PS3 EU Launch - Camping Season - Image 1IGN informs that as early as March 21, folks are already lining up at the Oxford Street branch of official Sony retail partner Virgin Megastores. However, as early as some folks are lining up, IGN notes that when they they visited the makeshift Sony PlayStation 3 launch "camp" – what else are you going to call an area that offers a roof, free drinks, some games and food – only two people were there to greet them.

IGN notes that they were a bit surprised that not as many folks as they expected were lining up this early. They speculate that perhaps this has something to do with the price.

It is also reported that  several big London stores have aborted their PS3 midnight openings due to security fears. This is a somewhat negative report that has a silver lining, given that the openings were stopped not due to lack of demand, but over safety concerns. This concern over safety of course is something we here at QJ are amused, and glad with; especially when you recall the reports of violence during the PS3 North American launch.

Anyhow, we'll keep an eye on news reports, and update you if the line has grown, or if something undesirable pops up. Stay tuned.

» People line up a entire day early

And thats not enough?

How many most likely have pre-orders?

Man blah blah with the price. Meanwhile Xbox fans go nuts for a 479.00 fake xbox with no HD DVD or wifi..

Good one highps3.

» enough with the price already

Europe is arguably Sony's strongest market. If people who preordered the console are guaranteed one at launch, as retailers say, then why would they wait out on the street instead of getting up early?

» pre-orders

IGN posted a report about how 80-84% of the consoles were already pre-ordered, but the euro's are taking our launch into their hands real seriously. I mean have you heard all the gun shots that happened here over a ps3? some people died and some got trampled over.

» look at me!

i'm a person who pre-ordered a ps3! i did it today, and i can collect it at midnight at the hmv in my home town!

hooray!

i'm not queueing mind you, i don't think there'll be that many revellers out at that time tbh.

but i have got this to say, i pre-ordered today and was told i had a guaranteed one for midnight... and that's like 1 day before launch. so demand is high, but not killer high. i did find argos didn't have any for launch day though.

and you know what? i havne't got the cash to go spending frivolous amounts of money on something like a ps3, but i did it anyway... i felt the need, you know that thing inside you which won't rest until you have the object of your fancy.

yes, 425 quid, translates to about 850 US dollars... harsh.

but still we pay.

sony are strong here, but i have played enough x360 to know i don't want one. and wii... bah! there's ONE worthwhile game on that, and i will get it for gcn.

ooh, i'm excited!

» "as early as" March 21.

I love it. I remember back here on the west coast people were lining up 8 days in advance. I personally lined up for 3 and then endured a quick riot the morning prior to launch.

» hmmmm

I remember working in Manchester when the 360 launched......there wasnt even any lines at any major stores. But theres always a negative spin on this site....always

Yeah Daz i have noticed that QJ always seems to be downbeat about everything. I wont be going to a midnight launch. I have mine pre-ordered and will get a good nights sleep first. Why queue 2 days early? It's just dumb, the UK has five times the units that PS2 had at launch. Thats plenty for the early adopters.
