PS3 Firmware 1.6 out now UPDATE (1)

Well guys, as Ludikhris, Christopher and MESSIAH have managed to tell us, PS3 Firmware 1.6 is out now. If you're a PS3 owner, you may want to try downloading the update now so you can get back to your regularly scheduled Resistance: Fall of Man fragfest. In the meantime, we'd like to ask for your participation in helping us get the word out.

We're currently downloading the update, but if you guys happen to have finished the update, let us know in the comments or on our forums. Inform us of what's in the final changelog for FW 1.6. We'll be scouring the internet for more information, but you can debate the merits of the PS3 FW 1.6 and whether or not we were gimped by this new firmware release on the forums in the meantime.

This post is up for only a few minutes and already the updates are pouring in. Trifecta called our attention and linked us to a post made by user friendly in our PS3 forums. Basically, our good member user friendly has made a list of the changelog for PS3 firmware 1.6 via info from a press release. Here's what he has for us:

Featured Content
Folding@home connectivity, background downloading of content from the PLAYSTATIONÂ®Store, support for Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.

Folding@home Update to Firmware 1.6 - Image 1

The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford University's Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and many cancers.

Enhanced Downloading
Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to six pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB's Network icon.

Remote Play by way of the access point
This feature will enable you to access photos, videos, and music on your PS3 system's hard drive from a nearby PSPÂ® (PlayStationÂ®Portable), will be available for the 20GB configuration, when utilizing an external Wi-Fi router or local wireless access point.

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support / Full size keyboard
Support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology has been added. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3's built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).

Disc Auto-Start
This new option under System Settings allows you to choose whether or not a disc should start automatically upon inserting the disc or turning on your PS3 system.

Blu-ray Disc Rewriteable (BD-RE) Support
PS3 system can now playback BD-RE discs (version 3.0).

Well Since december there has been so much talk of the infamous "March Update".

People on the PSU forums have been going crazy over it for months now, with the answer to every complaint about PS3 being "just wait till march".

Well this is the march update and for what?

Folding? background downloading, and . . .?

Well done Sony, yet another anti climax.

Does anyone know how long the download gonna take and once its done will i be able to play Tekken 5: DR. Because i keep getting the message this game is not supported i live in the uk so i bought a Japanese PS3 but because i couldn't use my Visa card in the Playstation store i signed up and got a UK account and bought Tekken 5.

I am just wondering is it because the in UK isn't out tell the 23 and untill u update the software u can't play it? if anyone knows the answer to this please help me out.

Sony is going to take their time with the updates.

I would expect to see wallpaper around 2009 and if judging by the trend of releases for the PSP I would expect the camera and microphone to be released like... never.

Sony what are you doing to us early adopters.

Why such a long wait for expected functionality.

I am happy about some of the updates, but I expected more. Combine that with the lackluster offerings on the PS store and some game developers (NAMCO) not ponying up the downloadable content to the U.S. store makes me very angry.

Oh well, no one to blame but myself.

It usually takes a good while to download updates, nut this one was done in a flash, installed pretty quick too. My only complaint is that you can't turn your PS3 on with the remote play from your PSP. So you would have to always have your PS3 on and set to remote play before leaving the house in order to acces your stuff from a wi-fi hot spot. I love my PS3 but Sony kinda dropped the ball there. Whats the point if it can't be spontaneous that you can just get to a hotspot and link up with your PS3. Other than that the update was pretty cool.

This is complete garbage! "Big March Update" my you know what. This is the biggest disappointment yet from Sony. They expect to fix all the bad PR and they pull this crap. I used to believe in Sony and expect the PS3 to overcome all the negativity but they continue to disappoint with faulty release dates, poor implementation, and now hyped releases that do a fraction of what they should.

The big march update was supposed to be all about multitasking. OOOOH I can download and play at th same time, that's not the multitasking everyone wanted. everyone wanted in-game xmb-pullup to check messages and play music.

on a totally unrelated subject, I was wondering if anyone has had any technical problems with their ps3. I recently noticed that the first two usb ports on the front of mine won't recognize or charge my sixaxis. the last two work fine. the first two recognized my digital camera, but just not the controller. I don't want to have to send it in for repair, just wondering if anyone has some info.

I love my ps3 i really do. but i mean seriously, im sure these updates that sony has been putting out bother some if not many ps3 early or late adopters. The ps3 is not yet able to multi-task in the area of listening to music while playing any ps3 title put out to date. its a major bummer. Im pretty sure many people wish this feature was available in this *March* update as they will be more intuned with there game and at the sametime they'll enjoy listening to what they like as they play.

About this so called 2.0 FW Update i really hope sony gets it together. Home is a great thing, However i noticed there are many elements missing from the ps3 beta that currently these updates lack. and that is ejecting games from XMB. Being able to quit the game through the xmb interface instead of that black dulgy simplistic menu they are providing through these updates, its a shame. Im curious as to why sony has removed these implementations ...

although, I noticed that the icons show up (as unsupported data), as opposed to earlier, when they didn't show up at all.

Unrelated, but lately my SIXAXIS has been acting goofy on startup; it would be stuck holding down on the d-pad, and it bothers me. Once I go into and exit a game though, it's fine. Also, when I updated to 1.60 and restarted, the damn thing didn't do anything, all I could do was turn the controller or system off. I had to use my keyboard to log in, and then after that the controller worked fine.

What the hell man, anybody having anything similar?

there is now chat support relocated to be right above your friends list.

and, i am not sure of this one, but i believe when you used to press the ps button while in the xmb, the first option that pops up was whether you would like to turn off the controller, followed by whether you would like to turn off the system right underneath it. but now, i believe it is switched around as it now has the ability to shutdown the system above.

I own both an Xbox360 and a PS3. Bottom line PS3 is the better system period. It's has better graphics but even that aside bang for the buck the PS3 is a better system. I was estatic to find out I had everything I need to play my PS3 right out of the box. I didn't have to go buy another $50 worth of equipment just to charge the stupid batteries in my controller, and I didn't have to go buy a Wifi adapter for $100 to get my system on the net the way it should be able to. Oh and I didn't have to plug in some stupid USB adapter to be able to use a keyboard (as of yesterday of course and assuming you have a bluetooth keyboard) So lets see base system $399 + controller charging kit $50 + wifi adapter $100 = $549. Oh but wait you wanted you wanted to watch HD movies? well that's another $200 so let me see $749 for an Xbox that has the same features as the $599 PS3, except for your 40gigs short and you have a proprietary HD so you have to wait till when Microsoft comes out with the 100gig you'll take a straight reaming on the price. I'm impressed with Sony updating the PS3 with this last much needed firmware. Now the only the Xbox360 does that my PS3 doesn't is give me the ability to stream my AAC/MP3s to my PS3 from my Mac. If Sony would scrap the idea of their own music store and just implement iTunes into the PS3 360 would be threw with money but of course that would make too much sense and be too cool for PS3 owners.

Oh by the way did I mention my 360 died after 6 months and probably less than 100 hours of gameplay.

Anyway, 360 fans shut up. I know you're just trying to make yourself feel better about buying a 360 vs a PS3 but fact is you should have waited. Bottomline, I feel like a got a lot for my money with the PS3, but with the 360 I feel like I got hosed as usual from Microsoft.

Oh one last note, the fans in the 360 produce about 5 times the nosie from the PS3. Nothing like hitting that quiet spot in a movie or game and listening to the whirring of fans.

from earlier in the topic..when i had my 360 i had to send it in 5 times because off da*n updates and overheating....and yes i had it on top of my entertainment center with nothing around it so it was well venthilated

mate i foned sony today and they said that its prob got something to do with some data not being transfered wile downloading which to me sounds like ***** cos only us with non uk ps3's cant play tekken 5, they said to ring them back if i still have a problem so i will today. listen add me on ps3 online my tag is devilnash , we will chat there and i'll tell u wat else sony tells me wen i ring them.
