More details regarding PS3 Firmware 3.0 have surfaced courtesy of Sony's PSN operations director, Eric Lempel. No date yet, but here's a rundown of what you'll be getting when you update to this particular firmware version. Oh, and be sure to check out the video further down for a more in-depth preview of the new firmware.
  • “WhatÂ’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “WhatÂ’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “WhatÂ’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
  • Status Indicator – In the top right corner weÂ’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
  • Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friendsÂ’ respective profiles.
  • PlayStation Store Shortcuts – WeÂ’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
  • Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
  • Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

A lot of nice changes in there. Quite a few of them I've actually though about before and hoped they'd do.

Animated themes and new avatars = WIN

Free and Premium avatars though? What would be premium ones? Still want to be able to at least take a close up picture of my Home avatar guy or LBP Sackboy to use as a unique avatar.

Looks really nice except one thing, the added PlayStation Store icons. Not really liking that. It’s gonna clutter up the XMB, really hope their removable. I know how to get to the PlayStation Store just fine, I really don’t want extra links to anything, especially that.

wut?

When did Sony ever mention cross game chat? You wanting it makes no difference in what Sony chooses what comes out on the updates.

PS Home Community Manager CydoniaX has revealed that several features are in development that a lot of PS3 owners have been clamoring for, particularly cross-game chat and voice messaging.

The reveal was given in a discussion thread in the PlayStation blog where one user gave the following comment:

When are we getting game launching abilities for every multiplayer game in the PS3 library? Why is it that the most basic of features for both the XMB and HOME get prioritized and delivered before all the extra stuff?

1) XMB - Voice Chat across games

2) XMB - Voice messaging(30 sec clip)

3) HOME - Game Launching for all games

CydoniaX replied:

All that stuff is still in development, game launching started with Warhawk and should be supported by all future game spaces now. It takes time, but we haven%u2019t forgotten about all the stuff that our users really want!

Now don't go all excited - Sony's got a lot on their plate right now and we likely won't see these features for some time yet., though I'm hoping I'm wrong on that point. At any rate, at least we know these features are in the works.

Home avatar will probably come one day. And someday they'll probably release moving and 3D avatars(hopeful ly) like in the PS2 save files.

The animated themes are badass though they're probably going to charge us for some of them. Imagine a porn theme. Lol.

That's nice to know.

Though why can't he just wait without the complaining ? It's not helping anyone and it's *****ing annoying.

by jackstraw419 - 2009-08-18 07:37
Cross game chat

Would be nice. Even xbox (the original one) had that.

by Boner_Ville - 2009-08-18 07:38

First of all i didn't know that asking questions was complaining, and complaining about others complaining is the same *****.

also, there were a lot of rumors that 3.0 would have cross game chat, i am very interested in how sony will integrate cross game chat when its patented by microsoft... so next time you open your mouth to talk make sure you know what you're saying

by chessboxer - 2009-08-18 13:18
The only thing

is that the rumours of cross game chat being in 3.0 weren't started by Sony.

If cross game chat is patented (like custom music), it will only be the way that cross game chat is implemented (like the was custom music is pantented).

If the entire idea was not possible, Sony would have said why it hasn't appeared yet and they certainly wouldn't be working on it because MS's lawyers would be kicking down the doors.

looks very nice..

still no specific sections for demos & full games downloaded from the ps store.. but i still like it especially the new themes..

by FelisCatusLover - 2009-08-18 14:56
...

There are sections in the PS Store for both of them, Demos and Games.

by ValiX - 2009-08-18 16:46
Animated Themes - Yay!

I wonder if they'll do a Sackboy theme? Think about it:

Something that looks no different to the stock XMB, but there is a little Sackperson running around the bottom. When you leave the PS3 idle... he might knock on the screen and do his sad face.

That would be pretty sweet imo.

by NathanDrake - 2009-08-18 20:19
...

Think he meant directories on the actual XMB. We can't sort games as well as we can music and video. I'd like to have seperate folders for demos and full games or even genres.

by FelisCatusLover - 2009-08-19 05:47
...

You can make folders on the XMB and name them Demos, full games, etc.

by NathanDrake - 2009-08-19 08:16
...

Maybe but it's not exactly obvious. Took me ages to figure out how to even put things like mp3s into the same folder. It's a really odd and unintuitive method.

by cheeze6661 - 2009-08-26 05:44
well...

as usual... Sony releases a firmware that doesn't have much to offer... (before you comment I have a ps3 and 360) The only feature that I actually like was the dynamic themes. Seem interesting. As for the adding of a sh*t load of psn store shortcuts and the redesign of the info board... Not as much wanted or needed.(sorry Sony)

I'll still be waiting for that awesome a$$ update to come out with features that we actually will use. :(
