PS3PS3 Land recently reported some PS3 details, given by Izumi Kawanishi, head of the Software Platform division of SCEI. Let's take a look at 'em, shall we?

First off, Izumi-san said that the fan "spins steadily" whenever users play games, and won't be needed for XMB and web browsing. Also, it can connect to various USB devices such as the PSP. However, those that have special transfer methods aren't detected by the PS3 just yet, although Sony's working on Walkman connectivity.

You can play PS1 games! Just connect your PSP to your PS3, and voila! You get instant PS1 nostalgia. And although there's no DVD upscaling features as of now, Sony's looking into it, so we can probably look forward to that in the future. Meanwhile, the Blu-Ray's reported to be responding really fast, and Izumi attests that the said PS3 media is the "fastest among the Toshiba, Sony, Matsushita HD players/recorders" he tried out.

Here are other features lifted from our source:
  • The picture/audio quality for video playback is excellent. Though Cell does not presently do much post processing, they are researching it.
  • High Definition videos are converted to LPCM and outputted via HDMI.
  • No DVD upscaling for the time being. But they are looking at user needs and have a plan for the support.
  • The Blu-ray player's response is fast. The interviewer says he believes that the PlayStation 3 is the fastest among Toshiba, Sony, Matsushita HD players/recorders he tested.
  • By pressing the triangle button the XMB shows the folder tree structure just like windows explorer.
  • It can connect with USB mass-storage devices such as PSP, but not with ones with special transfer methods such as iPod and Walkman. They are currently working on Walkman support.
  • They decided not to reveal the RSX clock speed.
  • The EE+GS embedded in the PS3 does emulation for PS1/PS2 for initial shipments PS3, so no graphics upgrade for the time being. The software emulation technology is almost complete but not ready for the launch. As soon as it is ready, the EE+GS unit will be removed.
  • In Remote Play with PSP for the 60GB version, the PS3 resolution becomes 480p (16:9) and converts the screen to MPEG-4 Simple Profile at around 1Mbps to send it to the PSP. All control is transferred to the PSP and you can control the PS3 by pressing the PSP buttons. BD/DVD and other copyright-protected materials can't be sent. As for games the support will come in the near future.
  • The web browser can open up to six pages simultaneously max. 64MB memory is always reserved for XMB functions (I.E. instant messaging, voice chat, etc.)
  • Installing Linux creates a new HDD partition separately from the PS3 partition. After the setup, you can choose which system to use at the boot menu. You can choose to auto-boot Linux too.
  • - Aside from Linux, SCE's developers are still seeking the way to publish proper software development environment for the PS3 main OS and PSP for general users. But right now the PS3 main OS can run only signed applications (while PS3 Linux can run whatever applications on it).

"They decided not to reveal the RSX clock speed."

Seems the rumours of a clock speed reduction for RSX must be true then, otherwise there should be no problem for Sony to state the clock speed, like they did at E3 2005! It was also interesting that for the first time, Sony refuse to mention the polygon power of their console. Is it because it's less than that of the 360?

I thought once the PS3 was launched, all would be revealed, but we know nothing more about RSX than we did last year!

I can't wait for my PS3 (I don't expect to get one this year though), and I'm ONLY interested in it as a games machine (so I'll leave the Linux to others), but why are Sony so secretive about many aspects of it's specs today? Is it because it breaks down the claim of being twice as powerful as the 360, which they made it appear to be last year (but developers say otherwise)?

Don't be trouble my friend. The PS3 graphics will be at least good as x360. For the first time a Playstation machine as better or equal graphic as it's competitors. So let does arguments for all XBOX FANBOY.

PS: This week it's appear that Sony doesn't forgot is fans! With such a great hardware.

True, but that's because more powerful consoles launched after Sony (i.e. N64, XBox). This time, Sony's console launches a year after the 360, so if anything, it should be much more powerful, not just slightly more if at all.

So yes, in that respect I am disappointed, especially as I'm only interested in it as a games machine, not a computer.

Still, I do look forward to it for the games. :)

''This time, Sony's console launches a year after the 360''

Not really because the conception of the hardware was in the same time as X360. Don't forget it was delay due to Blue-ray laser... In the earlier Gen, all the games companies didn't put the top of the line GPU and CPU in the industry. So it was easier to put a better GPU 1 year after. Now consoles have the best gpu and cpu in the market. Sure Sony could have put more Ram and 2 GPU to put the competition in there knees. But what would be the price of such a machine? I think PS3 is a good deal for this Gen.

Well, according to Sony at the time, the initial delay to November wasn't a hardware issue, but because final specification of the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) was delayed (Sony have yet to admit to anything more than that). The Blu-ray laser problem for launch has effected the number of launch machines available, pushing back the Europeon launch date and limiting numbers in Japan and the US.

But yes, and the delay has resulted in it being launched a year after the 360, instead of 4-6 months as planned. Had Sony aimed for November 2006 in the first place (with the benefit of hindsight of course), NVidia would not have needed to complete their GPU so early, hence they would have had time to make it more powerful (6 months is a long time in the world of GPU technology).

Yes I know it sounds like I'm complaining or whinging or whatever ;), but I can't help but feel a little disappointed, especially given the impression of the PS3 being much more powerful than the 360 at E3 2005 (and no, I wasn't taken in by the Killzone trailer).

Hence I'm still interested in the RSX specs, especially given that the E3 2005 specs have been argued over for so long, and given that NVidia dropped the clock speed for their XBox GPU twice before launch, so I'm interested in whether the same has happened to RSX.

We'll see I guess, and with linux on the console, it wouldn't be long before some-one finds out the clok speed of RSX and performs some benchmark tests. It wouldn't make me enjoy my PS3 games any less of course ;) but it is something I'm interested in, especially after all the hype.

Well look at it this way: PSP's clock speed still isnt at it's full potentional. And the only real reason why it's still that way is because of battery life. Since PS3 is a console, it's highly unlikely power is an issue, let alone price.

And if that isn't enough then check out motorstorm. I'm not a racing fan but the simple fact that motorstorm is a post-launch (or atleast 1st year) title is something to glee about.

Heat and stability are key issues ContrAss, and even more so are yeilds. All of these determine whether a CPU or GPU can run at a particular clock speed within a particular environment for a particular cost.

Yeilds can greatly effect cost, because if they can not get enough chips working at a certain clock speed, then the cost for that speed will be very high, and so a lower clock speed may need to be used instead to keep cost down. For PC graphics cards, they can simply sell it at different prices for different GPU clock speeds, but on a fixed product like a console, they have to choose ONE option only. Heat is also a factor, but given what we know of the PS3, I doubt that was the main issue in this case.

Motorstorm does look great btw. :)
