PS3 firmware v3.21 now live, "Other OS" removed

Yes folks, the highly controversial firmware update of the PlayStation 3 that disables the "Other OS" feature is now live.

Announced earlier this week, the update strips the “Install Other OS” feature of the older generation phat models that caused quite an uproar in the PS3 community. According to Sony, this move is needed to "ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system", but some believe this is connected to geohot’s hacking the PS3 way back in January.

Thanks to dPaulski, Ransom, Slavicc and Farris for the tips!

I paid for the feature of Other OS as well as the free PSN the removal of either one is a thievery. I was doing nothing wrong and without justification or proof of damages they removed a feature based on the "potential for damages" .

you didn't. You paid for the hardware. Check your T's+C's and you'll find that the software that runs on 'your' hardware is owned by Sony. They have the right to alter, amend or delete anything at any time. Much like government. The end.

Then, now that we can get inside, we'll make our own software for the hardware YOU just rightfully stated we own...

Karma's a bitch, SONY... you just started what happened to the PSP and took it to a whole new level... and... I got web WITHOUT updating (now aka removing features... thought that was usually considered downgrading...?)

Exactly, it's in the T&C that you agreed to by buying and using the console. They have the right to change anything as they wish.

When you bought a PS3 you bought;

Playstation 3 hardware
T&C that includes the ability to play licensed games*

*Which Sony can change at any point. If they wanted to block a game from running they could, say if it contained malicious code or contained sensitive data (think Hot Coffee mod).

# you cant pay for something freeGuest 2010-04-02 11:17
:o

How can you have paid for free PSN? You may have bought a ps3 becausse PSN was free, which is certainly better than the alternative, but its sony service. whether or not they charge a fee is 100% entirely up to them, and they can start charging 100 bucks a year if they want. Whether you choose to continue to support them, thats the only place you have any say.

Now the other OS removal is complete bull, seeing as i can see some people actually having bought a system for that purpose

So by your logic, it's perfectly okay for Sony to render every PS3 unable to play BluRay movies in the future should they so wish?

Because it's not, and what they've done here is EXACTLY the same thing on a slightly smaller scale. Just because it has less of an impact, doesn't mean it's justified. Don't overthink this, you'll just end up confusing yourself. The simple truth of the matter is that Sony have misled millions of customers.

Here it comes. The back and forth stupidity between hackers and Sony that we've come to know on the PSP. Please don't let it kill this system. Sony people need to chill. I am personally going to wait to upgrade since I'm just going to be playing Just Cause 2 anyway. We'll see where this leads...

Wow. I seriously thought it was a joke. I just didn't believe that Sony would really do something this stupid.

I really hate litigation and all that, but I seriously hope somebody sues them over this. They should have to refund the original purchase price to everybody with a phat (and of course they wouldn't want to do that, so they should give in and put the other os back).

You do not own the code to the software that runs on a PS3. Why do people think that a console is different from any other software. Microsoft and Apple update ...their... software to stop security issues all the time. This is no different. If any person seriously thinks that installing linux was paid for in the PS3 price tag then they are idiots. It was a feature. Owned by Sony, run by Sony and ultimately to be deleted by Sony if they so choose. A la someone has hacked our hardware. Seriously I'm getting sick of this Sony bashing because their console can no longer use Linux. Buy a computer. For a lot less money.

Yeah but what if Sony was about to release PS4 and decided to say "we don't want to support PS3 anymore" and they release an update that people think is something good and it turns out it disables their system entirely, forcing you to not be able to play PS3 games? I know that sounds evil, but what do you think would happen?

That would be illegal in some countries.
it was sold to you to play games and watch blu rays, so must it do. they cant intentionally break it legally just because they own the rights to thier software and wont because what would be the point?

It was also sold to run linux via the other os feature. It is the exact same thing as if they removed the ability to play games or blu-ray.

Not to mention that Sony shipped the PS3 as a computer system allowing import tax breaks in some countries(game consoles cost more). They deliberately circumvented duty/tax laws in these countries and hopefully some will make them pay for the crime, although Sony must certainly have felt this out legally.

i bought the ps3 because of all the features it had INCLUDING other o.s. which i use for legit reasons
if there was a security problem then its on sony to fix the problem, not take the option away so they just dont have to worry about it
i paid for THAT option as well as many others
PAID is the keyword, if they go back on that AFTER i PAID for it, then they should have to give FULL REFUNDS
as far as buyin a pc if i wanted to use a other os, well it says sony computer of america, and that option was meant to make people believe they could use the ps3 as a pc if they choose to,so it was intentially used to misslead consumers to purchase this spacific product
im pretty sure the other o.s. feature was meant for the computer part of sony computer of america , which is o yea, on the ps3 box!

exactly same thing we needed to suck up and deal with like the removal of backwards compatibility we didn't pay for the technology (those of us with 40gb models) so we don't get the technology. We didn't pay for the "Other OS" feature to begin with so so it was taking and nothing we can do with it. You have a choice, don't update! The only thing you can't do is log in nothing else is forcing you to. If you enjoy linux that much then you can't miss PSN. It's not like you pay for that either and have to deal with getting refunds. I bought my system to play games and bought a computer to type things like this :D (ps3 browser...eh not so much but hey its free also) This should only effect the nerds which are also the ones who would open their system up for geohot's mod, so if they are that mad about this they can go bye bye with the feature the scene won't miss them. "R is for naughty movies and pirates!"

for 1 , yes theres a way to login to psn even if you dont update, 2 we shouldnt have to do it that way because we paid for it all , and 3
the MAIN reason i bought a ps3 was FREE ONLINE which they offered as well for life
thus makin the diffrence between buyin a 360 and buyin a ps3
soon even that wioll be taken away , its gonna cost to go online and the web browser is going to be next to go , im pretty sure, but eh , who am i anyways, im just the guy who dishes out alot of money for this shit just to get bitch-slaped by the corp as a ty

Whats with the minus :). I don't hate the home-brew scene on the PSP, I hate the way SONY treats it. They just don't want to let it live, so they spend their resources on killing it (and piracy with it) instead of on cool new features and good games for the awesome little handheld. Just don't want the same to befall my PS3.

And I totally agree with Snaku about the whole sueing thing (although probably not possible because we agreed to some stupid terms of use agreement when buying/using our PS3). This is totally unfair to people who own phats. What are they going to do next take out backward compatibility to increase profits on PSN classic titles?

Y'know, I've been pretty loyal to Sony ever since the psx. I liked the way they did things better, and I was especially happy when ps2 games didn't stop coming out right after the ps3 released. My ps2 didn't turn into a paperweight overnight like my xbox did. Then they took bc out of newer systems and I was annoyed, but at least I had a launch 60 so I was fine.

Now this. I haven't used Linux on my ps3 but it was always something I was going to get around to eventually. Right after I decided I had $100 or so to burn to buy a bigger hdd for it (or however much a 500g hdd would cost). It's not like I bought the ps3 BECAUSE it could do linux, but I always liked the idea. And now I can't.

F*** Sony! That's the last freakin' Sony product I ever buy. I hope the ps3 does get hacked: I'll pirate every game from then on just to stick it to them (ok, probably not: I'm betting hacked ps3's will be blocked from psn, and I'm not gonna' give up my lbp).

Is there anything constructive we can do? Whining is great and all, but it's not gonna' bring back other os. A class action suit (or even any lawsuit) would be awesome, and I hope it happens, but I'm not going to be the one to pull the trigger (and foot the bill). Maybe if everybody inundates them with e-mails, they'll reconsider. Any idea where we send the e-mails to?

For those of you who would prefer to use PS3.ProxyServer.GUI instead of LG5tool, "the_miker" from GeoHot's comments has made a mini guide you can follow that allows you to bypass the firmware check so you can sign in to PSN while still using firmware 3.15, enabling you to keep OtherOS until GeoHot comes up with something..

- On your PS3, sign out of PSN
- Download and install PS3.ProxyServer.GUI here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ywnmy1wykzi
- It doesn't create shortcuts so navigate to C:\Program Files\CF3B5\PS3.ProxyServer and run PS3.ProxyServer.GUI.exe
- Type your current LOCAL IP ADDRESS (probably 192.168.*.*), you can leave the port as 8080, check PS3 Mode
- Whatever port you use must be open on your router, so if 8080 is blocked, open it now
- Go to the Replace Files tab and click Add
- In the left box, paste this address: http://fus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/...
- In the right box, click browse and find your LOCAL COPY of the 3.15 ps3-updatelist.txt file, download from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dyjldy24yod
- Back to the Proxy Settings tab, click Start
- From your PS3's XMB, go to Settings, Network Settings, then Internet Connection Settings
- Keep everything the way you have it configured now except for the Proxy Server option, make sure you click Use
- Type the IP address and port number to your local computer (from step 4 above)
- Finish configuring, test connection, make sure it connects
- That's it. If the connection test works, you can now sign into PSN with 3.15 and bypass the 3.21 firmware check
- Note that you must keep PS3.ProxyServer.GUI running when you want to use your PS3 until we get CFW :)

Resistance 2 - Online.

Note: If you have a server running on the same computer you might have to do 1 or 2 things.

Stop the Apache server - or What eve server
Use another computer for the PS3.ProxyServer.GUI

I've compiled a installer for this unit. Props are given to the maker.

Located on my site: http://trading-post.sytes.net:6969/forum/download.php?id=637

PPL: Feel free to take said installer and place it somewhere for redistributing. I do no have the bandwidth to host

You wanna know the best thing about all of this? If the PS3 'dies' because of piracy or whatever becomes of this:

GeoHot: I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Sony has brought all of this upon themselves. They can point the finger all they want...but in the end, theymade the fatal mistake.

Message to Sony: 3.22 bring back OtherOS lest lose your baby.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. We'll have to wait and see if Move sells or bombs first. My money is on it bombing. The whole reason people bought PS3s and 360s was because they didn't care about motion control in the first place. How are you going to convince people to drop $100 on accessories that will more than likely hinder your experience. Example. Call of Duty. Move/Natal player VS Basic Controller player: Chances are, controller wins 8/10 times.

that's because Natal is crap? It's a damn eyetoy, no matter how you overhype it. No buttons = No way to play complicated games. The only real games that can work on it are driving, and if you watch Burnout you'll see how clunky it is when played on Natal. Move at least has some potential, since i played Metroid trilogy and i gotta say, the controls were amazing.

You are being too narrow minded. There is nothing stopping games from being able to track your movement with Natal AND use a normal Xbox 360 pad, at the same time. So in fact, it has plenty of buttons.

I think the best games in fact will be the ones that use Natal as an extension of the pad rather than a replacement which is what Fable 3 will do, as you really couldn't play that game entirely without a pad.

PS4 Feature list
-----------------

EVERYTHING THE PS3 CAN DO EXCEPT:

- Play PS1, 2 or 3 games
- watch blu-ray movies
- Operating system deal with microsoft to give you unpatched Windows Vista for firmware
- plus laods more great features for twice the launch price of the ps3 in Australia (meaning, $2000)

..at least, that's all I see should Sony keep this shit up. Anyone agree/disagree?

is it more likely that "hackers" can be the blame used to take a option away that people supported or is it more likely that sony just doesnt want to be bother'd by it to have to secure it

I too am annoyed by Sony for taking the steps (I used OtherOS in the past and was glad it was there), but I'm even more annoyed by this stupid need for some kids to prove they can hack anything. As with piracy, it is the hackers that will spoil it for the honest customers. The only way GeoHot can help is by ceasing his activity, if this escalates into the same thing that happened to the PSP, we are going to be in a world of hurt as honest paying customers. Why can't hackers just leave it alone?

I don't think they made anything else with the 'security'.

Well, if Sony really did that, that means that they red what Geo discovered and, together with their OS knowledge, they saw that unlock could be possible using the otherOS feature. That is why they disabled it or would not have any sense.

That's my opinion.

Thank GeoHot for this stupidity not Sony. Everyone says it is a potential hole, but it is real. Sony engineers know their security, they know what GeoHot has exposed and realize that with more brainpower he could actually accomplish the creation of the first hacked PS3, I mean really hacked PS3. Loaders, Homebrew, etc. They don't give a shit about homebrew, but piracy is huge especially when they get most of their revenue from royalties on the sales of BD Games/Movies. What do you think killed the Dreamcast? The lack of security. Sure it may pish hardware, but they don't make the big bucks on hardware, they make it on software. Anyone still crying about this update needs to bitch at GeoHot for making his work public before it lead anywhere. The Dreamcast was long dead before piracy took hold, everyone was waiting on the PS2. The killer of the Dreamcast was the flop of the Saturn, people lost trust in SEGA.

Ironically Sony are risking the same thing by removing features from the PS3. People are losing trust in them. Nobody in their right mind is going to buy a product that there is a risk will have features removed over its lifetime. You can accept online features being removed over a long period of time, but actual functionality of the box you bought that should "just work" without external influences, unacceptable.

If this has been a kitchen appliance that suddenly had a feature removed we would consider it defective. What would you do if the freezer part of your fridge/freezer suddenly stopped working? Or your Microwave suddenly only worked on Low power? These are features we were sold when we bought the product, we do not expect them to be suddenly taken away from us artificially.

So, what this says to me is...

Sony would rather waste time to win in a pissing contest with one person (a young talent)than spend that time "providing" consumers with the features they have been "promising" since the launch of the PS3.

Sony fails to realize that what a consumer does with his/her purchased product is that consumer's business...not Sony's!

What better way to show how small you (Sony) really are?

But they lied and said it was 100htz when I purchased it. purchased two of your ps3's and three psp systems to now get pissed on Again. Sony can forget my custom again. They are deceiving with what they do and will lie to get you to purchase products. Fact! What happend to playing ps3 games through remote play on psp they did`nt even try. Sony has got to be one of the worst companies out there.

My 60 GB PS3 broke down not long ago. I have an extended warranty on it and got my full price back.

Don't know if I will get another PS3, I'll stick with my XBOX 360. At least, I still have the features that the XBOX came with.

Not only are removing other OS, but if you don't upgrade to this new firmware, you can't login to PlayStation Live, you lose the ability to play certain games/ Blu-ray, etc.

I smell a class action lawsuit. This is utterly ridiculous. Sony used to be a good company but they are becoming a bad company.

Also, their needs to be a class action lawsuit against Sony for their advertising.

Sony is doing false advertising, this needs to be pointed out to a judge also. Sony claims that the PS3 "It Only Does Everything" which is false advertising espically since they removed PS2 support from the new systems and are now removing OpenOS.

For now enjoys playing online.

Waits patiently.

He, he they can't remove ps2 backwards compatibility on the 60gb's could they, i mean its in the hardware level.

I don't believe that one hacker's foot in the door is the main reason for the update but still, we all agree to the terms, and hacking isn't allowed so Sony adapts. If it was made to be an emulation machine it would be different. What huge benefits did the install other OS have anyway? Well, doesn't effect me in any way. But still, Sony doing this because of a little exlpoit... still far fetched.

How many have forgotten what Microsoft did a while back, taking away people's Online access on the 360 when they found those said people were using prirated copies.

how can u compare someone who is actually using a pirated game vs PS3 hack which was really nothing and who knows if and when something would have came out of it. Sony is just assuming stuff and when u assume, you make and ASS out of U and ME, and i'm no ass SONYYYYY i won't be updating for awhile don't need to be online for FFX111 since i don't care about trophies that much same with all my other games. Not that i condone pirating or hacking but its all about paying for something then having the company take it away. That would be like Ford selling me a new truck and then coming back and saying that i modified it and takes the engine away would u not be pissed. Think about it people, i want what i payed for and what was advertised regardless if i use it or not.

# well if they were pirate then!Guest 2010-04-01 18:55
the difference between the what microsoft did and what is sony doing is different microsoft punished people who were pirating there system, i aint i am using my playstation as a secondary computer in my house the way it was advertised to me (by installing linux on it) and true there own indication on how to, now that the reason why they took the option is because or not of geohotz hack is not my problem and in no way should i be penalised for it in any way, as i see it now mather if i do or do not update i get penalised by either loosing the capacity of running and os on my ps3 as advertised and explained by sony or i am loosing the capacity of running online game on it without having to install software on a second computer to use a proxy wich offer no promises of working in the long run and with all game.

so no microsoft did not do something as bad as sony is currently by penalising all there user for the hack of one and as other have pointed out they might have even put fuel on the fire by doing so.

What are you, stupid? No one's pirating anything.. yet. It's basically like opening the screen door of a house, you're kinda in but you need to get the main door unlocked.

I can understand banning pirates, but removing a feature heavily advertised, saying you wouldn't remove it, and giving barely a week's notice? please.

Well I'm as pissed as the next guy, but honestly we're all talking out of our asses. We have no idea what's really going on.

I mean, I kinda doubt that one guy with a half-baked and hitherto unutilized "hack" scared sony into doing something so obviously stupid. But maybe he did.

I also doubt it was a April Fool's joke, but it might be. (Incidentally, was this update worldwide? I didn't see. Did Japan get hit by this too?)

Here's something I just thought of though: Perhaps Sony is removing it to strip out some fluff from the FW to make way for the code for Move? Or perhaps something else in the future? It seems like a ass-backwards way of doing it, but hey, it's Sony. They do ass-backwards stuff. I don't know, but it's frankly as good a theory as the rest of them, as far as we know.

I really just wish Sony communicated with us better. If they gave an explanation as to WHY they do what they do, I would be less angry, if not understanding.

There is no need to update, you can succesfully log-in to the PSN, Play Games and so on, while staying on 3.12 . Its very easy actually, but instruction weren't clear to do it.

Search for PS3 Proxy Server Gui!!
you'll find plenty of Guides on "ps3news.com"

I have Windows 7 64-bit (x64) Ultimate, and "IT WORKS!" My ps3 just log-in to the PSN and such!

It does work on Windows 7 and you dont have to set it on any compatibility mode. Simply know a lil about routing and such.

Like opening PORTS, bcz I have 2 routers connected one after another and then the modem. So I had to go to my Router (Belkin) and open the port, the port you can pick which ever you want but it must match the one u put on the PS3 and the Proxy Server GUI.

further help or such, email me. or message me :P

GeoHatz! Your definitely a brilliant mind, for starting a battle with Sony. Cheers my friend. as Well THANKS to the creators of the Ps3 Proxy Server GUI!! For letting us continue under the Homebrew Scene.

# Ideas for SonySuperSZ 2010-04-01 21:03
Ideas for Sony, for future firmware updates:

-Remove PS2 backwardcompati bility with the PS3s that have that
-Make paid PSN
-Make paid web browser
-Remove the feature of playing Blu Ray movies (so you need to buy a Sony Blu Ray Player)
-Make some kind of mode that when you turn on the console it says that you MUST update it to use it, and by updating you lose all the things named above.

Eventually all that stuff will happen (maybe not the 'remove blu ray player' but all the rest yes). Saying 'fuck Sony' doesn't even represent 0,1% of what people will feel.

a free game? Man, with OtherOS you could install 'zerogame project' and you could play basically all the SNES, Genesis, GBA, Turbografix, etc. etc. etc. games. Now you can't. That's what pissed me off, I don't really cared about Linux that much, I was about to install it JUST for that but now I can't (I mean I can, I haven't upgraded yet... but I won't be able to play online and stuff if I don't upgrade)

See, I was unaware you could use Linux on the PS3 to play roms and use emulators.
I was interested in using the feature, as a backup for if ever my laptop wasn't functioning, for Word etc. But, after reading some of the comments and finding out you could use it for roms, I'm quite upset I never got round to actually using it.
I have yet to update, though. But, I would like to play online. I just received the Sony Headset I ordered.

You can actually use that brand new headset you just order, and even set-up linux on the OtherOS and emulators to plays games.

I'm by-passing the PS3 Firmware update by using the PS3 Proxy Server GUI.(Computer Application) Basically it makes the PS3 think it has the most up-to-date firmware, thus allowing me to keep linux on the OtherOS and play online and sign in the PSN and such....

Idk why people are complaining much that awww... We have to update. Yea the update is mandatory, but there's a thing called "By-Passing" things.

People who blame a person for altering software at there own risk are crazy first thing first sony has supposedly all this security to hackers but they are scared that someone will get through through the other os what do they think this will stop it no it's a spit in the face of hackers and home brewers everywhere as you can see from this discussion there are a lot of pissed people and in the end it will end up hurting them all the worst thing of ALL! is they didn't even give us a little special something for updating other than the fact that i can use psn again kinda makes me feel like they don't really give a sh!t about what we think and what we want and that pisses me off i will not give in to them i hope a CFW does come out i had respect for sony for allowing us this long until a problem happened and now i have lost it Soooo Anyone from any scene of hacking should destroy them for what they have done. 8)

Everything works Nice! ha! You beat me ChaosZero112 lolz. I had to do some thinking on the Proxy GUI, but eeh....thats how u learn to do things.

Anyways PEOPLE! There are 2 WAYS TO DO IT!!! The Primary DNS to 67.202.81.137 like ChaosZero said, or the PS3 Proxy Server GUI.

Yes the Proxy Server GUI works for WINDOWS 7 64-BIT. I have it running before I read chaoszero post. lolz

Still Keep in mind both options bcz you never know if Sony does something to block that specific DNS. or soemthing

If you cant get the proxy to work (it crashes in Win7 64bit for me) then try this

Under network settings have everything like normal.
Change Primary and secondary DNS to 67.202.81.137

I'm not sure why but it works. You can do everything you normally do like online games and PSN but it doesn't ask for an update. :)

I would say to all PS3 users, contact your state attorney general and tell what Sony did to your system.

Also contact the US Attorney General at http://www.justice.gov/contact-us.html about what Sony did.

Also contact your senators about this also.

I'm not sure but I believe what Sony has done with the update has never been done before. Sony needs to be made an example of if. If Sony can do this, what's gonna stop other companies from doing the same thing.

Sony could decide to remove the web browser, they could remove the PS2 features on the Phat systems, etc.

You pay for the console and the 'promise' that is on the box you buy it in and the manual with it. Additional features are nice, but removing features is indeed Theft. I for one don't really cared for the slow Yellow Dog installation (yet), however I do feel ripped off, just the same.

What if they are now going to say: Hey, we remove the Music section, because you might have embedded code in an MP3, or the Pictures part, as there might be a TIFF exploit in there....And owww....of course remove the gaming section, as Savegames have been the main culprit on the PSP, soooo, maybe it will also be on the PS3!!

I have several Sony products, however that doesn't say I can not criticize.

I think there will be civil suit and maybe even a corporate lawsuit, because some use the PS3 for science projects or processing.

I've read posts threatening Class-action lawsuits, breach of Trading Standards...
Face it, none of these will stand up. We all know Sony's ToC statement will proven to be bulletproof. I have not, or never will be intending to install Linux. However, this really isn't the point here is it? The point is a matter of principle. For instance, here's one for those drivers out there:
All of you have ready access to whatever brake-Horsepower your car currently commands. You may not ever USE it, but you have it, it's advertised, and you may be proud of it. Now, it goes in for it's MOT. When it emerges, you get happily informed that it now has 100bHP LESS than it did before. The alternative would be that you would be unable to drive the car lawfully on public roads.
Will it impede your driving at all? No, of course it won't. Would you accept this situation? No, of course you won't. Would lawyers be involved at some point? Yes!

Here is a clear parallel with this PS3 situation. What will happen? Nothing!

Uh,

People have contacted their state attorney generals and have been told that they do have a case.

What Sony did according to the attorney generals is bait and switching, plain and simple and in that case, the TOS and EULA would be invalidated.

Doesn't matter what the EULA/TOS says, consumer laws over-ride them.

Some people actually bought the product because they wanted to add a OS, some people put lots of extra money into customizing their ps3 and now its wasted, some people actually wanted to have the opportunity to customize their ps3 but now they cant so since when is it okay to take away features on a product? If you want to keep Other OS, just don't update, and buy a slim to be used as an updated console. But wait...We have PC's! That run emulators better than a PS3! so i dont see the point in complaining about another removed feature thats not even necessary anyway. But on the other hand. Sony has a reputation of removing features. I saw this coming. And whatever they decide to move next....I don't care! I'm still gonna use my PS3 until Next gen is released. All I have to say to Sony is Good Move! I wouldve done the same. So go ahead, try to hack it another way(which is doubtful) cause that will be patched also. I'm with ya on that one. This is bait and switch plain and simple. Sony heavily advertised the Playstation 3's features and functionality. Among that list of features was the option or ability to run a Linux distribution under the "Install Other OS" option settings. Whether or not it was considered a major selling point has nothing to do with the fact that it was ADVERTISED and people purchased the hardware with the said advertisements. Backward compatibility was another major selling point of the system in it's early release. I even have the original PS3 manual to prove it.

# I don't want to fight but they leave me no choice.Guest 2010-04-05 02:52
I have had count them TWO accounts which no longer post anything to the PlayStation blog. I love my PS3 but this is the line, I use my linux, I'm a computing student, and this isn't right. I posted this on their blogs everywhere as a last effort, I know they won't put the OS back in now, so I want a solution everyone can live with, this is the post I get banned for.

PLEASE READ and consider, I’m trying to reach out here.

If you refuse to improve security, and shake things up, rather than taking out OS, consider this. Make PSN, and ALL future games compatible with 3.15. THEN, *stay with me*, have people give up OtherOS by offering features they DO want. Most everyone is already on 3.21, offer those refusing on principal something they want, you have a list on your Share Blog. People want new features, and 99.5% will upgrade for these things. To get the new features you MUST upgrade. So since most everyone wants these, you get everybody but honest Linux users, and maybe a small handful of hardcore hackers to give up the OtherOS. See how that works, you can use carrots to close up your hole for the most part, and still not punish honest linux users and programmers. I honestly think this would solve enough of your problem to make it a nil issue. It would get people like me off of your back. I will even let you at Sony take the credit for the idea. And its a start to repairing your image in my eyes.

So nobody responds to me at Sony to talk like adults, so I filed with the FTC, BBB, and there is word that a class action is getting together and should be more news this week. I REALLY don't want to fight PlayStation, I LOVE the brand. But unless they can at least let me play online with my friends on PSN, and continue to BUY new games and support the studios I love, than we are at a disagreement. I don't care that I can't upgrade to new firmware to get new features, that will be the price I pay, I will still at least get to keep what I paid for. My idea is a last ditch effort, I don't want to see piracy crush the studios I love and admire either. So I offer this as an alternative to Sony before it gets even uglier. For this I get banned on the blogs twice. This is the kind of company we are dealing with, and if you have a fat PS3 I urge you to stand up for yourselves, post on the blogs, email and call them, file with FTC etc.

Hypervisor has been dumped. Custom firmware will be here by the end of the year. I'm glad I don't use my ps3 that much online so I don't have worry about updating

With a lot of work I have finally managed to get a buckup launcher running on my 60gb ps3 firmware 3.15. I will release the sourcecode later in the week as it has a few bugs that need to be cleaned out. I hope some devs can work with this as it has took a long time to get it at the point it is. Now i'm stuck. I have successfully run 3 backups from iso on an external western hdd...Uncharted 2, COD MW2 and fifa 2010

I would just like to add, that I just updated to 3.21 and I am not longer able to play God of War 3. An eternal black screen follows "Sony Computer Entertainment presents"...... So I will take this literally, and say that, as usual SCE presents.... nothing.

Skip the server program, this works like a charm and you don't need to install anything!

Just change the primary DNS server and you're good! Confirmed working on my 60GB launch EU PS3, fw 3.15.

# PS3 SlimGuest 2010-04-07 09:42
The only thing i cant still figur out is,: the ps3 Slim didnt have any Linux, so, why did we had to upgrade it too,?
what happend else in the firmware update?

and sombody said this should be a 3.14 or 3.12 and i tottaly agree,
Sony, ATleast give Us some EXTRA Features we can all benefit from, full remote play(play mini's for example on the G0 or 2m/3mobo's) and some other stuff

You should all kill yourselfs for releasing somthing, you told us you would not remove!

I always pawned the xbox fan boys with: atleast we have Linux, and they had nothing to say,

And now? the graphics lol, its much better then x-box but still,

give us something.

# lots of crap here.Guest 2010-04-09 17:21
i think sony has more experience as a gaming console producer than many of you people have in console gaming. sony doesn't make moves like this one if it would be easy to sue them. they see these updates coming long before, so they take precautions through the terms of use and such. anyway, is true that vendors only sell the rights over the hardware, but not for the software. that means, ofcourse, that you are free to put whatever os on your ps3. but on the other hand game devs are free to require a certain os for their games. so it's all a matter of compromise for the end-user. have fun with the os of your choice and play whatever you find, if you find anything, or stick to our os and play everything you desire... if you pay for the games. and about paying for console games: i'd have no problem, but some of them cost like 3 times the price of the pc versions. take valve's orange box, for example. that's why i wouldn't buy a ps3, because the games i like are also on pc (except for the hot shots golf series :(( )

I noticed something else the last upgrade gave us. It was...
A tiny timer in the lower left-hand corner when you use iPlayer!
No, wait... the could have been the BBC's doing. Ah well, still nothing else then.

A post a few minutes ago caught my eye over at the blog.
"George Hotz [Moderator] 3 minutes ago

To all still on 3.15, you may update your PS3 as the CFW will work from 3.21 as well.
Its taking a bit more time than I expected so I advise you update and I promise it will include 3.21 support"

Interesting if true.
