PS3 Firmware 1.6 background downloading explained - Image 1The long-standing rumor about background downloading being XMB-only (and not in-game), has finally been explained. The moment has come for Firmware 1.6 to roll out, and while it's been said that further details about its features will be revealed upon the firmware's release, David Karakker gave a little heads up to Kotaku regarding what background downloading would be like.

Here's the long and short of it:
  • You can play games and download simultaneously but...
  • only as long as you don't use any other network functionality
What does this mean? You can play games while downloading, but it'd have to be offline. Simple. If you go multiplayer or use any other PlayStation Network function, the download will automatically pause. It will resume (without any lost data) after you're done online.

» Excellent!

This is great news. Finally something positive about PS3 moving in the right direction. Keep it up. Now fix the other 20 items that need to be fixed.

-XMB access during game play for starters.

» hey, quick question

is ps3 equipped to handle usb storage?

wouldn't it be nice if maybe we could plug in a usb2.0 hdd and it would work as another volume?

i think it would

can it be done in ydl?

» ...

The PS3 already supports external hard drives as long as they are formatted to Fat32 which the only downside is that your limited to 4GB in file sizes.

I havnt tried ext3 yet but I wouldn't want to because that would make it unusable on any windows machine.

by Creighton - 2007-03-21 17:20
» yea

yep, you can plug in usb sticks, flash cards, usb hard drives etc...downloaded demos will only go to the ps3 hdd i believe.

by comedy - 2007-03-21 17:23
» fat 32!

jesus god in heaven... stupid fat32... oh well, i have an external hdd which does run on fat32 but it's only 40gig.

any chance at all that they might like ntfs?

uh oh. i don't recognise that 'ext3' thing... is that linux? ps3 is my linux experiment - it's like a controlled environment where i won't kill my pc.

Just got the update. Awesome improvements!

» common sense

you are very stupid if you want to download and play online game at the same time. for example would you want to split your internet line between background download and playing resistance? that will just slowdown your resistance game connection and may cause you to be killed. and in resistance and other games, LAG kills.

by Fatlad - 2007-03-22 00:16
» Duh!

I read (hear I think) that it schedules the download and that if you are playing an online game, it pauses the download until you finish. Therefore not causing a lag.

by comedy - 2007-03-22 00:32
» yes

you're actually agreeing with him... he's saying that the pausing thing is good because if it were to download whilst you play online then you get lag...

by xche78x - 2007-03-22 00:42
» omg

your internet connection may be too slow, so you want to do such thing.

why not just finish downloading everything psn can offer then go play till you drop.

anyways its good that you can download and access the XMB, its what ps3 users wanted.

oh wait im still at FW 1.32, why am i not updating, my oh my, i wonder why?

by GordLacey - 2007-03-22 06:36
» Doesn't work in Tekken

I just queued up a few downloads and went to play Tekken - unfortunately my downloads didn't continue while I was playing the game.

» RE:Comedy

If you've got an NTFS formatted HS and want to use it with your PS3 then JUST REFORMAT IT!!! It's not like HD's are built NTFS or FAT, all you've got to do is format it into the FAT32 format.

by Rammek - 2007-03-22 09:18
» What's it like?

Hey Mau, what is it like to be a short-bus ridin' retard who does nothing all day but trash PS3 forums?

Get a f*cking life, dirtbag.

by mohaas05 - 2007-03-22 10:05
» um

what would you need xmb access for? its likely there wouldn't be enough spare power to do anything else.

by Datnizzle - 2007-03-22 11:42
» Thanks hush

he's right just reformat it, volumes of a certain size , I think 300gb or more, at one time needed linux to format to fat32, I don't know if this is still the case or not.

by wrong - 2007-03-22 12:08
» this is wrong

actually, i played resistance, and i was able to get online without canceling my download

by Crow - 2007-03-22 13:01
» Interesting

Notice MCS isn't spouting nonsense like a bad case of explosive diarrhea in this comment section, because they're nothing that he can b*tch about.
