PS3In an interview with the three top Sony executives for the PlayStation brand, it was discovered that the PlayStation 3 will be region-free with regards to gaming! Both Ken Kutaragi and Phil Harrison seem to confirm this which is good, Harrison also fulfilled his promise about region-free gaming. After all, Nintendo's region-locking details still aren't clear after all the contradictions that have been going on.

You said at GDC this year that PS3 would be region-free. Still true?

Harrison: Yes, for games but not movies.

The PS3 will be region-free. Will this be for packaged games only or also downloadable games?

Kutaragi: There are no physical barriers in that case -- only language barriers.

However, there is some bad news. According to Kaz and Ken, there will be no component cables in the box. That's right, the PS3 might not be HD ready out of the box. Not the best way of bringing in the HD-era. Interestingly enough, this is another point which Nintendo has been giving conflicting information on in regards to the Wii.

Hirai said he wasn't sure, but he thought the answer was likely "no". Kutaragi wouldn't commit to an answer, but was heavily leaning towards "no". Kutaragi was being hounded by PR staff that wouldn't let him answer certain questions, so that might be  the reason why. After all, Kutaragi's statements have caused many uproars in the past! Hopefully we'll get concrete information on both soon.

no component cables? No problem. I imagine that most of the people that have a HDTV and are planning to buy a PS3 already have component cables for their PS2. And those that don't have an HDTV, well, it doesn't make a difference if they get component cables or not. Once they do get an HDTV though, i'm sure the 34$ for component cables will seem like nothing next to the 800$+ price of a HDTV.

Its not a problem. So far I have a regular TV and my DVD player is using it already. When I get an HDTV next year im gonna get an HDMI.... Not need for component.

wow at least its now confirmed that ps3's region free. that whole renting games thing is out of the way, i would like a ps3 and a wii. no 360 though. but still no component cables is a RIP OFF. i mean your paying 500-600 bucks for the system alone, it better include component cables. and for the peeps without hdtvs, they can forget even buying the ps3 because its useless then. but 600 bucks is still an anus load. im still buyin it anyway though.

If you search "cheap HDMI cables" on the net you'll find a couple of sites that sell HDMI and other important component cables for like 10 bucks each. You can check all the customer and other site reviews and they say these cables are just as good as Monster Cables. Monster Cables and other high brands mark up their stuff alot just to make ridculous profit.

In other words, picking up cables shouldn't cost anymore than 10-20 bucks.

Do you expect anye console to have Component cables?

Xbox360 didnt have Component cables. It doesnt have the VGA cable. They are cables you have to buy.

The PS2 component cables will work on the PS3. Just like how the PS1 cable worked on the PS2, its the same interface.

HDMI cables are cheap. So cheap that a 25" cable cost 35 bucks. 25 FEET.

I have one, it works perfectly for 1080p@60 and it runs 25" from my ceiling projector to my Upscaling DVD player until I get a PS3.

My Xbox360 is connected through component and ill say this, HDMI has many advantages, Its 1 cable instead of 3 (4-5 if you use the audio).

Cables are cheap. All Sony needs to do is provide their own cables to sell because theres no point in packaging a AV, COmponent, and a HDMI cables when people arent going to use all 3.

I've never found any info about the region status of the old PS1/PS2 games. Will the PS3 ignore those regions?

That is the question I've been asking for a year now. I have a Japanese PS3 and a American one. It would be nice to have 1 system for all those regional games.

And I don't care if you have the cables already not everyone else does. First sony won't put in hdmi cable and now component. They are trying to cater to the higher ups with their HD ready system but they aren't supporting it in the box. So there is alot of accesories (add-ons) that sony is about to show you. You keeps saying 360 is big on add-ons... I think you might of forgot about the ps1 and ps2 being kings of add-ons

For all you with HDMI output for your HDTV, go to monoprice.com, they sell them for a pretty good price. I brought mine, it works really good.
