? It's all about piracy and when game companies make all of their money on games, taking losses with the hardware, then it's no question that those who download instead of buying games are hurting those companies.

What the hell are you talking about? Are you even in this conversation?
"Am I supposed to educate my self that hacking the system is ok just because other systems made it like the ps2 and ps1"
No, idiot. You're supposed to educate yourself to understand that what OTHER people do with a system WILL NOT affect your experience.
", because the last time I checked this is a new day and age."
Good for you.
"Look at what happen to the psp"
Nothing happened! The PSP in itself is NOT a successful system. HALF OF ITS INTENT FAILED. UMD FAILED. The drive is so slow, it's the #1 cause of people ditching their PSP. Piracy did NOTHING to the PSP.
"the ps3 is the same in the way that they would hack it so I dont see how it'll be any better."
The PS3 is the same, the Xbox is the same, the PS2 is the same.....IT'S ALL THE SAME. How are you not getting this? Your main argument is that the PSP is not xbox or PS1 or PS2...it's a new age....well guess what! The PS3 is NOT the PSP either. Your own main argument works AGAINST YOU. You fail all around.
"Dont know how you didnt understand this, but what I'm saying is that hacking in general (not talking to you directly) isnt what the system is meant for."
And? What the hell is your point here? Who CARES what the system was intended for. The bottom line is that what other people do with it DOES NOT AFFECT YOU.
"People who think getting free games isnt illigal are wrong, its piracy"
Again, that has NOTHING to do with this conversation.
"and if I was a developer I'd be pissed as hell if people wanna take the cheap way out and get my games for free."
Good for you! Get pissed off all you want. IT DOES NOT AFFECT YOU.
"Developers work hard to make games yet people can just download them and not actually give them their well deserved money."
This is where your ignorance shows. Do you have ANY CLUE how many people actually copy games for a SPECIFIC system instead of buying that game? That number is so ridiculously small it's moot.
"If people want homebrew how bout they get a damn job and make their own console"
Wow! You sure have all the answers don't ya! That comment here is about as worthless as it gets.
"because the PS3 and all other systems that were hacked are not there's, its Sony's or who ever made the system."
That's where you are wrong. This is NOT a leased system. It's a PURCHASED system. The only ammo Sony has is that it's a federal crime in the US to circumvent digital rights protection.
You want to know what I think is hilarious? People are going to do whatever they want to with the system. You obviously dislike that. But it's going to happen anyway regardless of how you feel about it..... that is so damn funny! HAHAHA!!!!!! Nothing you say will get you what you want. Live with that!
Reply
I'm not sure what this guy is talking about however what I got explaining above is that the US government has no right to see what you are downloading. Although Americans are slowly allowing the US government to get a hold of whatever info they want.
Reply
2. In order for you to show reasonable damage to a company you first need to establish how many pirates are actively engaging in piracy on a specific console versus paying customers.
So please, cough up the numbers for us.

I am not saying that piracy is right, or even that it doesn't harm the market, but when it comes to people knowing how to hack, there are fewer that know how than people that don't.

made better portable games like the DS instead Of ps2 ports.that's why the psp is pretty much used as an ipod, hackers actually helped the psp with emulators and applications.
Reply
Honestly, is this a joke? Because if you actually believe what you're saying that's pretty damn sad.
Reply
if you want emulation then just play them on your pc that is probably 5 feet away from your ps3. i for one am not about to risk 500+ dollars so i can play a crappy homebrew game or an emulation i can do on my psp or pc, THAT ARE ALL IN THE SAME ROOM!
Reply
It does not stop you from going on live. You have to bounce back and forth. Also, a hack on the PS3 would also cause you to be careful going online.
"the wii was hacked but the majority of its user base doesnt know hot to or want to do that."
Same thing with the PS3! And the PSP for that matter.
"the pc was hacked but as you can see that medium is almost dead."
HAHAHA!!! In your DREAMS.
"ps2 was hacked but by then nearly everyone had one and not many could go out and by plus install a flip magic."
Do you even know what you are talking about? The PS2 was hacked early on. The first chip was 8 wires then 6. Then a no solder mod. You could BUY PS2's prehacked for a good price.
"if you want emulation then just play them on your pc that is probably 5 feet away from your ps3."
Probably not.
"i for one am not about to risk 500+ dollars so i can play a crappy homebrew game or an emulation i can do on my psp or pc"
Good for you.

Once you OWN a console...it's YOUR PROPERTY. You can do whatever you damn well please with it. Should I choose to piss on it, it's MINE! WHO CARES?!? Downloading bootlegs to me is a form of free "try before you buy". Is it legal...not in most places, but I support GOOD GAMES. *****ty ports of games which devs have NO RIGHT CHARGING 50-60 bux for is a rip-off. They, in my opinion, deserve to be bootlegged to teach them a lesson in ripping off the consumers they rely on to make money. Keep in mind...this is MY OPINION - And many disagree with it - I can respect that...but I also hold myself to a personal promise to purchase games I like (for example the whole GTA series). I've downloaded Liberty City, liked it, and bought it (for the PSP!!)
With that said - Hacking a console is NOT soley for running backups/bootlegs. Does anyone have an original XBOX running XBOX MEDIA CENTER? If you do...then YOU know what I am talking about. My XBOX is STILL being used BECAUSE of that! (Yes the PS3 has network capabilities, but they SUCK compared to how great XBMC is...you can stream over the network pretty much ANY format...even stuff that's still RAR'd into 50+ files!) Once you unlock the potential of a console...especially one that is SOO POWERFUL LIKE THE PS3...it gives you the option to do what ever you want with it!
People that sit there and ASSUME that it ONLY LEADS TO PIRACY are probably the same type of IDIOTS that say Guns are bad because they kill people (for example). The reality is - ANYTHING can be used for wrong or illegal purposes if it's in the hands of a person who is intending to do something illegal with it.
To limit the PS3 to only work the way Sony envisioned...well that's fine and all if YOU want to...but I've seen the potential that GOOD homebrew has, and the AWESOME stuff they can produce. It's free and it makes my $500 console even MORE useful. If you choose not to do it - good for you! I , for one, am always hacking away at my electronics to get the most bang for the buck (I mean...my PSP plays DOS games AND it's a universal remote)
I'm just wondering - How many of you "Anti-PS3 Hackers" have installed Linux on your PS3? If you're sitting there wondering "Why the hell would I want to do that anyway?!" - then you're thinking with the wrong mentality. Keep buying games at the store and playing them on your PS3 - Don't worry about the PS3 hacking scene and you'll be happier that way.
Reply
And what do you mean hacked? We've been able to run our own code on the PC all the time, it doesn't need any hacks to do it!
Why don't you try linux on your PS3 and see for yourself why we need homebrew.
No, you don't need a hack for linux.
