PS3 - Image 1Yesterday, we reported on another rumor about cross-game chat being included in the coming FW 3.10 update from Sony. Well guess what, we have another rumor for you -- FW 3.10 is "Coming Soon".

This time, the insider source comes from TheSixthAxis, and they're claiming that not only is this true, but that the next firmware update will be coming out "either in October or November". Not too far away, really.

So again, let's recap. Rumor says: a) XMB-based cross-game voice chat will be available in FW 3.10, and b) FW 3.10 is coming within the next couple of months.

Stay tuned for more updates on this.

» Dang it!

Ugh, that really sucks. Now I have to wait a month+. I've been waiting for this for the longest of times.

Man, I must be the most impatient person ever.

Can anyone explain cross-game chat ?

by Lazyboy256 - 2009-09-26 03:58
» .

It's voice chatting with other people without having to be playing in the same game. The 360 has this feature so if you got a buddy with one, ask him if he can show you.

Ihope they put back in the Playstation 'pling' when you start a game...

» Lmao

I thought of the funniest thing. What if Sony puts a firmware that really does gives us chat in-game but! Still uses the chat room and in order to start playing again we would have to quit the chat..

» And...

It's very useful when it comes to talking through load screens, not having to be in a game lobby to chat, and be able to talk when you're not supposed to because your character in game is dead.

» Agreed

Yeah, once I installed 3.00 I noticed something was missing. After a couple game boots I noticed that it was the 'ping' noise. I wonder why Sony removed it?

by danielakadanny - 2009-09-26 19:51
» the dumb thing though...

is that on the home page that they have for the PS3 web browser still has the "ping" with the PLAYSTATION 3 logo on it

There have been updates to Playstation Home.

The developers behind PS Home said the Term open beta is something they like as it allows the community of PS users to shape it. The name beta will be staying for a long time. And I have to agree that open beta term for home is a brilliant idea.

» The sad thing is

I doubt this feature is going to be used much. Think about it, Sony claims to have percentages about PS3 users using the old BC emotion chip hardware and software based consoles, and it's less than 20%. Which is why they're not fussed over putting it back, but putting PS2 titles on the store would increase money for them which is a brilliant move. It's the same as MS putting some of their 360 greatest hits on the marketplace.

I have a feeling this is going to be another one of those features that's so widely asked to have yet after it's up they won't use it and complain about something else.

I'll admit right now, I have the original 60GB PS3 97% BC and yet never touched a single old game at all. PS2 games are just so interesting and new right now where I prefer them over Old titles. Never understood this hoopla over BC, cool for those who actually uses it.

I also don't really mind the lack of XGC. If they're playing the same game as me and in an online match it makes to have communication but talking to someone else online let's say playing killzone 2 and you're playing ninja gaiden sigma and here "BOOM! HEADSHOT" it's like, wtf are they playing. dunno, it's more of a distraction to me than anything good.

» whoops

I mean "PS3 games are just so interesting and new"

-_-

» I have a 60GB version...

and I still play PS2 games in it sometimes. The PS2 library is so huge and there are many PS2 games out there that I want to play. I still look for reasonably priced PS2 games from time to time. There are also quite a few that are awesome that I didn't know existed and I pick up when I have the chance.

For me, cross-game chat is for me to socialize with actual friends, not to simply be like "hey sup" "nm u" "chillin" "O WTF HOW I DIE" "lol wat u playin dawg"

Just like when me and my friends play games, we talk about everything *but* the game we're actually playing, and usually just mute everyone else anyway.

As for PS2 BC, I had more fun with my PS2 from Jan. 2002 to Jan. 2008 than I did with my PS3 from Jan. 2008 to now. Most games released this generation, for all current gen consoles (PS3, 360, Wii) are just jokes.

Wii games aren't cool anymore since the gimmick has died out. Wow, so they can take an already over-done, mundane FPS, platformer, or sports game, and add motion controls to it. BIG DEAL. Same with how I got bored of my Nintendo DS within a friggin' month. I bought one in December of 2004, got tired of it two months later. Never really played it again, and I still have it in mint condition. Nothing more than cheap gimmicks.

PS3 and 360 games/developers are uninspired and for people to be interested in most of this crap, is beyond me, but all the power to everyone who finds something good to play. Most games are just visually impressive and not stunning gameplay-wise. Why make a game like GTA4 where the whole game looks like it's been ran through a used-coffee filter? All you see this generation is an over-use of bloom and HDR effects, and nothing but browns, blacks, reds (blood), gray, and some more brown.

The only reason PS2 lost the BC was because they were planning to pull this cheap trick in the long run: Remove PS2 BC, wait for more people to buy PS3s wondering where the BC is, then just make people re-buy all their favorite games from the store in order to be able to play them. The only reason PS1 BC was never removed wasn't because the PS1 hardware chip was easy to implement, but because PS1 games were already on the store to begin with.

I know there are a lot of HD-fanboys out there who will play anything just because it looks good on their televisions, or people who just overall are afraid to go back to PS1 or PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/etc. because all those games were too awesome for them, but it's okay. People have their preferences. Some were just unlucky to have this generation as their first.

by sickofitall - 2009-09-27 01:57
» you my friend,

must have been playing the wrong games. This generation of games is not just about amazing HD graphics, but better and smarter AI, and more things happening on screen at once.

Games like Uncharted, GT5, and Killzone 2 are all amazing games.

I think what CloudX is trying to say is, "What if we needed to have the xmb menu open for the cross-game chat to work". Like, as soon as you closed the xmb and resumed the game, the chat would end.

That would definitely be very disappointing and frustrating.
