Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has finally sent out a press release announcing firmware 2.0 for the PlayStation 3 home video game console. The newest PS3 firmware will become available for download on November 8 and includes pretty much all of the features it was rumored to have.

Firmware 2.0 adds a few new features to the whole Remote Play functionality of the PS3 and the PlayStation Portable. Users can now turn their PS3s on anf off remotely using a PSP via the Remote Play function. Remember, Remote Play requires a PS3 with at least firmware 1.80 and a PSP running firmware 3.50.

Customization features have also been buffed up. PS3 owners can now create personalized playlists in both the music and photo sections. Additionally, the XMB's color and brightness can now be changed along with custom themes. New backgrounds will also become available on the PlayStation Network in the future.

Other features include an Information Board on the XMB to keep people up to date on the latest PlayStation news and a new PlayStation Network category and logo. Firmware 2.0 also includes Trend Micro Web Security, which will be free of charge until the end of April 2008.

re: in-game xmb

Sorry carnage3694, there was no mention on in-game XMB. The rumors we were referring to were the ones in this article: http://www.qj.net/Rumor-PlayStation-3-firmware-2-0-out-by-October-30-/pg/49/aid/106093

Hell yeah

I've been waiting for this update like crazy. Now I can really take advantage of remote play with out having to leave y console on all day long or worse if I go on vacation or on a weekend trip. I really hope that they include the in-game XMB. This has to be the best update yet. It pretty much adds everything people have been asking for. Thank You Sony.

Hmm, firmware doesn't seem to add all that much 'cool' stuff for an 2.0, if you ask me. but ah well... =)

BC killed

Whoa... i like the update up till i tried to play GT4. They killed some of the backwards compatibility. I cant beleive this as GT4 is one of my most played games. Have they decided to killed off b/c slowly on the 80gb model or something?
by jrm125 - 2007-11-08 05:49:34
probably

just a glitch...they'll prob fix it in 2.01
by dboy827 - 2007-11-08 11:55:46
backwards compatibility

yeah it seems they are killing the backwards compatibility. Ive been heavily playing final fantasy 12 and updated to 2.00 but now the picture seems distorted. The characters are shorter and wider now. The settings are exactly the same as before so I dont get it. I hope they have a patch that can fix it and soon. Kinda regret updating. Just cause the new PS3s dont have backwards compatibility doesnt mean they gotta screw it up for the guys who have older PS3s.
by Jasper1605 - 2007-11-08 14:19:57
actually

it does mean that they have to screw it up for old ps3s. since one of the sony head-hanchos stated that one of the reasons for no backwards compatability was to force people into buying new games instead of playing old ones. So they are slowly but surely weening those of us who can't let go of the past away from it
by Yang 2nd - 2007-11-08 16:34:28
lets see

yea i hope so
by Yang 2nd - 2007-11-08 16:36:31
agreed

I totally agree with you.
