PS3 firmware v3.21 now live, "Other OS" removed |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: firmware update, Geohot, playstation 3 updates, SCE, Sony
Ó

Yes folks, the highly controversial firmware update of the PlayStation 3 that disables the "Other OS" feature is now live.
Announced earlier this week, the update strips the “Install Other OS” feature of the older generation phat models that caused quite an uproar in the PS3 community. According to Sony, this move is needed to "ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system", but some believe this is connected to geohot’s hacking the PS3 way back in January.
Thanks to dPaulski, Ransom, Slavicc and Farris for the tips!

Karma's a bitch, SONY... you just started what happened to the PSP and took it to a whole new level... and... I got web WITHOUT updating (now aka removing features... thought that was usually considered downgrading...?)
Reply
When you bought a PS3 you bought;
Playstation 3 hardware
T&C that includes the ability to play licensed games*
*Which Sony can change at any point. If they wanted to block a game from running they could, say if it contained malicious code or contained sensitive data (think Hot Coffee mod).

How can you have paid for free PSN? You may have bought a ps3 becausse PSN was free, which is certainly better than the alternative, but its sony service. whether or not they charge a fee is 100% entirely up to them, and they can start charging 100 bucks a year if they want. Whether you choose to continue to support them, thats the only place you have any say.
Now the other OS removal is complete bull, seeing as i can see some people actually having bought a system for that purpose

Because it's not, and what they've done here is EXACTLY the same thing on a slightly smaller scale. Just because it has less of an impact, doesn't mean it's justified. Don't overthink this, you'll just end up confusing yourself. The simple truth of the matter is that Sony have misled millions of customers.

I really hate litigation and all that, but I seriously hope somebody sues them over this. They should have to refund the original purchase price to everybody with a phat (and of course they wouldn't want to do that, so they should give in and put the other os back).

Yeah but what if Sony was about to release PS4 and decided to say "we don't want to support PS3 anymore" and they release an update that people think is something good and it turns out it disables their system entirely, forcing you to not be able to play PS3 games? I know that sounds evil, but what do you think would happen?
Reply
it was sold to you to play games and watch blu rays, so must it do. they cant intentionally break it legally just because they own the rights to thier software and wont because what would be the point?

if there was a security problem then its on sony to fix the problem, not take the option away so they just dont have to worry about it
i paid for THAT option as well as many others
PAID is the keyword, if they go back on that AFTER i PAID for it, then they should have to give FULL REFUNDS
as far as buyin a pc if i wanted to use a other os, well it says sony computer of america, and that option was meant to make people believe they could use the ps3 as a pc if they choose to,so it was intentially used to misslead consumers to purchase this spacific product
im pretty sure the other o.s. feature was meant for the computer part of sony computer of america , which is o yea, on the ps3 box!

the MAIN reason i bought a ps3 was FREE ONLINE which they offered as well for life

And I totally agree with Snaku about the whole sueing thing (although probably not possible because we agreed to some stupid terms of use agreement when buying/using our PS3). This is totally unfair to people who own phats. What are they going to do next take out backward compatibility to increase profits on PSN classic titles?

Now this. I haven't used Linux on my ps3 but it was always something I was going to get around to eventually. Right after I decided I had $100 or so to burn to buy a bigger hdd for it (or however much a 500g hdd would cost). It's not like I bought the ps3 BECAUSE it could do linux, but I always liked the idea. And now I can't.
F*** Sony! That's the last freakin' Sony product I ever buy. I hope the ps3 does get hacked: I'll pirate every game from then on just to stick it to them (ok, probably not: I'm betting hacked ps3's will be blocked from psn, and I'm not gonna' give up my lbp).
Is there anything constructive we can do? Whining is great and all, but it's not gonna' bring back other os. A class action suit (or even any lawsuit) would be awesome, and I hope it happens, but I'm not going to be the one to pull the trigger (and foot the bill). Maybe if everybody inundates them with e-mails, they'll reconsider. Any idea where we send the e-mails to?

- On your PS3, sign out of PSN
- Download and install PS3.ProxyServer.GUI here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ywnmy1wykzi
- It doesn't create shortcuts so navigate to C:\Program Files\CF3B5\PS3.ProxyServer and run PS3.ProxyServer.GUI.exe
- Type your current LOCAL IP ADDRESS (probably 192.168.*.*), you can leave the port as 8080, check PS3 Mode
- Whatever port you use must be open on your router, so if 8080 is blocked, open it now
- Go to the Replace Files tab and click Add
- In the left box, paste this address: http://fus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/...
- In the right box, click browse and find your LOCAL COPY of the 3.15 ps3-updatelist.txt file, download from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dyjldy24yod
- Back to the Proxy Settings tab, click Start
- From your PS3's XMB, go to Settings, Network Settings, then Internet Connection Settings
- Keep everything the way you have it configured now except for the Proxy Server option, make sure you click Use
- Type the IP address and port number to your local computer (from step 4 above)
- Finish configuring, test connection, make sure it connects
- That's it. If the connection test works, you can now sign into PSN with 3.15 and bypass the 3.21 firmware check
- Note that you must keep PS3.ProxyServer.GUI running when you want to use your PS3 until we get CFW :)

Stop the Apache server - or What eve server
Use another computer for the PS3.ProxyServer.GUI
I've compiled a installer for this unit. Props are given to the maker.

You wanna know the best thing about all of this? If the PS3 'dies' because of piracy or whatever becomes of this:
GeoHot: I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...
Sony has brought all of this upon themselves. They can point the finger all they want...but in the end, theymade the fatal mistake.
Message to Sony: 3.22 bring back OtherOS lest lose your baby.

You are being too narrow minded. There is nothing stopping games from being able to track your movement with Natal AND use a normal Xbox 360 pad, at the same time. So in fact, it has plenty of buttons.
I think the best games in fact will be the ones that use Natal as an extension of the pad rather than a replacement which is what Fable 3 will do, as you really couldn't play that game entirely without a pad.

I'm not paying out the Move itself, don't get me wrong; I'd love to get one. However I'm not prepared to update. So for the time being it looks like I'm gonna miss out

PS4 Feature list
-----------------
EVERYTHING THE PS3 CAN DO EXCEPT:
- Play PS1, 2 or 3 games
- watch blu-ray movies
- Operating system deal with microsoft to give you unpatched Windows Vista for firmware
- plus laods more great features for twice the launch price of the ps3 in Australia (meaning, $2000)
..at least, that's all I see should Sony keep this shit up. Anyone agree/disagree?

I don't think they made anything else with the 'security'.
Well, if Sony really did that, that means that they red what Geo discovered and, together with their OS knowledge, they saw that unlock could be possible using the otherOS feature. That is why they disabled it or would not have any sense.
That's my opinion.

The Dreamcast was long dead before piracy took hold, everyone was waiting on the PS2. The killer of the Dreamcast was the flop of the Saturn, people lost trust in SEGA.
Ironically Sony are risking the same thing by removing features from the PS3. People are losing trust in them. Nobody in their right mind is going to buy a product that there is a risk will have features removed over its lifetime. You can accept online features being removed over a long period of time, but actual functionality of the box you bought that should "just work" without external influences, unacceptable.
If this has been a kitchen appliance that suddenly had a feature removed we would consider it defective. What would you do if the freezer part of your fridge/freezer suddenly stopped working? Or your Microwave suddenly only worked on Low power? These are features we were sold when we bought the product, we do not expect them to be suddenly taken away from us artificially.

Sony would rather waste time to win in a pissing contest with one person (a young talent)than spend that time "providing" consumers with the features they have been "promising" since the launch of the PS3.
Sony fails to realize that what a consumer does with his/her purchased product is that consumer's business...not Sony's!
What better way to show how small you (Sony) really are?

Will wait for custom firmware. No matter how long it takes. My first 50" tv was supposed to be a flat panel when it came it was rear projection and broke down constantly.I then purchased a 52" tv that was supposed to be 3d ready with a future update and it is not because its true htz is only 50 htz not 100htz that is needed for 3d. But they lied and said it was 100htz when I purchased it. purchased two of your ps3's and three psp systems to now get pissed on Again. Sony can forget my custom again. They are deceiving with what they do and will lie to get you to purchase products. Fact! What happend to playing ps3 games through remote play on psp they did`nt even try. Now they killed ps2 compatability and other OS. Sad sony kill themselves like this. But they have as far as I am concerned.

Don't know if I will get another PS3, I'll stick with my XBOX 360. At least, I still have the features that the XBOX came with.
Not only are removing other OS, but if you don't upgrade to this new firmware, you can't login to PlayStation Live, you lose the ability to play certain games/ Blu-ray, etc.
I smell a class action lawsuit. This is utterly ridiculous. Sony used to be a good company but they are becoming a bad company.

Sony is doing false advertising, this needs to be pointed out to a judge also. Sony claims that the PS3 "It Only Does Everything" which is false advertising espically since they removed PS2 support from the new systems and are now removing OpenOS.

What are you, stupid? No one's pirating anything.. yet. It's basically like opening the screen door of a house, you're kinda in but you need to get the main door unlocked.
I can understand banning pirates, but removing a feature heavily advertised, saying you wouldn't remove it, and giving barely a week's notice? please.

Reply
yours classifies as one such comment.
sony has no right to take away major features from the customer.
Reply
I mean, I kinda doubt that one guy with a half-baked and hitherto unutilized "hack" scared sony into doing something so obviously stupid. But maybe he did.
I also doubt it was a April Fool's joke, but it might be. (Incidentally, was this update worldwide? I didn't see. Did Japan get hit by this too?)
Here's something I just thought of though: Perhaps Sony is removing it to strip out some fluff from the FW to make way for the code for Move? Or perhaps something else in the future? It seems like a ass-backwards way of doing it, but hey, it's Sony. They do ass-backwards stuff. I don't know, but it's frankly as good a theory as the rest of them, as far as we know.
I really just wish Sony communicated with us better. If they gave an explanation as to WHY they do what they do, I would be less angry, if not understanding.

Search for PS3 Proxy Server Gui!!
you'll find plenty of Guides on "ps3news.com"
I have Windows 7 64-bit (x64) Ultimate, and "IT WORKS!" My ps3 just log-in to the PSN and such!
It does work on Windows 7 and you dont have to set it on any compatibility mode. Simply know a lil about routing and such.
Like opening PORTS, bcz I have 2 routers connected one after another and then the modem. So I had to go to my Router (Belkin) and open the port, the port you can pick which ever you want but it must match the one u put on the PS3 and the Proxy Server GUI.
further help or such, email me. or message me
GeoHatz! Your definitely a brilliant mind, for starting a battle with Sony. Cheers my friend. as Well THANKS to the creators of the Ps3 Proxy Server GUI!! For letting us continue under the Homebrew Scene.

-Remove PS2 backwardcompati bility with the PS3s that have that
-Make paid PSN
-Make paid web browser
-Remove the feature of playing Blu Ray movies (so you need to buy a Sony Blu Ray Player)
-Make some kind of mode that when you turn on the console it says that you MUST update it to use it, and by updating you lose all the things named above.
Eventually all that stuff will happen (maybe not the 'remove blu ray player' but all the rest yes). Saying 'fuck Sony' doesn't even represent 0,1% of what people will feel.

I'm by-passing the PS3 Firmware update by using the PS3 Proxy Server GUI.(Computer Application) Basically it makes the PS3 think it has the most up-to-date firmware, thus allowing me to keep linux on the OtherOS and play online and sign in the PSN and such....

Yes the Proxy Server GUI works for WINDOWS 7 64-BIT. I have it running before I read chaoszero post. lolz
Still Keep in mind both options bcz you never know if Sony does something to block that specific DNS. or soemthing

Also contact the US Attorney General at http://www.justice.gov/contact-us.html about what Sony did.
Also contact your senators about this also.
I'm not sure but I believe what Sony has done with the update has never been done before. Sony needs to be made an example of if. If Sony can do this, what's gonna stop other companies from doing the same thing.
Sony could decide to remove the web browser, they could remove the PS2 features on the Phat systems, etc.

What if they are now going to say: Hey, we remove the Music section, because you might have embedded code in an MP3, or the Pictures part, as there might be a TIFF exploit in there....And owww....of course remove the gaming section, as Savegames have been the main culprit on the PSP, soooo, maybe it will also be on the PS3!!
I have several Sony products, however that doesn't say I can not criticize.
I think there will be civil suit and maybe even a corporate lawsuit, because some use the PS3 for science projects or processing.

Face it, none of these will stand up. We all know Sony's ToC statement will proven to be bulletproof. I have not, or never will be intending to install Linux. However, this really isn't the point here is it? The point is a matter of principle. For instance, here's one for those drivers out there:
All of you have ready access to whatever brake-Horsepower your car currently commands. You may not ever USE it, but you have it, it's advertised, and you may be proud of it. Now, it goes in for it's MOT. When it emerges, you get happily informed that it now has 100bHP LESS than it did before. The alternative would be that you would be unable to drive the car lawfully on public roads.
Will it impede your driving at all? No, of course it won't. Would you accept this situation? No, of course you won't. Would lawyers be involved at some point? Yes!
Here is a clear parallel with this PS3 situation. What will happen? Nothing!

Uh,
People have contacted their state attorney generals and have been told that they do have a case.
What Sony did according to the attorney generals is bait and switching, plain and simple and in that case, the TOS and EULA would be invalidated.
Doesn't matter what the EULA/TOS says, consumer laws over-ride them.

Sony is panicking. They obviously found a major hole through the otherOS and is removing it to protect their precious system, at the expense of their early adopters? No, thats plain wrong. Imagine how the launch PS4 will sell knowing that it will lose features in the future. Dumb@ss move $ony.
Geohot, finish $ony off quickly. Give 'em the CFW bullet. Maybe then when they respawn they'll think clearly again....

If you want to keep Other OS, just don't update, and buy a slim to be used as an updated console. But wait...We have PC's! That run emulators better than a PS3! so i dont see the point in complaining about another removed feature thats not even necessary anyway. But on the other hand. Sony has a reputation of removing features. I saw this coming. And whatever they decide to move next....I don't care! I'm still gonna use my PS3 until Next gen is released. All I have to say to Sony is Good Move! I wouldve done the same. So go ahead, try to hack it another way(which is doubtful) cause that will be patched also. I support Sony for having the balls to do this.

PLEASE READ and consider, I’m trying to reach out here.
If you refuse to improve security, and shake things up, rather than taking out OS, consider this. Make PSN, and ALL future games compatible with 3.15. THEN, *stay with me*, have people give up OtherOS by offering features they DO want. Most everyone is already on 3.21, offer those refusing on principal something they want, you have a list on your Share Blog. People want new features, and 99.5% will upgrade for these things. To get the new features you MUST upgrade. So since most everyone wants these, you get everybody but honest Linux users, and maybe a small handful of hardcore hackers to give up the OtherOS. See how that works, you can use carrots to close up your hole for the most part, and still not punish honest linux users and programmers. I honestly think this would solve enough of your problem to make it a nil issue. It would get people like me off of your back. I will even let you at Sony take the credit for the idea. And its a start to repairing your image in my eyes.
So nobody responds to me at Sony to talk like adults, so I filed with the FTC, BBB, and there is word that a class action is getting together and should be more news this week. I REALLY don't want to fight PlayStation, I LOVE the brand. But unless they can at least let me play online with my friends on PSN, and continue to BUY new games and support the studios I love, than we are at a disagreement. I don't care that I can't upgrade to new firmware to get new features, that will be the price I pay, I will still at least get to keep what I paid for. My idea is a last ditch effort, I don't want to see piracy crush the studios I love and admire either. So I offer this as an alternative to Sony before it gets even uglier. For this I get banned on the blogs twice. This is the kind of company we are dealing with, and if you have a fat PS3 I urge you to stand up for yourselves, post on the blogs, email and call them, file with FTC etc.

To all still on 3.15, you may update your PS3 as the CFW will work from 3.21 as well.
Its taking a bit more time than I expected so I advise you update and I promise it will include 3.21 support"
Interesting if true.
