PS3 firmware 3.30 incoming UPDATE

Head's up to all PS3 owners, Sony has announced that a new software update for the PlayStation 3 will be available shortly. According to PlayStation Network director of operations, Eric Lempel:

"We’ll be adding a few new features to PlayStation 3 (PS3) via the latest system software update, which is a mandatory update and will be available shortly. Most notably, you’ll see some new sorting options within Trophies that make it easier to claim bragging rights among your friends on PlayStation Network."

Trophy enhancements –- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]
- Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
- Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
- Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

"In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA TVs."

Come on Sony! Where is Cross Game Chat with a Longer friends and Ban list as well as More Support for IN GAME MUSIC!..The Xbox360 has this and I want it in all my games ASAP! I am deleting "friends" off my virtual friends list who haven't been on in ages or who don't play the same games as me/even bother to talk to me once in a while, maybe you need a spring clean up not a longer friends list, I highly doubt you play with your entire friends list at once anyways.

You can ban people from talking to you, just you don't get cluttered with their name after you do it, you banned them, wtf do you care?

In game Music... that's a hard one, the reason Xbox can pull this off is because they have the DirectAudioLaye r, basically all games play on a common channel designated solely to music. Since the PS3 doesn't support DirectX, you get a mash of sound libraries in games and they use different channels for different things. Plus the PS3 isn't that great at streaming, if you understood hardware you'd know this. basically everything that you wish to transfer to the SPU's has to be crammed together into the registers, then transferred in a chunk (super dumbed down version), so now the game is no longer loading the audio, the firmware is, and it has no idea what channel to mute so that your music will play, and yea, just look at Super Stardust and the random load times based on the quality of the MP3 you are playing in the background, and to do the same in a large (AAA) game that's already streaming from the blu-ray and hdd as fast as it can, is going to have more than just some long load times.

Cross Game Chat... pick up a phone, who the hell are you chatting with "dude I got a puppy" "STFU I'm trying to play MW2, your puppy is gonna die if you talking about it"

* Flash for internet browser has been updated.
* issues with some region-free BD mvoies has been fixed. (such as the BBC’s Life)
* new BD Audio Output setting under Video Settings: [(Direct)] and [Bitstream (Mix)] have been added for optical output.

No, he is right. OtherOS is pretty useless, since you don't have GPU support. If you really want Linux, get a PC. If you want a media center, the PS3 OS pretty much offers everything you need. You can't do much more with an OtherOS media center anyway.

You're mostly right. It's PRETYY useless, but not completely. I always intended to install it once I got around to getting a bigger hdd. I figured if nothing else, I could use it to rip Blu-ray movies so I could convert them to run on my psp. I realize that's a quasi-illegal use and Sony would have no sympathy with me on that one... but then I have no sympathy with them on the "security issues" that linux caused.

I also figured that a web browser on Linux would probably work better than the xmb's browser (I never did check though, so I might be wrong) and I liked the idea of browsing the web on my tv.

Sign in with two PSN IDs when playing a multiplayer game. For instance CoD:MW2, when you play Split Screen, you have an option to sign in, but the 2nd 3rd and 4th players must use a Guest sign in. Why not make it so multiple users can sign in with their PSN ID.

yep. happened to me finally. my 60 gig got ylod'd on monday, then yesterday my Bc 80 gb did the same. how in the f**? two consoles in two days? they were both on 3.15 and i wasn't planning on updating either. The issue here is not about the OS only, Sony is removing stuff the system originally had. If you haven't noticed yet we're losing more and more features: PS2 compatibilitly, SACD, card reader, USB ports and Linux. Anyone would rage, it's only natural.

PS2 compatibility, SACD, card reader, USB ports have all been HARDWARE removals. These aren't just software switches you can turn on or off. If Sony haven't removed these hardware parts, you would be still paying 600 bcuks for the PS3.

The only point you have is OtherOS, a useless feature which about 0.0001% of all owners used. But you have to to click "Yes, I want to install the update" THREE times, before you really loose OtherOS, and nobody forces you to upgrade.

I wan't comparing removing features from removing hardware. I just pointed out that Kuroyas point was pretty much BS, because hardware has been removed, which CAN'T BE ENABLED BY SOFTWARE.

removing Linux is a completetly different matter, as it is software, and therefore bringing in SACD, PS2 compatibility, USB ports and card reader was completely unnecessary.

Sure, the removal of Linux was hard for the 3 people who used it, but what would do if you were Sony? Everyone, especially YOU FREEPLAY, have seen what happened to the PSP after piracy went mainstream. If you want that the same happens with PS3, then go ahead and help Geohot, but I doubt you will get far on your own.

My point still applies, hardware was removed but the price was adjusted for that. It's not like they charge $600 for the slim. So trying to justify the the removal of otheros using the hardware changes as a reference point is not valid.

Also trying to [lazily]assume the number of people who used the otheros feature as a way to justify it's removal is not valid either.

About the PSP it's not a secret that most of the games were not good and dev support was poor, and that was before cfw arrived not a result from it. the main use of most people for the CFW on the PSP was not actually to pirate games but to use homebrews and ironically the PSP became the best portable game platform for non PSP games.

Well yes we do have GeoHot but DAX is MIA, and has been for a very long time. I admit if Dark Alex came back it would be INSANE!!! but there have been so many people asking and begging for his return to no avail. Plus Alek the webmaster for Sceners.org and Dark-Alex.org has also gone missing. The only place i've found Dark Alex was on Facebook and it looks like he don't even post. It's just a bunch of people asking for new psp CFW.

I can understand what most of you guys are saying about the OS feature I dont use linux on my PS3 I tried it out a couple of times and well its not all that great but its a feature that I paid for I wont use the feature maybe no more in my life of having the PS3 but the possibilities for CFW is at a good stand point for the PS3 and I am sure when someone does unlock the hidden features of the system most of you on here talking shit will be somewhere looking in Gamespot, Ebay, and Craigslist looking for PS3 with other OS feature to use the great things that CFW brings so its just going to take some time to do but it will happen.....staying on 3.15 forever!!!!

It is not that they removed trophy sorting or something small.. they removed a major feature an entire different way to use the console .. a way that they have promoted and sold the console with. I think this is not ok and maybe even illegal.. I payed for the product that among other things had this feature..
Some think it is an important feature others don't .. but the point is much more principal than that.. to what extend some software or hardware vendor (in this case the two things mix) can decide to "adjust" the product remove features or in other ways change what have been sold and announced. Probably some legal experts should take a look at this principal case..

Why does everything has to be in 3D? Nobody likes the idea of having to wear glasses to play games. And even if they find a solution, most gamers who bought HDTVs before this whole 3D crap will be left out. Kinda sad considering that the HDTV I bought for my PS3 will become useless once developers decide to make 3D exclusive games like nintendo did with the DSi

The best at this is Apple. They convinced people that buying exspensive DRM filled music is a good thing. (Itunes) I know people that only buy itunes music. Tell them they can get the same song cheaper and DRM free at Amazon, they seem confused.
Besides do you care what you look like when you play a video game? I often play in my underwear, and I'm supposed to be embarrased to wear glasses in my own home. Admit it you hate 3D cause you can't afford it. Would you be sayibg how stupid it it if it were free? Doubt it.
Lastly Iso was exactly right a few commemts up, someone needed to say it.

lol yeah Apple's DRM policies are very charming.

I'm not gonna speak up for Sak, I'm gonna give my own opninion on 3-D. I personally don't hate "the concept" of 3-D(who doesn't want 3-D?). but they failed in the execution on the 80's, and on the 90's, and in "my opinion" they will fail again. Why?

1. there's no unified standard: that means diferent companies will develop different technologies for Stereoscopic 3-D and in the end the customer will end up being confused and will give it up. To the "tech geeks" this lack of unification means that they will understand that nobody is doing a serious effort to bring 3-D technology to them and that it is more about monetary pursuit.

2. rehashing old technology: most of the 3-D tech that they are trying to bring out have been around since the birth of 3-D itself. A serious attempt would be to develop totally new tech with a unified standard to back it up.

I think 3-D will find primary success in the cinemas but not in the home audience. Will I like it if it was for free? as it is now, not. In summary, the lack of a unified standard and new tech will most probably make it fail, like it has done before. Of course that's my opinion, I'm not saying that it is a fact.

did anyone else get an email at about 6:43am this morening about psn account policy changes from sony to take effect yesterday?

The way sony has been treating me tempts me something fierce to leave my ps3 (pre removal non psn firmware) a linux box.

Did anyone realise they changed the TOS? Now they can update without your permission when you sign in to PSN. Friggin as*holes, I didn't realise till after I updated. I could cope with the linux removal, but this, just takes the pis*

that update without our permission is not from now, there was a reference to that in 2009. They just made it easier to find so they can cover themselves better if somebody decides to sue.

Yeah they took away the other OS feature but they have added features since the launch of the system so I don't see why everyone is in panic mode. I remember when the PS3 couldn't even download files in the background. I also remember when the PS3 couldn't play divx files or access the XMB, in game. I used the other OS feature for about five days and realized I had a laptop that is ten times more effective. Plus the OS ate up ten gigs of the HDD.

Im pretty sure having linux handy is good for future to make back-ups of your games.. and people would have all the reason to be pissed despite eula, and should be able to uninstall back to the previous option, again, they can modify theyre software but when they originally gave HARDWARE to in Software such as linux, they are messing with people computers as they bought not just the entertainment software which allows you to play ps3.. 1 question..once you install this is there anyway to return to original system even if it means backing up files first.. does the restore feature do this??restore to original software in which you could run linux??

Yes gunbehindthesun , i too think they should get a better web browser i cant write or read emails same with facebook, just sign in thats all and check around home page..the only good thing surpised to work is youtube videos.. and as for the new update... if you chose to restore and format the system will you not get the install other os back?if you could those that swapped a larger hard-drive in, i just keep the origin harddrive and use one for the newer update and try to find an extra cradle so that your not screwing stuff back and forth? no any idea's on this here??? what you think?? good idea?? does that work..too much work??

A few things, pretty sure investing in a second hard-drive would be good but if i choose system restore,back up data prior would that returnfactory settings which include the install other os, install other os, it does not imbed into the system or hard-disk, the update that is?? Haven't tried that yet but also have not yet update past april 1..

These updates are installed to the hard-drive right? does the ps3 not have the original factory settings which inlcude the install other os?? instead of getting 2 systems one with old update and 1 with new to enable psn..id rather just through my old 60gb hard-drive in format. oh and get another hard-drive cradle cuz screwin it back and forth together would suck..
