PS3 FW 3.01 update causing problems with Blu-ray drives?

FW 3.01 - Image 1

With the release of the FW 3.01 update, many thought that their issues with 3.00, particularly the one with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, will be resolved. But out of the frying pan and into the fire, comments at the PlayStation Blog indicate that 3.01 causes more problems than it solves. After updating, many users seem to have experienced problems with their Blu-ray drives. Bummer.

According to user agentxray, who tested the new firmware update, the PS3 no longer recognize Blu-ray as a valid format:

I downloaded and installed the 3.01 firmware patch with no issues. Rebooted the PS3. I loaded Beatles Rockband and played for about ten minutes before it froze up again. After rebooting, I could not get the game to start. Further testing reveals that:

1) DVD movies play back OK

2) PS2 games (on DVD) play fine.

3) Downloaded content seems to work OK

4) PS3 does not recognize bluRay discs as a valid format.

I tried to load both ps3 games on bluRay as well as two seperate bluRay videos I have. None of these discs is recognized by the PS3.

Many other users report problems, particularly ones revolving around their PS3 Blu-ray drive. Frozen screens, blank screens, no sound. These problems seem to be commonplace with some users. Sony has yet to address the crowd, but they better do it quick before it turns into an angry mob.

For those of you guys who've upgraded, how's your PS3 doing?

Thanks to linked2thepast06 for the tip-off!

My PS3 is working fine and if you go back into the pages of the PS3 Updates section on the PlayStation forum you will notice that there is a thread like this for every single firmware that has come out.

» Yeah I updated a few hours ago...

and mine works just fine, just finished playing Rockband2

by chessboxer - 2009-09-15 06:01
» meh

Disc games and Blu-ray films are working for me. Content on the HDD plays fine and PS2 games are still working.

Maybe whoever reported the problem has a hardware problem rather than it being firmware related.

by OriginalXOR - 2009-09-15 06:08
» Oh dear

Well Sony had better sort this out very quickly, as unfortunately a new UK law (possibly European too) means that if something gets 'broken' or otherwise 'disabled' via a digital download that is meant to update, then under this new law the customer can claim thier FULL money back - especially if it was a marketed feature, hmm like BluRay then. This is not a time-related gurantee, as courts now understand that hardware can get updated years after it's original release & purchase dates.

Just think how much you originally paid on your PS3, now take it back saying that Sony have disabled BluRay support, get your full money back and repurchase a Slim PS3, and still have some change left over for whatever you want.

by grzybek - 2009-09-15 06:14
» Works fine

everything working fine and im playing uncharted raight now! Fanks SONY;)

by OriginalXOR - 2009-09-15 06:28
» Still having issues with...

my White DualShock 3 controllers - They still dont work !!! (stopped working with 3.0)

my BluRay drive - It won't see released movies as recognised media !!!

Massive FAIL, although tomorrow I'm gonna get my refund, so through it all there are 'some' winners.

» hmm

do I smell a 360 fanboy?

by OriginalXOR - 2009-09-15 07:02
» nope

I'm certainly no fanboy, if anything I'm everything but as I own all current consoles & show no favour to any of the main 3.

Although when my console stops working, or rather no longer recognises my pads, nor video media that is inserted, then it ideally turns into little more than an expensive paperweight, and a paperweight I can get my money back for.

Guess I'm lucky as I haven't experienced any of these problems with recent firmwares at all.

by emcp - 2009-09-15 07:48

HE LYING

hes a fanboy, no genuine person would compare the ps3 or 360 to the wii

by wlukedukew - 2009-09-15 07:52
» Can't play any games

Is this a usual thing with the PS3? I haven't been able to play uncharted since I bought a slim. Now, I cant play anything! I'm taking this crap back.

by Scribe - 2009-09-15 07:56
» Hardware

These problems are clearly corrupt firmware update or hardware faults (be it Sony or the User who caused them).

I have several revisions of the PS3 from the original to the new models that store more data on the HDD. If formatting the HD and resetting to factory default settings doesn't work you've likely had a bodgey update but the issue is unlikely to be the update itself.

i'm on 3.0 but my white dualshock 3 still works..

by Lethal_NFS - 2009-09-15 08:50
» It is not the firmware

Both of my PS3's work just fine after the update. So the firmware update is not at fault. It would not affect certain consoles and not others.

by makaveli80 - 2009-09-15 09:19
» 3.01.....

My 60gb is running tip top on the new firmware.

MAG Beta Tester FTW!

» I smell brown stuff,

All these people that have had problems with the latest firmware that has caused their PS3's to brick are sending them back, yet theres 360 owners that are constantly sending back their consoles for a 4th time??

sounds too fishy for me!

But hey, I'll update my two PS3's later and we'll see if they brick eh?

by CLIFF BLESZINSKI - 2009-09-15 10:14
» all fine here

I've never had a problem with any update, just finished playing 5 straight hours of InFamous

» thankfully

looks like i wont have to update my ps3!

by ch13696 - 2009-09-15 14:08
» bull*****ters??

I still have my launch PS3. Every time I update I never see a problem (knock on wood). Then I see these people that do. I mean seriously? Because if a lot of us aren't having any problems yet you do, then there must be something you're doing wrong. I don't know what it is, but that's what it sounds like.

My personal opinion is, it might be 360 fanboys putting in false claims making Sony put in unnecessary firmware updates. And pretty soon it will literally kill the PS3 which eventually I will get those fanboys back for.

when in the xmb try shaking ur controler around and watch the sparklys move with the motion! just realized that outa boredom..

by Teivin - 2009-09-15 19:02
» Hmm

Funny how defensive PS3 fanboys get over firmware updates.

You know, a lot of problems can effect only a certain group of people. It can be a combination of parts (Since not all parts are created equal or even by the same manufacturer.), settings, already downloaded content (Maybe going from 2.X to 3.01 breaks things, while 2.y to 3.01 doesn't? Hence A lot of PC updates usually have you completely uninstall things to avoid conflicts. )

People need to stop crying BS and claiming its fanboys. It just makes their own camp look pretty retarded.

FYI, my PS3 works fine after the update. ...yet it still wont connect to wifi unless its standing vertically. Its a weird hardware glitch that I've never bothered getting fixed, since it works fine when propped up... so eh.

» Re:

You have just been judged a fanboy by two fanboys. LOL

by the by - 2009-09-16 04:37
» Fanboy bs eh?

Well how come my two ps3's (one launch 60gb and a 40gb) are working fine then? and if you are telling me people don't come on here to sprout lies to wind folk up then you're a liar!

If I don't see it with my own eyes then I take things that people post with a pinch of salt!

Ps the comments about ps3 fanboys, you're on a ps3 section so what did you expect, much like if I could be bothered to venture into the 360 section!
