PS3 news - Image 1

Good news, Sony PlayStation 3 owners! The highly-anticipated new firmware for your Cell Processor-powered beastie is finally here, and it's come with an update that's sure to make your Blu-ray or DVD-watching experience just a bit more next-gen. So while you're firing up your media center to download this free-of-charge treasure, here's the changelog to fill us in on the details:
  • Playlists that were created in Music and Photo can now be copied along with the content they contain to a PSP system. You can play the content on the PSP system in the order that was set on the PS3 system.
  • BD Profile 2.0 is now supported. With BDs that support BD-LIVE, you can access internet content for the BD.
  • Resume play* can now be used on a BD or DVD even if the PS3 system has been turned off or the disc has been ejected. However, there are some discs on which resume play cannot be used.
  • DivX content that exceeds 2 GB can now be played. Also, subtitles can now be displayed for DivX content.
To recap - or to re-enlighten, if you haven't been keeping up with the news - Sony went ahead and delivered what they promised, which is the highly-anticipated Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0. What's exciting about this is that it opens up an entire world of new features whenever you pop in a Blu-ray disc movie (that comes with BD features, of course).

Unfortunately, the PSP Portable Copy feature,as announced, did not make the cut this update - so we'll be waiting for it to pop up in a future firmware release. In the meantime, enjoy!

Thanks to ValiX, kaliraver69, dorkdotcom, Josh Q, qual, Quixand, xploren, Someone_PR, and Rebelratld for sending us all the tips!

But what about the other features, such as using the PSP as a remote control? is that included?

I guess just to download and install, then find out for myself :)

A multimedia freak lime me is really a good update. Finally I can even turn off the ps3 and still watch the movie from where was at. Another cool thing is subs in the movies in the hard drive wohoo (maybe a movie downloads in the PSN Store soon?) and in the psp area you can switch the audio to the psp or to the ps3 and the psp have many categories in the settings now, you can even change the themes via remote play...

What's bad is that I don't have any bluray with 2.0 support, I wanted to try it :(...

Now i'll watch all those profile 2.0 movies i have...oh wait...

Question, is there any films out now that support 2.0(not sarcasm)? If so, i'll have to pick one up.

# Subtitles?!bulbous_shot 2008-03-24 17:35
Either they didn't mention that when talking about what was going to be on this update, or I skimmed past it when reading about it. Now I have to re-download a movie I erased because I was pissed that the subtitles wouldn't work, lol.

How can you hold off? that means you don't use any part of the PS3 online, or nothing?

Maybe i'll wait a while until i know if it's possible to do the same stuff with this firmware as it did on 2.17.

You know, accessing the system files. Guess Spiker will let us know. Or at least i hope so.

# .srt or .sub?bolognajoe 2008-03-25 00:33
Has anyone tried subtitles yet? I had a divx file with merged subs and that seemed to work but I have a ton of movies with an external .sub or .srt file and I couldn't get those to work. I'm guessing ps3 only wants to see one file so I'll have to do some merging.

# Its a good update but,GW2 2008-03-25 00:35
if you dont watch blu-rays, and dont watch divx movies, then its pretty useless to you. but personally, i just love and update, i dont care what it does!

# PSP as remoteSembazuru 2008-03-25 02:26
Yes it is there. I just checked it out at work, and I could access the setting to change the audio output from PSP to PS3. (Look under RemotePlay in the Settings column of the XMB.)

# How to tell?Sembazuru 2008-03-25 02:44
I haven't actually put an eyeball on a BD2.0 disc or it's packaging. Does it have a special Icon amongst all the other icons on the bottom of the back that specifies BD2.0 capability?

I just checked the Amazon page for the BD of SawIV , The 6th Day, and Walk Hard. I didn't see anything mentioning BD2.0 capabilities. Incidentally, I also checked out those three movies on Blu-ray.com, and again saw nothing mentioning BD2.0. (Sorry, I found mention of BD2.0 on Blu-ray.com for SawIV, but it was buried in the review...)

So, basically, in the future, how do I know when I'm buying a BD disc if it has the 2.0 capabilities w/o referencing a list? Or will it be a surprise when I get home and pop it into my PS3?

I've been wondering the same about BD1.1....

# Must be mergedDatnizzle 2008-03-25 11:17
Srt's don't work. They must be merged. By the way Sony I lied earlier, I use my DVD player to watch out off region movies also. The PS3 should be able to do this, than I really can throw out my DVD. Or at least put it in my daughters room.

# 2 questionsHenkibojj 2008-03-25 14:24
Number 1: How do I "merge" subtitles into a film? I've always played movies through VLC and with a separate *.srt or *.sub. Is there a special program I will need?

Number 2: This "copy playslists to PSP" feature sounds nice, but I can't find it anywhere when in Remote Play. How do I download stuff onto the PSP from the PS3? When I choose "copy" it only says "insert the storage medium". Will I need the latest PSP FW to do this? I have 3.80 M33-5, if I remember it correctly.
