PS3 firmware cracked by hackers |

The PS3 is holding well on its own against piracy, but the battle is still ongoing. Just as with any game consoles, hackers are working their way to mod the machine. So far, firmware versions 1.10 and 1.11 have been cracked to allow booting copies of PS3 games. This is just a baby step, since the copied games only boot but don't play. Homebrew games won't run too, which is quite a pain. It already goes without saying that tinkering with your unit also takes away warranty. If you ever plan on playing with your firmware, consider the consequences.
Modded Xbox 360s and Wiis are already out in some pirate markets, allowing boot-leggers to play burned games. How long 'til the PS3 falls? Its predecessors didn't last much before illegal copies became playable.

if you have other priorities in life that shelling out $60 for a game is not practical then don't get a console and just work on ur priorities...
i have never taken up a hobby, a sport, or any other recreation that i can't afford... that's why it's a luxury and not a necessity...

1) 99% of hackers do it for the challenge
2) just because it was "hacked" means everyone under the sun can do it
3) BD burners are 0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106037
which is less that a ps3, and by the end of the year will prolly be less than 0
4) to the little fanboi talking about 360, first its made by M$ and second you are an idiot. kthxbi
Quixand and Tails4u2nv keep up the good work.

Remeber the "hack into the PS3 thru the web" contest that NOBODY won? PS3 is unhackable. Besides, if you can boot up the game but not play it, then it didn't boot! It's not hacked at all.
No gamesharks, codebreakers, or ARMAX's. That's proof enough.

It's immoral, wrong, and illegal...but it's possible.

Remember fw 1.5 on psp? Better yet, 2.0. I saw at least 3 articles hailing it as "unhackable!"
PS3 will be MUCH harder to hack than psp firmwares, because sony has that experience, so I can imagine PS3 is roughly as secure as the latest PSP firmware now.

The point is, sony desperately needs that money, and if the console is pirated that could spell disaster for sony. Since quixand is a sony employee and fights for them to the death, (which will come soon) he is animately against piracy.

I'm glad blu ray is around 50gb so it's not cost effective for pirates :)

about this hacking thing, where are those paradox geniuses that spoke out loud to the world that they have a working ISO loader for PS3, did they get greedy and just pirate the ps3 themselves or was it just vaporware and complete boast?

Honestly, for the past few years I have stopped using my PS2 for such a long time...until I found an mc exploit and Im so happy that PS2 can do more things. No need to burn anything, and my friend lends my a copies of his games and install it on the harddrive...Gta runs so smooth on it...I also have download torrents and yes it works as well. I run homebrew apps that can play streaming divx/mp4 videos from the harddrive or on my network. In conclusion, the amount of money I spent on it back in 2000 now has worth value for me to use and not just to collect dust...
With this PS3 issue, I give props to those guys that really try hard. Even though I'm not planning to buy it soon but the amount of things you can do with it is way more than the PS2.
Just my opinion...

Just because a console doesn't have a gameshark or anything doesn't mean its unhackable.

lol@mrtoasty
i agree that the ps3 is not 'unhackable'
but to say.. 'roughly as secure as the latest psp firmware' lol

Just like the psp where you went from umd proprietary to iso's on a mem stick, blu-ray can go proprietary to network transferable. It's all about the coding guys.
Verizon Fios + newsgroups + highly hacked firmware = fast downloading, easy transferable blu-ray games.

If there is a lock there is a Key! everything is with its time... so in a few months from now... U will be with your mouth opened and thinking how dumb u sounded when u said it was unhackable!
And By the way... u ppl talking about its not affordable have u guyz notice that all new pc's or most of them come with a blueray recorders? U kids think u are big computer knowledge dudes and u only play games... don't even look at the big picture... look around ya and stop playing just games.
And here for all you piracy lovers... China is number one in the black list for piracy .. ya know why? because china don't pirate like u wankers that stay home jerking off and play games all day long... and burn discs . they actually have fabrics like the retail one that copy their games! I live in china and i buy my X360,Ps2 U name it games ... for less than 1 Us buck and nicer than the real one!
When the Ps3 is hacked for real (cause all that iso loader mambo jumbo is just a bunch of bull if there was one it would be out for a long time!... ) there will be PS3 games all over the place to buy! cause there will be a fabric producing Bluray discs!
And this is for you retailers... stop selling games so *****ing expensive and piracy will stop being like it is... Makes no *****ing sense paying 50bucks for a game...

2) They are oblivious (or choose to turn a blind eye) to the stealing done by other companies, namely Microsoft - their favourite company; which could do no wrong... (yet it "steals" just as much, or MORE than Sony) I don't wish to go into examples of what MS has stolen over the years but one thing that started off as "stolen" ideas has a name starting with Win and ending with dows.

Though nothing can be hacker proof, I do believe this will be difficult to completely hack. They have a bit of experience with the PSP firmwares, but of course, this is a PS3, and is not the same thing. As for the ones saying that they can keep updating the firmwares and have games require the most up to date firmwares, think about the PSP. Once a firmware is cracked, people create custom firmwares that can be installed which hold the identity of the most recent firmwares, and at the same time, holds all the flaws of the cracked firmware. Updating firmware will not help stop it from being "hacked".
And yes, PS3 games may be large files to download, but that is why we have torrents. On good torrents, I get about 5-10GB of data downloaded a day. Within a few days, you can have your game downloaded. Its really not a problem. Transporting the file may be an issue though, im sure it can be done through a network, PC-PS3, or maybe you can just buy a external hard drive for your PS3. When it is able to run homebrew, that opens doors to compatability. Transportation of these big files is possible, its just a matter of time till the best method is revealed.

PS3 needs hacking more than any of the others, the game quality so far doesnt justify paying £50 each.

Just buy a 500gb harddrive that you bring to someone you know who has a BR burner and burn some RW disks @ his place.
Total cost ~150USD and then you will always have 5new games to play :)
backups of course *cough*

But for the USA, 50-60 dollars for a next gen game is not expensive. If you do some real research, instead of ***** about the price, you find out that game companies make about a dollar per game during it's release. It takes money, lots of it, to develop for a new console. If a game is expensive, just don't buy it; the prices will drop sometime in the future. There is no excuse for piracy.

The issue on blu-ray games being pirated is not how big the file size the game contains today but how big it will be when the better games come out.
Homebrew on the ps3 can also be done with linux and is more legal. The only problem is sony is trying to limit the use of the ps3's power on linux so it will not create a hole for hackers to get through.
I know hacking is great but in a positive way to use the console's potential but it destroys the quality of games developed. .. I mean who would want to spend more creating better games if they know they will not gain enough profit? It's just common sense..
I hope I haven't offended anyone, and if I did, I just saying my thoughts....

I would like to see a better Web browser, better media organization, E-Mail capabilities, and maybe be able to copy my PS1/PSP games (legal copies of course), allowing XMB compatible media players like XBMC. (XMB is sweet, but it's difficult to find what you want, when you want it)
Firmware hacks are going to be something I keep a close eye on, because Sony is seriously lacking when it comes to a 100% overall media center.
