PS3 in 3D? - Image 1

Okay, this could be big. According to stereoscopic 3D certification and advocacy group Meant to be Seen, Blitz Games Studios has confirmed that Sony "fully intends" to support stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D on the PS3 in 2009 with the help of Blitz's Blitz Tech engine.

So far, Sony hasn't sent out any official statements about this, but it certainly looks very promising.

According to the MTBS post, "console support will only need a bios upgrade to work, and we are told that the ability to add this capability via bios may be unique to Sony PS3 versus the other console solutions."

3D gaming on the PS3? Bring it on! The only thing that kind of puts me off is the fact that the only games I know Blitz for are those Bratz titles, so I can't help but imagine a 3D Bratz doll reaching out to me from the TV. It's creepy. Impressive, but creepy.

3d will be very cool for the ps3,

um i think the supplier of bratz lost the lawsuit against mattel, so there wont be any bratz dolls next year, or ever, thank god

I've been following this tech for several years now (since I saw Muppet 4d, awsome...) This would be amazing. They have tv sets that you don't even need 3d glasses to get a 3d picture. I'm sure a lot of people would want to put money in the pot to see a major consel support and help sell their tech.

» awesome but

Last time a 3d movie at home it was thta spy kids movie and coming from my normal tv even with the glasses wasnt tht great.it kinda hurt my eyes and didnt work right.I hope this comes out ok and yeah ive seen the tv's where you dont even need glasses. They're the DLP projection ones that are capable of it.

So i hope they take the time to develop this right so everyone can see it properly because i love my ps3 and am so glad i dished out the 400 for it.and 4d movies are a whole nother story.completely different then what theyre talking about.

» Hmmm

I think that the VR headtracking would be more sensible...especially with a projected screen that takes up your whole field of vision...

if you havn't see it, just search "wii headtracking" without the quotation on youtube...

» VR Display + WIN

@Shatterdome: VR is freaking AMAZING.

But...There's some downsides, the biggest one I can think of is room limitation.

Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft only want to do something that affects their majority of customers, therefor making the most money.

But not everybody has the room to run around their room using VR so, I think there's discretion on that.

I think it's coming soon, but I think the gaming companies are going to improve upon the idea more.

To be honest though, this headtracking is rather useless,

It is fun that the camera in game turns when you turn your head and all but, you turn your head away from the TV, which makes it quite useless.

You cant turn away your head and look at the TV at the same time and still be comfortable whilest playing, just think about it for a while ;)

» We need this

This will be good if it supports dlp 3d screens lcd shutter lasses and also anaglyph glasses. It needs to support all these formats so everyone can experience it. Some people would like vr glasses and others would like anaglyph. This way everyone gets to experience regardless of how much extra equipment may cost. After all cheap paper 3d glasses can be picked up free. For people that like Vr Glasses thats fine if you can afford $500 to buy them. But atleast everyone gets a chance to use it.

» Worldrunner 3D

Does nobody remember Worldrunner 3D for the NES.... That game used layered images on the screen (blue and red overlapping) and those wicked cool paper shades and that was an amazing effect.

More games like that would be brilliant.

Would be kool, but wouldn't this hurt the eyes some? It can't be worse than the Virtual Boy though.

by Shatterdome - 2008-12-19 22:30
» however...

The headtracking provides a 3d effect to the user and a recognizable image to other viewers....

Stereoscopic 3D requires special glasses, and a special type of image on the screen....the image looks garbled to anyone other than the user. Also, if you looked away with stereoscopic 3D, you wouldn't be able to see what you wanted to look at due to the glasses....if you look away with the headtracking technolog, at least you see clearly.....and you can always hit start.

Also, it's not goimg to be true 3D unless your image moves with your vision......otherwise it's still mock 3D....

by Shatterdome - 2008-12-19 22:34
» exactlly.

That's why headtracking 3D is the way to go...no crazy images that mess with your eyes...just natural ones, that reacte naturally...

» In theory

In theory, I would think that a 120hz LCD display might be capable of "no glasses 3D". I remember having LCD glasses for the PC years back, and they required that I had a video card capable of 120hz refresh rate. So, in my 'junk theory' (substantiated upon nothing but my 'guessing'), I would think many of the newer high-end LCD panels already on the market would be capable of some 'trickery' where on one 60hz cycle you get a 'right eye picture', and on the other 60hz cycle you get a 'left eye picture'.

» exciting

very, but one slight drawback, what if you only have one pair of these glasses head thingys, and you wanna play multiplayer? it wont ruin the game experience for the player w/o will it??
