For the past few weeks PS3 has been suffering from one bad press after another. While we report them as they come, we do feel sympathy for PS3 fans out there. I felt exactly the same way when movie critics had nothing but thumbs down for the preview reviews of Gigli and Swept Away - two films I bet with my friends could break Titanic's box office record. The movies flopped and I had to shave our eyebrows as punishment for my misplaced loyalty.

But never mind that! This is one PS3 news that isn't a downer.

Square Enix revealed the company has plans to implement the PS3's motion-sensing capabilities in its next generation games. In an interview with Electronic Game Monthly, SE's game and character designer Tetsuya Nomura said they already have some ideas about how they would be using Sony's Dual Shock PS3 controller's functionality for both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

FFXIII originally planned to be released on PS2 but the company decided to bring it to PS3 along with FF Versus XIII as their first next generation Final Fantasy titles. According to SE game producer Yoshinori Kitase, they were "thinking about making FFXIII on PS2 and FFVersusXIII on a next-gen platform... altered that plan and decided to make both titles on PlayStation 3." But it doesn't mean the two games will overlap in terms of content. True, they have a common source of inspiration but SE says each world is completely separate and different. Characters within each world won't meet each other for now although a crossover is a future possibility.

That's one of the great things bout the FF franchise. Gamers are not required to play all the game titles to understand each game's secrets. Kitase described the characters in each game as having their own distinct lives, even though there is this a common mythology that links the games together. The binding mythology is an element that is found in all facets of FFXIII, Versus XIII, and Agito XIII. SE says new projects could still arise all spawned by tale of the new mythology.

PS3The SE team also shared a glimpse of what FFXIII and FF Versus XIII will be like on PS3. FFXIII on PS3 will continue the traditions of the Final Fantasy series, meaning the active-time battle command system from the other titles. The major difference is that the battles would be faster resulting in reduced waiting time that afflicted previous versions.

On the other hand, FF Versus XIII will go far beyond the traditions. FF Versus XIII will not bea hybrid of Advent Children and KH2. It's not a step up the KH battle system evolutionary ladder but "something new and different."

The only bad news here is FFXIII's release date, which is some time in 2007, while FF Versus XIII be available in 2008. Still, we wouldn't mind waiting for such an ambitious project built for the PS3. The meeting of the two presents immense possibilities. And that could only mean more good news.

Feel sorry for...?

Comparing PS3 to flopped movies? I don't see what there is to "feel" for PS3 fans. That they'll get the most powerful game console with the biggest gaming library?

"people can ***** about price, proccessing power, different models, inovation and all that crap... ... but when it comes right down to it, video games are about the games. and sony always has the most variety. so they instantly winz" I've actually seen more variety on the 360... so far...only have seen a flying game, a sports game, rpgs, and a fps for the ps3... for the 360...all of those plus more. The Xbox had bad variety of the 360...has a pretty good rounded bit of variety. I really do hope there will be more variety for the ps3...i'm disapointed right now

"Poor Variaty? Action,Card games, Sports, Rpgs, Fps , Flying games, Sims, Stradagy. You sure your reading it right?" I think he cant understand his own words. Because thats a cool variety of categories.

As i see it: wait a year or two and then youll see that the PS3 has more variety than 360, although the Wii COULD have the most new concepts. Those who buy the 360, bought it for the fps games, halo, gears of war etc etc. Off course there will be other genres on 360, but theyll be in a fewwer amount. BTW, anyone who is cursing Sony for the drop of rumble feature should consider this: have you ever experienced the rumble as a real feature that enhances gameplay??? NO, being able to shake off opponents with gyro is much more fun than feeling the rumble when you get hit.

ditched

The reason I ditched my PS2 was because of the lack of games that appeal to me, the xbox feels much more like a console made for me where as the playstation seemed to be made for japan. Maybe PS3 will change this with more western style games and less eastern rpg's. But I would say so far that the 360 would have the most variety looking at the games we will be getting such as resident evil and now final fantasy.

How did the xbox appeal more to you then your PS2? What do you mean you will be getting the most varieites on the 360? Lets see, Resident Evil souldn't count because its a shooter and you got Rpg's on the orignal Xbox. I don't see a lot of varieties there. Read #6 and tell me which system has varieties? Seeing how the PS2 won because of its varieties, don't you think the same is going to happen to the PS3? The only thing that confuses me is how can you find a system that has mostly shooters appeal to you, while another system (PS2) has that genra and more? Isn't better to invest money on the sytem that would be more worth your money?

cool

Well im gonna post a nice comment, instead of critising it because its not gonna actually change peoples minds and its pointless and stupid :S Yeah the motion sensing seems a great idea, and im glad they will be using it. I cant wait to get my hands on this game aswell as the playstation 3.

I dont see what you mean by 360 getting Final Fantasy, all it has is FFXI and that has been on PS2 for years and they upscaled it a bit for 360. I think PS2 lacked FPS games last time around but PS3 seems to have a good number of them already.

someone forget...

someone forget about the timesplitter series, black, medal of honor, cod, area 51, half life, darkwatch, red faction, unreal, swat, quake 3 rev, sof, cold winter, turok, project snowblind(i know most r not exclusives, none the less they were offered well on the ps2)

Same News ?

Why the same news refreshed over and over again, its already a fact that FFXIII is gonna rock, but today I've clicked on this topic on over 3 sites and on all of them its a past news made today. Strange ! On the other hand, with all the price issues flying about, I am beginning to understand that in the time of today when PC's prices are going sky high, over 2000$ that is, a 299$ console cannot be next-gen, that's it. It just doesn't feel right to know that MS delivered their X2 for just 299$? a system that is to go for the next 5 years, and is bringing no profit to the company ? and will definitely see price cuts in 2-3 years too ? More Strange !!! Besides, now a 499$ PS3 is starting to make sense, no doubt in the world of today, pricing are certainly going to be high, and Sony's strategy does seem more reliable that they are gonna last over 5 years, even with price cits and stuff, just like the PS2 is doing.

Yeah

Completely agree with #9, I have like seven PS2 games (three of them being GTA titles). I already have eight 360 titles, and I have preordered another six. I guess the main reason for me is that I hate the Dual Shock unless it's on a game where you don't need precision aiming (like GTA), but I play mainly FPS games (and love them) where precison aiming is a must, and when it comes to precision aiming and control over the joysticks, Xbox controller > Dual Shock, fact. I really don't give two sh*ts about Jap RPGs, any racing game besides Burnout, fighting games, sim games, or flying games, which is all the PS3 really has going for it, so it just doesn't appeal to me, and especially not at $600.

@ #10

resident evil is survival horror not a shooter apart from maybe res 4 a bit.
by - 2006-06-12 05:19:17
hmm...

I suggest to you, "your father" that you try out more games?:D it sounds like you only played the games your friends play, and your friends only play halo or something.

Very funny

First he complains about the existence of eastern RPGs on the PS2 (which make about... maybe 2 percent of its catalogue?), then he brags about having Final Fantasy on the X360 (which isn't even half true)! :D Anyway, it is always a good advice to buy the console which features the most and best games of your personal taste.

controller

now i know you don't really think the xbox or xbox360 controller is better than a ps2. leave the meth alone man. xbox even moved the black and white buttons and made the other four a square just like the ps2. if it was better they would not have to copy the ps2 controller. why do you think they sell an adapter so you can use ps2 joysticks on the xbox and gcube, but not the other way around do the math
by - 2006-06-13 00:23:01
^

Wow, dumbest post I've seen in a long time, and this site is filled with almost 100% dumb posts. Firstly, it is not MS who makes those adapters, they are made by third partys like Nyko and MadCatz Second, they do have adapters to use your Xbox controller on your PS2. Do some research before telling people to "do the math". A simple Google search and the first result I got had exactly that product. I guess it's more personal taste, but IMO the Xbox S controller and Xbox 360 controller are vastly superior to the Dual Shock 2 in every way. Having both joysticks directly adjacent to each other feels strange and un-natural to me. The Xbox layout for the sticks is much more comfortable and easier to control. The Xbox sticks are also much tighter and have a better feel and response when moving them. The back and start buttons are also much better on Xbox controllers because they are made of hard plastic and not flimsy rubber.

@21 Which controller you like also depends on what type of games you play.
by - 2006-06-15 18:46:37
