PS3 firmware update

You guys may already have heard about the latest PS3 firmware update from Sony, as we have reported about it earlier. Unfortunately until now, the officials PlayStation site hasn't been updated regarding v1.31's brand-spanking features, so details about it are still scarce.

HOWEVER, we got wind of Siliconera's article, which hints on a probable backwards compatibility feature with the bumped-up firmware. You see, along with v1.31, the PS2 game Nobunaga no Yabou Online: Haten no Shou has been released in Japanese shores as well. Just like Final Fantasy XI, the said PS2 game needs a hard drive add on which according to Siliconera, is something that Sony has been "reluctant to back up".

Interestingly, the latest firmware update is compatible with hard drive requiring games for the PS2. Hmmm... sounds a little like backwards compatibility for me? What do you guys think? Click on "Comments" and let us know...

» HDLoader

Should be interesting to see if HDLoader would work since the HD PS2 System Files are now present. If it doesn't, it sure seems like a little tweaking should solve it.

» Firmware Update

What the PS3 desperately needs (despite one of my previous posts) is to fix the issues it's having with poor image quality in PS1 and PS2 games. I'd imagine it'd be a relatively quick and easy fix, but I've been wrong before.

Still, a little Anti-aliasing and A-filtering wouldn't hurt, either. It does wonders for PS1 emulation ;)

» ye

us HDLoader guys over at PS2hd.com and HDLoader.net/forums, have been wondering about this ever since PS3's launch, yet no one has tried to verify anything.

» finally?

that all depends on your level of audio/video appreciation, for example the last PS3 firmware update allowed for SACD at up to170Khz sampling frequency, and an alternative to RGB colour.

» FFXI

can anyone verify if the update allows the HDD games to be played? Im going to download the update now and we'll see.

» HDD

Ok, after the update if you insert a HDD title it asks you if you wish to create a partition for HDD titles saying the process will take 10 mins. Right now though, after selecting yes, it tells you to go to [playstation store] and download [PS2 system data].

Right now there is nothing on the Playstation Store that says PS2 System data so i guess ill play the waiting game.

I'm a very impatient person..

so what I did, most cleverly might I add,

was create a Playstation network Account for Japan.

and then I downloaded the PS2 system data file form the japanese playstation store :]

you don't have to enter any billing info when creating the account,

you just need a valid residential address from japan.

A suggestion for you....

look one up on google..

and then go through the registration process in english, so when you try it in japanese, it won't be so confusing...

unless you can read japanese.

haha

then once you register, go to the playstation store, and click on the second tab, it should contain The Genji Demo, and the PS2 System data :]

It worked perfectly for me!

It took FOREVER to install and update PLayOnline and FFXI

but oh well

:]

so...

create a new user,

i left it as "User 1"

and then go over to network > sign up for playstation network.

after you're done registering and downloading the file,

simply delete "user 1"

and you're all set!

P.s. don't worry about ANY of the info you use to create the japanese account,

the only thing that matters is a valid address,

and make sure the email looks like an email

but nothing else has to be valid..

i typed "hahahahahaha" for almost everything except for my password and sign in.

:]

good luck, and let me know how it goes!!

» Backwards Compatibility

PS3 backward compatibility isn't as good as it was made out to be. A lot of games work, but look worse than the PS2. The only reason so many games work is the rendering chip from the slim PS2 is inside. If sony wants to make older games HD, they need to do it in software as in the XBOX 360. Then they will have the same difficulties as Microsoft did and fewer games will work. They're supposedly going to remove the PS2 chip when the BC is good enough but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

» you seem to be lost

This is about HDD using games on the PS2 now working on the PS3. There is a whole nother news thread if you want to talk about how the PS2 games look bad on PS3.

» ywea i

i tried it with my ps3 using hdadvance but it said you are using a ps2 that is not supported go to www.hdadvance.com but now since the file system is there...

i dont know havent updated to 1.31 and i really dont plan to

» Common Sense goes where Common Sense decides

My point is it's easy to add HDD support, but hard to emulate the games with software. I doubt sony will give you much improvment for BC. Isn't there like 3 games that support the HD anyway? The PS2 hard drive was a perfect example of sony releasing an add on way late and offering next to nothing that utilizes it. Then they really made it useless by making the new slim PS2 without HDD support.

» It was abandoned

Even though Sony abandoned this people still use the PS2 HDD quite a bit. Almost all of them are used on FFXI, but it's still a lot of people. So the PS2 HDD wasn't a complete failure.

» PS# & FFXI

I am thinking on buying FFXI for PS to install on my PS3. My hope is that my girlfriend can play on that while I play the same game on my PC simultaneously. Reading threads it seems that there may be a problem with backward compatibility and graphics. Would anybody be able to help me to determine if I can buy the PS2 FF game and play it on my PS3? If so, what are the complications (if any). Would like to know this before I fork out money for a game I might not be able to play.
