Meanwhile, The Examiner takes it further by predicting that the Firmware will be released as soon as tomorrow, identifying it as a basic update. It is said that while there will be no new additions to be made available, there will be a few fixes directed at increasing performance suc as in having faster Trophy synchronization and faster XMB loads.
Speculation also runs that it might introduce the messaging and game invite system, but again, this is not a hundred percent certain.

2.80 is up now. Wtf?

Yep, it's out. I have updated and am now on 2.80. I cant tell if there is any new features, i didn't get a splash screen during update that were new features. It does seem that i can access my XMB from fallout3 (this is the only game i have gone to XMB from) faster and that it (in game XMB) is less jumpy.

I I was bored so I clicked update, and I managed to download one. Nothing new and I need to find a game that I one with trophies in order to test the trophy thing that they "allegedly" fixed
I still don't know what this update contains. hopefully a changelog will be available soon.
I am just pissed off ever since TAZ stops working with 2.7 If it works again, great! If it doesn't... expected. There is only one way to find though ;)
and to my surprise it works again! I just played Kill Zone 2 with my keyboard and mouse again after 3 months...
Yep, 2.80 can be downloaded by selecting System Update/Update via Internet. 2.80 sits there. I'll wait until tomorrow to grab it. Time for bed.

Hey, if it makes the XMB faster, I'm all for it.
So I expected to get the "An Update is Available" message, and I would have to download it before I could go online. But I actually had to select it without being logged off of the PSN. Is this update not mandatory?

There is this thing called XIM. It connects to your PC usb and can read your PC's kb and mouse then sent signal to the TAC which is a PS2 to PS3 adapter. So with that you can replace the controller with your kb and mouse. For ppl like me who cannot play any FPS with a controller it is a blessing.
I'm not sure. I asked the same thing. I got about 50% downloaded, and I stopped. Maybe they didn't mean to release it so early, and that's why you weren't prompted to download it. I'll wait to see if it causes problems on any systems.

its just a stability patch.. and it blocks OPEN REMOTE PLAY.. they enforce updates when it is necessary.. the enforced updates have some sort of patches in em that may prevent glitches in online play that will give somebody the advantage. but if the update doesnt tweak any type of network communication then to them its not worth enforcing it.. especially when half of the psn community is just gonna complain about it being forced.. thats just what it seems liek to me
The really new feature is the VIDZONE installation!!!!!!! You have to download it in the Playstation Store - other Downloads (i think.. i got the german version!!) After downloading, install under Games and enjoy!!!
Because it isn't mandatory, I didn't want to get it until I heard some reports on whether or not it bricked any PS3s. So I figure go to bed, wake up, and read the boards. Then grab it.
when you had guitar hero world tour instruments plugged in (the wireless usb thing), the ps3 used to autoassign them to slots 1-2, and my dualshock 3 would assign to controller spot 3 even if the gh instruments werent on. After update: my guitar hero instruments assign themselves to slot 7, and my ds3 assigns to slot 1.
I don't mean it's in the ne new firmware!! Just cool a feature!!
