Well, well, well. It came quietly, and it's now set to conquer your PS3's world. That's right, guys. You read the title right. Firmware 2.40 is now out, and we have our loyal tipsters to thank for the heads up: Eclipze-, Bugga12 and BaDaPpLe.
Looks like it was a simultaneous launch for both North American and European territories, so you guys might want to check it out yourselves now. We're downloading it right now, and you can bet we'll be updating you as more details come.
The in-game XMB and the trophies sure have got us all antsy here in anticipation. Anyway, make sure to read our previous coverage on the FAQ released for this particular firmware update so you won't be all to lost about it.
More tips are coming in! Thanks Ecco legendz, DaRk_jAcKaL (for the image, too)!

Anybody else noticed the new "Turn Off System" button in the Users section? I'm liking that :-D
I noticed that if you have a theme applied it replaces the new "Trophies" icon and a few others like Playlists with a question mark, i had the manga theme from PS Store and my icons messed up, thought 2.40 had screwed my system for a brief moment

and it doesnt work!

I had just went down out of pure curiosity, at about 4-5AM to see if it was already Up for grabs... Guess what? It's pretty nice! But games need to catch up with the new features BADLY. Seriously, not Warhawk needs to support XMB Music... it really does.
Also my trophy list seems to be ... empty, guess a restart could help. But right now, at 6:21AM, I rather sleep.
Later People.

Sony's not utilizing the PS3s processing power properly.
Other then that it's awesome, finally got a clock :)

Even in the firmware 2.4 video demo, Eric plays Pixel Junk Monster with ingame music. This crap doesn't work. I know sony will fix this issue with a few more updates, but as of now, The PS3 is going to collect a little more dust.

StarDust update wasn't online when I checked, 3 hours and about 15 minutes ago...
Too bad I can't get to my PS3 right now.

Also wasnt it PJM:Encore that supported trophies and in-game music, i dont have the encore so i cant say, anyone clarify?
Still this update added a few features worth while, in-game messaging and a xmb time/date.

Quit complaining and be happy Sony is actually listening and doing something about what us gamers want.
First it's, "we don't have in game xmb! Baww!"
Now it's, "Baww! Sony, you should have known I'm an impatient retard, why do you do this!"
You've been waiting for this update for a while, I'm sure. Can't you just wait a few more hours?

anyway i won't take long for them to find something to whine about.
personally to me when i bought the PS3 i know what it can do and what it can't for me, knowing those things, the PS3 is well worth it... so everything after that is just pure icing...
good upgrade Sony... well done!!!

most of the old school QJ regs, some of them you won't see here anymore, i still have contact with cause they've been on my buddy list for more than a year now... and most of the regs that are still here ofcourse i still see them online most of the time... i'll be checking your trophies out soon... when Home hits it's just going to get better.
and to the whiners below... once again i repeat most of us here knows what the PS3 can and can't do but still we bought it and it's probably because you think it's worth our money... if you bought it without thinking it's worth it then that's your issue and don't go crying to us about it.
so everything that we were given after like Remote Play, BD Live, In Game XMB, media streaming, themes, google, remade PSstore, Folding@Home, etc.. etc.. etc.. (i can't enumerate them all it's just too many)... are just bonuses after our purchase so act like adults and not whining retards just crying about everything.

ofcourse things are always under evaluation, we've seen them improve on a couple of things before... and besides the pros and cons of the current design won't be evident yet unless the mass market gets a hold of it which starts today.

they added the ability to have 100 friends on your list insted of just fifty...
i think thats pretty badass in my opinion considering the amount of people that play online and the amount of games that are online as well.
theres a few things sketchy about this update though...
1) lag on the ingame xmb.
2)no ingame music (goddamnit!)
3)very slim amount of games with the trophy update patch.
but all in all its a great success compared to before.. and of course everyone here knows that sony will fix tho's problems fast as they listen to the fans feedback.
also you must consider the amount of power thats going into having all this implimented into 1 patch on the ps3's incredibly powerful hardware as compared to xbox's weak simple harware witch makes it esier for them.
its only a matter of days till sony perfects the update. so i guess theres reason to complain just not harshly like sony doesnt give a sh*t about any of us ps3 owners. overall i give the firmware update a 9/10 just for the fact they fullfiled a long awaited wish of ingame xmb regardless of lag or bugs. effort is wut counts.

I am just saying that sony said this lets you play your own music in your games and that is not true. We all know what that's called. It's called a Lie.
In game XMB is ok for sending and receiving messages but that's pretty much it.

Firmware 2.4 is BY FAR the most disappointing update thus far. The trophies are not in nearly enough games. The in-game xmb lags like no *****ing tomorrow. In-game music...as many of you have mentioned...is extremely exclusive and only works on something like two games so far. I appreciate Sony's products as much as any other consumer...but this is *****ing pathetic. The 360 had all of this bull***** right out of the box. Why cant my PS3 - as superior as it is to the 360 - be able to do the same thing? I'm sure this will all be addressed in the future, but these are deffinitley problems that should be attended to BEFORE the update is made public.
To all of you who have been standing up for Sony: WHY THE ***** WOULD YOU RELEASE AN UPDATE FOR IN GAME MUSIC AND ONLY HAVE TWO GAMES THAT CAN USE IT? Stop acting like corporate puppets people. Sony doesn't know or care about you. They produce exceptional products...but that doesn't mean you ignore it when they ***** up. I love video game music...but I was really looking forward to being able to listen to some Dn'B while I play games like Winning Eleven, NBA Street, etc., I'm waiting for that next update Sony...chop chop.
On a last note...the 360 is *****ing garbage.

Maybe since the games we own were made before the update, they don't support it. Since the feature was not out months ago when the games we're playing now were developed, how would they implement it. One more thing ,it's up to the game companies to decide wether or not you get to listen to your own music. I had an Xbox that had the ability to play music on my hard-drive Burnout let me, Halo2 didn't. Some games won't ever let you listen to your own music, get over it.
At least we can message or friends no matter what games we're playing. I think whats tripping a lot of you up is that you have to have friends to use this feature, that disqualifies a lot of you whinny bastards.

And how can you have a patent on music playing in the background? You can still do that on computer games, is microsoft gonna sue all the apple users who do that? Besides, in the 2.4 demo vids, he DID show actual in-game music stuff (universal music playback) with PJMe, soooooo maybe 2.41 will turn everyone's frowns upside downs.....

you expected to play music in games that doesnt support it? it's like putting a piece of cheese in a toaster, and then expecting a cheesecake returns!

2: The game developers control if they want you to listen to their music and/or vice versa.
3: Stop being a$$holes.
4: Sony is doing everything to make the ps3 system work perfectly.
5: No one/nothing is perfect.
6: Give the developers time to create music support patches.
