FW 2.40 for PS3 - Image 1

Well, well, well. It came quietly, and it's now set to conquer your PS3's world. That's right, guys. You read the title right. Firmware 2.40 is now out, and we have our loyal tipsters to thank for the heads up: Eclipze-, Bugga12 and BaDaPpLe.

Looks like it was a simultaneous launch for both North American and European territories, so you guys might want to check it out yourselves now. We're downloading it right now, and you can bet we'll be updating you as more details come.

The in-game XMB and the trophies sure have got us all antsy here in anticipation. Anyway, make sure to read our previous coverage on the FAQ released for this particular firmware update so you won't be all to lost about it.

More tips are coming in! Thanks Ecco legendz, DaRk_jAcKaL (for the image, too)!

Nice, just installed and had a look before i go to bed as it's 5:26am ;-D .

Anybody else noticed the new "Turn Off System" button in the Users section? I'm liking that :-D

I noticed that if you have a theme applied it replaces the new "Trophies" icon and a few others like Playlists with a question mark, i had the manga theme from PS Store and my icons messed up, thought 2.40 had screwed my system for a brief moment :-)

I had just went down out of pure curiosity, at about 4-5AM to see if it was already Up for grabs... Guess what? It's pretty nice! But games need to catch up with the new features BADLY. Seriously, not Warhawk needs to support XMB Music... it really does.

Also my trophy list seems to be ... empty, guess a restart could help. But right now, at 6:21AM, I rather sleep.

Later People.

I just downloaded and i have to say that im extremely dissapointed with it, not only does in game xmb not do anything but its really a tease cuz all it does is show you that you might be able to play music while playing a game but you really cant. I know the reason most games dont support it cuz it just came out but seriously on an Xbox you can play music while playing a game whenever you want so how hard is it to do that on a ps3. the only thing thats good so far about in game xmb is that you can now respond to messages when you get them with out leaving the game. I was really looking forward to listening to music while playing games but every time i try to play any song with any game so far all i get is music content cant be played during the use of this game. sony really let me down. im pretty sure that coming out with an update that allows music to be listened to while playing any game on the ps3 isnt difficult i dont know why they just dont allow it. but hopefully in the near future they come out with an update that will allow music to be played during any game.

Sony's not utilizing the PS3s processing power properly.

Even in the firmware 2.4 video demo, Eric plays Pixel Junk Monster with ingame music. This crap doesn't work. I know sony will fix this issue with a few more updates, but as of now, The PS3 is going to collect a little more dust.

anyway i won't take long for them to find something to whine about.

personally to me when i bought the PS3 i know what it can do and what it can't for me, knowing those things, the PS3 is well worth it... so everything after that is just pure icing...

to all the QJ'ers who hasn't added me yet here's my PSN ID again... madicemann.

most of the old school QJ regs, some of them you won't see here anymore, i still have contact with cause they've been on my buddy list for more than a year now... and most of the regs that are still here ofcourse i still see them online most of the time... i'll be checking your trophies out soon... when Home hits it's just going to get better.

and to the whiners below... once again i repeat most of us here knows what the PS3 can and can't do but still we bought it and it's probably because you think it's worth our money... if you bought it without thinking it's worth it then that's your issue and don't go crying to us about it.

so everything that we were given after like Remote Play, BD Live, In Game XMB, media streaming, themes, google, remade PSstore, Folding@Home, etc.. etc.. etc.. (i can't enumerate them all it's just too many)... are just bonuses after our purchase so act like adults and not whining retards just crying about everything.

i dont want to complain but surely it would use less ram and power to just jave small sections of the xmb. not all the thumbnails9did you dee the first attempt of this on a debug ps3 from before release) you could click on the music tab and it opens that menu up instead of loading all the thumbnails up dont have any. and in game chat and pusic could have been added

have it up and running it would be simple enough to do a redesign later on if they wanted to... with a focus of economy of resource and user convenience...

ofcourse things are always under evaluation, we've seen them improve on a couple of things before... and besides the pros and cons of the current design won't be evident yet unless the mass market gets a hold of it which starts today.

only one who knows about the enlarged frineds list or wut?

they added the ability to have 100 friends on your list insted of just fifty...

i think thats pretty badass in my opinion considering the amount of people that play online and the amount of games that are online as well.

theres a few things sketchy about this update though...

1) lag on the ingame xmb.

2)no ingame music (goddamnit!)

3)very slim amount of games with the trophy update patch.

but all in all its a great success compared to before.. and of course everyone here knows that sony will fix tho's problems fast as they listen to the fans feedback.

also you must consider the amount of power thats going into having all this implimented into 1 patch on the ps3's incredibly powerful hardware as compared to xbox's weak simple harware witch makes it esier for them.

its only a matter of days till sony perfects the update. so i guess theres reason to complain just not harshly like sony doesnt give a sh*t about any of us ps3 owners. overall i give the firmware update a 9/10 just for the fact they fullfiled a long awaited wish of ingame xmb regardless of lag or bugs. effort is wut counts.

It is possible for Sony to add in game music through the XMB to any and all games, whether the games have been patched or not. This was something a lot of people were looking forward to. I don't play my ps3 all the time and don't care about messaging in game or trophies, i've been wanting in game music.

I think is stopping the audio from the game from playing while listening to music. If your play EA Skate, theres music already playing, it would have probably taken more time to make it work. so just be grateful for what we all get on July 2nd rather than next month.

seeing that we have users that dont pay attention or just cant read I have to get a few things straight. First is for flammingcowz. you obviously haven't been paying attention to post. yes it is possible for sony to put ingame music on all titles, but highly illegal, as this was posted earlier that microsoft patented universal xmb. Now for Bravo4 you should pay attention to the post as well, if so you would have seen my question and i quote "has anybody watched the 2.40 video" thus if you'd seen the video you'd know that I was talking about Pixel junk monsters: encore whitch isn't even out yet. and if you got that game six months ago you must have bought it in mexico and its probably not the real thing. So please fellow Qj members please read the full article and its reply's before you post, to keep yourself from looking like a retarded jackass of course.

Haha this is funny, something a lot of users have been waiting for is finally released and you do nothing but complain. The damn update has just been released, give it a few days/weeks and you'll see hoardes of devs releasing in-game xmb music & trophies patches, think about it, would developers just sit by and do nothing or would they get these patches out as quick as possible to make themselves more money? That's really what it's all about, if people who don't already own a ps3 hear that you can now play your own music in-game and collect trophies you can show off and brag about, then it may persuade them to buy a PS3. Making more money for Sony and it's respected developers.

OK...for those of you who will flame me for saying this...go suck Sony's *****. If you look back to any of my posts on this site...I am completely behind the PS3 as far as this generation goes. It was the first (and favourite to this day) of the three consoles that I owned. If you are going to reply to me with stupid Sony fanboyism then you should know that I'm already on your side so go ***** yourself.

Firmware 2.4 is BY FAR the most disappointing update thus far. The trophies are not in nearly enough games. The in-game xmb lags like no *****ing tomorrow. In-game music...as many of you have mentioned...is extremely exclusive and only works on something like two games so far. I appreciate Sony's products as much as any other consumer...but this is *****ing pathetic. The 360 had all of this bull***** right out of the box. Why cant my PS3 - as superior as it is to the 360 - be able to do the same thing? I'm sure this will all be addressed in the future, but these are deffinitley problems that should be attended to BEFORE the update is made public.

To all of you who have been standing up for Sony: WHY THE ***** WOULD YOU RELEASE AN UPDATE FOR IN GAME MUSIC AND ONLY HAVE TWO GAMES THAT CAN USE IT? Stop acting like corporate puppets people. Sony doesn't know or care about you. They produce exceptional products...but that doesn't mean you ignore it when they ***** up. I love video game music...but I was really looking forward to being able to listen to some Dn'B while I play games like Winning Eleven, NBA Street, etc., I'm waiting for that next update Sony...chop chop.

On a last note...the 360 is *****ing garbage.

Everyone said they wanted In-game XMB, you got it. What's the problem. Playing your own music in games is a different story. Game developers don't want you to listen to your own music. I mean you can listen to your own music on GTA on the PSP, it's not that hard.

Maybe since the games we own were made before the update, they don't support it. Since the feature was not out months ago when the games we're playing now were developed, how would they implement it. One more thing ,it's up to the game companies to decide wether or not you get to listen to your own music. I had an Xbox that had the ability to play music on my hard-drive Burnout let me, Halo2 didn't. Some games won't ever let you listen to your own music, get over it.

At least we can message or friends no matter what games we're playing. I think whats tripping a lot of you up is that you have to have friends to use this feature, that disqualifies a lot of you whinny bastards.

your ass is *****ing retarded to but only blindly. why can't my ps3 do the same thing? its called a paten idiot, its kinda no suprise cause microsoft often patents the most retarded things. and yes the xmb lag is bad and and i agree about it being experimental, but keep in mind they are working on HOME and getting ready for E3 and with all those complaints from users its no wonder they release experimental things cause you guys can't wait long enough to let them test their products. how long where we all useing windows xp before vista came out and was vista free?.....my point exactly it takes time and money to perfect a product. PSN is free as compared to XBL, might I add that sony lost 3.2 billion US dollars to give us all the ps3 at a cheaper price and all its free content. So really no one should complain about anything because in the end updates are just something extra.

Buuuuut super stardust had in-game custom tracks from your PS3's harddrive ever since the game was released like a year ago. So the firmware did not really do anything musicwise. It just added some rinkydink music player controller.

And how can you have a patent on music playing in the background? You can still do that on computer games, is microsoft gonna sue all the apple users who do that? Besides, in the 2.4 demo vids, he DID show actual in-game music stuff (universal music playback) with PJMe, soooooo maybe 2.41 will turn everyone's frowns upside downs.....

they got around the paten with patches for individual games thus making it non-universal duh honestly no one pays attention or has enough common sense to figure this out. and were not talking pc platform, were talking gaming console. you paten software not by what they do, but how they do it, but if you figure out a way to do it different then you get around the paten as sony has done

If you would have been paying attention to the blog and watched the videos about 2.4 you would understand that Sony didn't lie about anything. They added the functionality for in game music to work so that developers can now incorporate it into their games if they wish. Some games will probably get patched, some won't.

If they wanted you to be able to listen to your music they could have patched MGS4. But they could care less. Besides how are games that are already out supposed to support a new feature like this without patching their game. Does MGS4 have an option to turn off the music, if not you would here both tracks, yours and the games. You see it takes effort to implement new features, when the devs. put forth that effort than you can listen to your music.

2: The game developers control if they want you to listen to their music and/or vice versa.

3: Stop being a$$holes.

4: Sony is doing everything to make the ps3 system work perfectly.

5: No one/nothing is perfect.

6: Give the developers time to create music support patches.
