PS3 firmware update v3.10 incoming, previewed

Heads up to all PlayStation 3 owners! Sony has just revealed some more details about the upcoming PS3 firmware update version 3.10 which is scheduled to arrive "soon". The latest update will incorporate Facebook functionality into the console. According to PlayStation Network director of operations, Eric Lempel:

The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3Â’s built-in web browser.

But wait, there's more! According to Lempel, this is just the beginning of Facebook integration into the PS3. You can look forward for new features in the future updates. Other highlights in the update includes:

The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

But unfortunately, it seems like the most anticipated cross-game chat feature is still nowhere to be found.

More "Automated" facebook integration with no personality at all. I have yet to see 1 Automated post made to my facebook account from anything get a comment or Like from friends, nor to I comment or like on there's because, well who cares. I remember when facebook and twitter actually let you share your personality, not automated responses. Lame.

Everyone sounds like Xbox crybabies in here. Facebook is great and many people use it. The ability to post your trophy progression on facebook is fantastic. I myself have almost 3,000 trophies and I would like to show off the new ones I get to my friends on facebook. Every update only improves the PS3. Sorry it is not what everyone wants but it makes the PS3 better than it was yesterday. So suck it up you Nancy boys.

From the video it looks like the completely fading text has been changed to almost completely fading text, that is so freaking awesome. It was so annoying when I was trying to find a specific song, stop for a second, and the text would disappear.

Cross Game Chat is in the works but it just takes too much time to get it right. MS had like 3 years to work on it when Xbox 1 came out.

The amount of coding involved to get it to work on the PS3 XMB is not easy and simple. Is very complex and challenging. I do believe Eric Lempel stated this many times already and people still don't understand. *sigh*

Ultimately most updates arnt amazing, I know many people are simply glad to have the friends list changed... isnt that good enough for the facebook haters?

I can see where a lot of people are coming from, personally i wouldnt care if any of my friends, girlfriend, wife, etc got a trophy or bought a game... Im sure many others could care less... one of the downsides to trophies for instances *same for achievements* they dont also show how hard a trophy is to obtain...

SF IV beat it on hardest is one of the easiest trophies i can think of, that sounds hard... where as beat the prinny pirates is by far one of the most annoying/hardest trophies i can think of that doesnt seem/look hard due to this a lot of people wwont care

those these are fluff features, you have to remember they also have to work on getting the ps3 better than the xbox, which if the xbox has a popular feature *no matter how useless* that the ps3 lacks they will use it to be better, so i can understand their stance...

finally on cross chat, its coming... but you cant be mad every time we dont get it, didnt they say 3.0 was the last major update this year?

I think you will find that there are a substantial number gamers especially from the EU who are not to happy with the way that they are treated in relation to other gamers from other continents. You could try to justify it in relation to regional issues but at the end of the day one thing sony could do is plan a global release (game developers seem to do this just fine). Again just because you don't give "a flying turd" doesn't mean that everybody else doesn't.

Sony is giving these updates for FREE. Xbox users have to PAY for the same features we get for free. You think 360's facebook and Twitter will be better? Think again. It's a f*cking web page! At least you know your money flows into the "cool" features, right?

Also, to address his new half brained idea...slapping someone else's code into your own code is a major NO NO when it comes to stability.

Lets say they update their server side stuff, now the client that every PS3 has is no good or it breaks something. It's not their code to fix.

Also they already have a voice chat system that works. Unless they made some extremely poor design decisions there is no reason cross-game chat shouldn't be possible with very minimal modifications. If they did something stupid when designing the system then obviously it's going to be harder to implement but I have a feeling it's more of a fiscal reason (i.e. they can charge game developers extra for using voice chat if it's part of the game instead of a feature of the PSN.)

P.S. ISOHaven, just because you play video games doesn't mean you are a programming/network engineer. I'm sick of every gamer thinking they're experts in all things technological.

List of things they need to fix:

1. Font size.

2. Text fading in lists.

3. Get rid of the ticker.

4. Get rid of the extra PS Store icons.

At no point did I say "Yes, the features added in 3.xx are usefull. In fact they're so useful I don't mind the annoyances that are added." Unfortunately we are required to be logged into the PSN to play games online so I didn't really have a choice but to upgrade unless I wanted to stop using part of my games that I already paid for.

And before people say "PSN IZ FREE," that's irrelevant, I don't want PSN and I don't want updates. I don't use the PS Store, nor do I use the chat/friends list, nor do I care about trophies, nor do I care about the Facebook ***** they add. So why am I required to join a "free" service to use something I already paid for, when I don't even want what the service provides? PSN is NOT free because it requires me to give up control of my hardware if I want to use games that I own on an internet connection that I already pay for. Obviously game compatibility updates and bug fixes are needed but that's a cost Sony and game developers should front, which they will recover in sales.

anyway, my point was that because the technology already exist, in the form of ventrilo, then sony would have to code from scratch. now i dont know how long ventrilo was in production for, and i dont know anything about programming, but i kind of figure that creating code and making sure that it doesn't "steal" from other developers can be difficult. not to mention that it's got to be perfect in that there are no bugs and/or security issues that might threaten the millions of their users...

TeamSpeak and Ventrilo are programs that run ALONGSIDE PC games that allow you to chat with people while you play. They don't require you to be in the same game or even on the same network.

They're cross-game chat applications. All Sony has to do is LICENSE ONE and BUILD A UI.

Like they JUST DID with Facebook.

It'd be f*cking DONE already.

Now, another thing that you mention is that you WANT to "PAY" for online? wow, that's an ass backwards way to start now after all this time you've had PSN..I mean I started on LIVE and paid for service for about 1 1/2 years, then for personal reasons I had to get another console, so it was either the Wii or PS3... got the ps3 and haven't looked back ever since..

Start off with RFOM, then try out the sequel.

Next try out Uncharted along with the sequel as well.

All the Ratchet and Clank games.

Killzone2, and if you don't like FPS, then go with something like Infamous, or LBP ...

He clearly states that he wants to use the INTERNET with his games. There is ONLY ONE WAY to do that. Through PSN.

What PS3 game do you own that uses a web browser as part of the game?

Internet enabled games are all linked via some sort of PSN service. Same with XBL.

His "demands" are unwarranted.

I think the major problem here is that both of you are idiots and have no clue as to what you are talking about.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO PSN requirement for owning a PS3.

You can buy a PS3. Plug it into a power outlet AND NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER plug it into the internet either via ethernet or wireless.

You can play MOST PS3 games without ever having to even have a PSN account.

So I turn this around back to you. What part of that DO YOU not understand?

If you want to play PSN enabled games online then DUH!!!! You need a PSN account.

Playing a game online IS THE VERY FOUNDATION of using PSN.

Seems to me, both of you need to go get a damn PC.

My biggest problem with this update, is that before, while listening to music, you cold press the PS button to browse and highlight another song to change to when the current one ends, but they removed it and now all it does is bring a message saying "Do you want to quit playback?"

WHY??
