Facebook on PS3 - Image 1Now that the PS3 has turned three years old, Sony has something big to celebrate with. Heads up, Sony has now confirmed that FW 3.10 will be going live today, after being announced only two days ago. Now that's fast. By tomorrow, your Facebook news feed will be jam-packed with download news and Trophy-whoring.

The confirmation comes by way of an official press release from Sony, indicating that SCEA will indeed be releasing the update today.

Starting on November 18, as part of the system software update, version 3.10, users can easily showcase their game accomplishments to friends and family, and post information about the PS3 games they purchase from PlayStation®Network to Facebook. With the new Facebook integration, PS3 system owners now have access to a truly social and seamless user experience.

Well, there you have it. No new features mentioned, apart from the ones Eric Lempel demoed last Monday. Keep checking back with your XMB, then let's have a look at those PS3 Facebook updates.

  • The user is now able to change the color of their [Profile].

Since it's PS3's Bday, dont u guys think they should just implement something more than just facebook on the firmware update? Maybe its possible that sony is just not telling anyone yet but there is something else everybody wants in the update..

You do know the PS3's Bday was yesterday right and I agree with you about implementing something better, but I don't think Sony would hide any updates that the firmware should come with.

The big old PS3's birthday present could be ushered into the new firmware in secret :D My PS3 is well excited :P

I wonder if the PS3's version of FaceBook is ageist like the 360s? Can anyone with a sub account tell me if they can access it? I don't have a sub account, nor do I use Facebook (MySpace was first, I hate Facebook) so I have no way of knowing.

I consider myself lucky to have gone through 3.00 AND 3.01 without a hitch. I may have over exaggerated by saying the majority (I should have said recently) but no harm playing safe, right?

# update problemsSnaku 2009-11-18 10:56
I know Sony denies that fw 3.0 and 3.01 screw up the systems, particularly the ability to read discs, but it does seem that a lot of people started having problems shortly after those fw's, myself included. The thing that really raises my eyebrow, though, was one guy who, after updating his fw, couldn't get his ps3 to recognize any discs (bd, dvd, or cd) but when he booted into linux the disc drive worked and read discs fine. I don't have linux on mine, and you need to disc drive to be working to install it, so I can't corroborate. There was also another guy who got a replacement disc drive and installed it and it still wouldn't work (though he might've gotten a defective replacement, installed it wrong, or it might've been a defect in whatever tells the disc drive to spin rather than the drive itself).

Anyway, I'm hoping it's just some driver (or whatever the equivalent is for ps3) that got corrupted and the new update will straighten it out. Otherwise I'll have to send it in for repair.

# 3.01 Probably Was My ProblemBiggBoss 2009-11-18 12:02
I avoided the 3.01 update like the plague because of the reports. But on Tuesday morning when I got home with my copy of Modern Warfare 2, I was forced to update to 3.01. Everything was fine until Saturday night. Game froze while playing MW2 offline, and when I restarted, the PS3 couldn't read any discs.

Coincidence, maybe, but I'm not so sure anymore. BTW, it was an older system. 20GB system that I bought Dec. 1st, 2006.

I didn't update either 'cuz of the rumors and 'cuz it didn't bring any significant features, but then Tekken 6 made me update. It actually worked fine for a few days: I think the system might've frozen a few times but then, in the middle of watching a movie, it froze up again and wouldn't read any discs afterward. Like, it doesn't even spin the disc: when I eject it, it's facing the exact same direction it was when I inserted it.

# Alot of anti Sony in this threadkupomogli 2009-11-18 17:50
Me and three other people I know in person have 3.01 firmware.

I didn't play Uncharted with the 3.00 firmware so that didn't hurt me, as well as all other games worked fine. None of my friends that own a PS3 are having a problem with 3.01.

It's fine if you jump onto PS3 threads and bash because the 360 is getting stuff like Episodes from Liberty City and the PS3 isn't, or vice versa with recent releases on Sony platforms like Demon's Souls, but bashing a system for a problem that doesn't exist other than the 3.00 Bluray problem which has been fixed is just a ***** move.

# Um....?Snaku 2009-11-18 18:16
The problem doesn't exist? Do a google search for "ps3 won't read disc." It's pretty common, especially among the launch units. (Pretty common may be less than 5% or whatever, but there's a decent amount that have the problem).

I wouldn't really call anything I've said "anti-sony." I just said that I suspected the firmware, since my problem and many other people's problems happened right after updating to 3.0 or 3.01.

Anyway, updating the firmware didn't fix my problem so I guess I'm out $150 to get it repaired. I'm a little annoyed that my $600 system only lasted just over 2 1/2 years but I've had really good luck with these things before so I guess it was my turn to have something break.

All of my updates have went through without a hitch. The only reason I never went to 3.01 was because of all the problems that people were experiencing.

I was forced to do so when I started MW2. Updated Tuesday. By Saturday, I had the disc read error issue. I don't know what I could have been impatient about.

Those of you in the UK with a refurbished EU PS3 may now find the iPlayer icon on the XMB.

I am an update geek. On anything, always, if there is an update, I update. I don't know why - it must be a defect in my brain.

I never made the link, but my PS3 stopped reading discs some weeks ago. I thought I had just overused the BD.

Now I am all exited - maybe updating the FW will fix it? (I did not ship for repair yet, it's not under warranty anymore)...

Well, maybe my PS3 just suffered an upgrade quirk!

I shall see later today!

You can get Linux to boot without using the disc drive. You can load the "Other OS" file from a USB drive. Try it out, I'm curious now!

For facebook you need to go to Account Management and then you will find the facebook icon. It works, I went and grabbed a demo just to see if it posted (it did instantly) Also you can now click on your self in the friends list and change the color of your PSN card. All of your friends and anyone else will see this color now instead of the default grey. The photo change isn't too bad since I have on average 200 photos per folder. Other then that, I didn't see too many changes. I went poking around in all the menus and there may have been a small change here or there but nothing too exciting. I don't remember if it was there before but you can now output audio to more then one source. IE have HDMI hooked up to your TV and also the Digital Audio to your surround sound and it goes to both.

I've got a few days before my "coffin" gets here from Sony, so I'll try that: gotta' back up everything on my system and wipe it all anyway, so might as well try it. Do you happen to have a link to a good place to get a linux build? If not, that's fine; I can probably find it easily enough if I look.

instructions here: http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html

download otheros from here: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-petitboot/otheros.bld

You should be able to drop to a shell from the Other OS and test the drive or you could burn a Linux cd and see if it lets you install.

download linux here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/ports/releases/9.10/release/xubuntu-9.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso

So far everything is good. With the previous firmware it was almost impossible to play Bioshock (only after the gardens, the game becomes stable). I have had my ps3 since it's launch day (60 GB), and I don't want a firmware to make my ps3 unusable (many people bd drives stopped working with 3.01).

I'm in the process of backing up everything from my hdd. It's taking a long time (don't have an external hdd that the ps3 will read so I'm moving things over 16 gig at a time on a memory card). I probably won't finish tonight, but I should be done some time tomorrow evening so I'll report back on my findings.

# Didn't workSnaku 2009-11-20 04:51
I had a little extra time before work this morning so I tried it out. Got the boot loader to load and once I got the tiny tiny text that I couldn't read on the screen, I popped in a disc to see if it would spin. It didn't. So much for that theory.

I did s'more research and it turns out people have been having their launch ps3's quit reading discs for a while now and every time it happens, there's some who blame it on the latest firmware because of the timing. Of course, with the number of firmwares that have come out since launch, there's a very good chance that anything that goes wrong will do so within a week or two of the latest firmware, so I guess it makes sense that people would blame the firmware. Other than the timing (3-4 days after updating to 3.01) I can't find any real connection to firmware, so I think I'll conclude that it most likely is a hardware problem.
