White PS3 - Image 1And the PlayStation 3 world screeches to a halt again for an all-important firmware update newsbit. This just in: PS3 firmware 2.42 is now up and ready for your downloading pleasure.

No details were posted yet on what this blitzkrieg of an update brings about, but we'll be sure to tell you as soon as we find out.

Given the recent troubles that some users have encountered with updating immediately, some of you might have to hold off until the smoke clears. If you want to see what firmware 2.42 brings ahead of everyone, then by all means do so and tell us how it went. Stand by for the changelog.

Update: Users have reported the following changes for PS3 firmware 2.42
  • Life with PlayStation seems to have been released. You can access it by going into folding@home where you'll see a globe you can interact with. Zeroing in on a specific area will yield news from that locale.
  • A Bluetooth mic fix has been added.
Update 2: Sony has come out with official word on firmware 2.42. It reads:

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some PlayStation 3 and PlayStation format software.

Thanks to eaferrari24, canadianbacon, Jeff Blind, D-0-A, Hydro150, hazirvan, peza16, and James Herold for the tip!

And cheers again to
D-0-A for the tip on Sony's official word.

I can't find anything new with this update, updated it fine. Playstation site still says latest OFW is 2.41, And there's no option to download 2.42. I think it's a fix for the laggy trophy loading - it seems much much quicker now.

Whoever thought about the Folding @ home thing is taking a wild guess.. because all of the stuff in folding @ home have been there since the last update for it.

I'm guessing either Life with Playstation will be released Via a download the PSstore that'll let the program move to the XMB OR their going to just add it under the XMB somehow.

The BT issuse has been fixed. The BT issuse was the one where it would work in the XMB, but then quit when you went online.

As for the Life W/PS thats yet to be confirmed. I looked, and I didn't have it. Others say they do have it. Maybe it is just me, or lagg or something.

As for the PS Site, it will take up to but not limited to 24 hours to update their page with proper information.

The life with playstation thing will come later, its not there at the moment. It was confirmed at E3 that it was coming by the end of the month and I'm guessing that thursday is the day we'll actually get it. Thursday is the last day of the month and a PSstore update day. If you put two and two together you get four, and you also know that we should be getting Life with playstation on thursday.

Maybe they patched up any exploits in the Java exploit so all you can do with it is make those little java games and no CFW.

tried countless times already... error message pops up all the time even before it starts to download and when it manages to start downloading error message pops up at 3%.

i'm in no hurry though so i think i'll just lay off it for today.

Because it was never an exploit in the first place. It's an OFFICIAL FEATURE.

I don't think sony is attempting to block any cfw on the ps3 since were nowhere close to getting one. the bd-j exploit doesn't let us do anything illegal so sonys cool about it.

Sony should be cool about it.

It is an official feature. They should be cool enough to allow homebrew through this limited BD-j exploit anyhow.

# can't tell you if it does...TheDude 2008-07-30 08:13
What I can tell you is that I had nasty freezes with Gta4 and my 60 gb launch system until I deleted some demos and the game data from the hard disk and then popped in the game and let it re-install. I've never had a freeze since. Hope this helps.

QJ, You seriously need to learn to check things, not just believe everything anyone posts. Life with Playstation was not released, Looking at Folding@Home there has been nothing changed at all. Check before you post and give false information please.

there is no cfw, so the o is unnecessary.

I don't even know if it has access to multiple SPEs... Anyway, if they let people have a different OS on the PS3, I doubt they'll be ticked off by people using the BD-J feature for homebrew. They learned from their mistakes with the PSP...

Though it's pretty cool to run Java apps on PS3.

Gotta have my Pong! After all it's why i bought such an expensive HD setup. HD Pong.

Seriously though, look forward to what you guys can do with BD-J. I move for a Recovery menu for the poor saps that "brick" on every FW update. Years away though, but it's nice to know that door has creaked open a bit!
