Just a little over a week after we last heard from the company, Sony has released yet another version of its PS3 firmware. This latest update now brings it all up to version 1.51, and according to the System Software Update section of the PlayStation website, this new version contains the following additions:
  • You can now select an image to use as the User icon from [Photo].
  • [Key Tone] has been added as an option under [Sound Settings].
  • [Delete Backup Data] has been added as an option under [System Settings] > [Backup Utility].
  • WEP 128, WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA-PSK (AES) have been added as security methods that can be used with [AOSS] under [Automatic].
    • If you have already set up for AOSS using an earlier version of the system software, you must perform AOSS setup again to use the security methods listed above.
    • When [Automatic] is selected, the security method to be used is automatically set.
  • New for 1.51: Support for PLAYSTATION 3 format software titles has been expanded.
  • The method for saving your password / signing in automatically under PLAYSTATION Network has been changed. There are now two separate options.
  • You can now enter text in Korean using the on-screen keyboard.
As of the moment, it's unknown if this new version of the firmware also addresses the problems related to Blu-Ray playback and wireless internet connections, which we reported about a while back. These issues were supposed to have suddenly appeared when PS3 owners updated their console's firmware to 1.50.

I was having some nasty wifi issues w/ 1.50 causing me random disconnects but since I updated to 1.51 I have not had any issues. It could be a coincidence but it seemed more likely to be firmware relevant.

I have not tried blu-ray playback since 1.31.

If it was in 1.50 - how is it a new feature for 1.51? :S

» Re: huleboeren

its not for 1.51. if you didnt know by now, Sony always puts their older release notes in addition with the new update notes. the "new for 1.51" part of the summary QJ provided is the only new feature. the image as user icon is part of the 1.50 update

Sony has always done this. This way you can see both the 1.50 and 1.51 updates. same thing with 1.10 and 1.11

and 1.3 and 1.32 etc...

» download speed

Try downloading at offpeak times like 3am or something. I regularly get 6mbit+ from sony. You can't expect to get super bandwidth from them when millions of people are bombarding their servers.
