PS3 gamer's browser experiments and results |
Ó
We don't know if you'll ever meet a guy who is claiming that the Playstation 3 browser is somewhere between that of a mobile device and a regular desktop. Well, we did - not in person, but through his online site Design215. He's Robert Giordano. His claims, if we may add, were not caused by moments of loneliness and hundreds of PS3 units stolen. Giordano has a little experiment to back them up.First, he stated that the console uses a version of the NetFront Browser as its web browser - the very same software mainly used on mobile devices like phones and pocket PCs. He then began with a document object model. According to Giordano, he created a test page that "displays the user-agent and HTTP-accept headers sent to the server, and if JavaScript is available, loops through the list of supported mime types and plugins."
The result? The PS3 apparently does not send an HTTP-accept header to the server. It supports Javascript but he will not divulge which version. Despite that, the console reports no mime types, no plugins, and no Javascript errors. He then proceeded with a couple more of tests that concern DHTML layers, AJAX Support, as well as Flash Support.
Some worked fine, but others didn't. It was quite funny that Giordano was delighted to know YouTube works. The details of the experiment can be viewed via the Read link below. But because we love you, here's a summary of Giordano's work:
- Framesets and iframes are not supported. The browser will attempt to open some framesets in separate windows but the results are less than desirable. This is bad news for people who use hidden iframes for their Web 2.0 apps.
- CSS2 seems well supported and Standards compliant pages look good, especially if they are XHTML 1.0.
- Javascript is somewhat supported but there doesn't seem to be any AJAX support.
- Certain events are missing (as they would be on mobile devices) like "onkeydown" and so on.
- Using "for(x in y)" to loop through the properties of a Javascript object doesn't work but you can test for the existence of individual properties.
- Dynamically loading external Javascript files after the page has loaded doesn't seem to work. More bad news for Web 2.0 apps.
- When using the on-screen keypad, the browser will add a space after each word. It does this on password fields as well, which can cause a bit of frustration if you don't remove the extra space at the end before you try to log in. I discovered this trying to log in to Gmail.

Why the ***** bothering if you can use linux to do that....:P
But Sony should really put firefox for it's default browser instead of a cheap browser! IT'S A MUST
man, if sony do that, everyone will be happy
meanwhile, just boot fedora and have fun, lol. not more complex, and pretty usefull for faqs, lol
PS3 SUCKS
So does your mom, now gtfo of the ps3 section. Honestly, I don't know why people comment / look in sections they don't like. I never visit the 360 or wii sections, cause they don't interest me. i wish people like you would do the same for the ps3.
because he likes the PS3. That is the only reason he is here. He likes the ps3, but hes a little child that can't afford one.
AJAX does work...I tested it myself one of the first days after I got the PS3.
I just tested myself. (Go into the PS3 Browser and go to Google and search for 'Browser Info' and it's the first result.) This guy may be full of it.
Is interesting to know that the wii will have a browser too on 23 of this month and it will be an opera one...
Sony fans rarely..[if Ever].go to other systems section..but it seems xbox fans always post in PS3 forums..i believe that comes from an inferiority complex that resides within every xbox owner..they that PS3 is attractive..[i wont say that its the best]....they want final fantasy..they want MGS4..they want original games like shadow of the collosus...but they cant have...simply becus there system[xbox360]..simply lacks orginality..they want a ps3...but they hate to be proved wrong...[nothing is worse in this world than proving someone wrong]....and so theyr in pain.
i hope i could hlp you but...well....never mind
why post such nuisance?
if you like xbox360, go with your own fluck!
if you like ps3, then stick these users!
if you like wii, there is a separate thread for you!
if you like both or all, then cooperate with all!
NEWS-
Japan, of course PS3 are out of stock, Wii (even though it has more stock) are also nowhere to be found on stores. xbox 360 are now having lower prices, hd-dvd are sleeping on displays. looks like wii is the most sought of of most japanese kids. ps3 is just too pricey for them and regular tv dont justify the ps3 price too.
AJAX didn't work in any of my tests. I've been working on some new test pages and I'll include screenshots once I run them. Also, if you read my article, you'd see that the AJAX version of GMAIL didn't work- it reverted to a plain HTML version.
