PS3 cross-game chat confirmed by EU PSN manager?

We've seen a lot of "confirmations" for the much-rumored and believed-to-be-impending arrival of cross-game chat to the Sony PS3. Here's another, this time from someone pretty high up the PSN chain of command.

Responding to a cross-game chat query on the EU PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Network product manager James Thorpe let out this rather interesting answer:

I wish I could just give you a date, I really do!! Trust me when I say that as soon as I hear from 'up top' I will be shouting about it and making myself the most popular person on the blog.

Hmm. It's not a direct confirmation, but seeing how it's from the EU PSN's own product manager it does carry quite a bit of weight. In the course of writing this article, Thorpe's comment also disappeared from the blog, adding another tantalizing layer to the whole thing. Good thing I managed to screencap it:

Thanks to Naroon for the tip!

For flip sake release it already! The goddamn feature is great and wanted by every person who owns a goddamn PS3. If 3.10 doesn't have Cross Game Chat I'm gonna be pissed.

@Bountyhunter53:

No, 3.10 will NOT feature XGC. Check back a few posts down on QJ.net; there is a post with the video showing the features of 3.10.

This is the second person who is close enough to Sony to actually matter who has let something slip about the feature. First it was that Naughty Dog dev, now this guy. I think it's sorta finished, they're probably just testing the hell out of it so it doesn't crash every time we use it.

I say just be patient, because the less you think about it, the sooner you'll have it.

I know 3.10 doesn't have it but I'm thinking that Sony would go to their old tricks and put in as a secret feature which isn't documented or shown.....

E.g Globe thing when changing time zone wasn't really put in their changelog.

Will they be releasing some new avatars any time soon?

And/or an option to change the text size on the XMB. I remember a lot of people being unhappy about the new sized text.

@Bountyhunter53: No way they would hide Cross-game chat in a firmware update. This feature is way too big and important to hide it. It would be wasted advertising.

yay lets turn it into xbox live where everyone wants to stay in a party during an online session and not communicate with other players during team-communication based games. i hope they ***** make it XMB only.

look... It's November. Playstation 3 graced our presences on November 17, 2006 in North America. If they don't come out with Cross Game Chat in this next god forsaken update. Then Sony is only burning themselves at the cross...

Seriously Sony... pull the finger out of the ass and get with the f***ing times...

so i'll break it down layman's style: basically, you take a game put in a cross and you speak to it. cross-game chat. bingo, bango.

Why would they announce this feature? I mean it's already been "leaked" that it's near finish and probably in another update, and now this guy from Sony. Most of the time all of Sony's big announcements get's leaked all of the web and it looses it's impact. So basically doing something like that would actually be pretty smart and clever.

And, this is news is obvious. I've been saying for awhile as have most people it's in the works but it's not as easy as 123 and boom it's available. It's a huge demanded feature that must be tested thoroughly before releasing. Not to post a fanboyish comment but, 360 was barely tested or constructed enough before it launched and we still have rrod problems. Sony has always been a company who thrives on things being done right. Even though things like DRE and the Blu-ray lens failing happens, they're pretty solid when it comes to failure rates of the product and features. That's not to say it's always perfect, it has happen bug/glitches to go unnoticed when launched which 3.00 did to Uncharted 1, since it's nearly impossible to have everything perfectly fine, but usually Sony wants it to be as perfect as can be before releasing something as widely asked and huge as XGC.

So why are people still whining?

Anyone remember how it was before the update that gave in game XMB access?

And, to the people asking, cross game chat is just being able to chat with someone, whilst they're playing another game.

Ugh. Ignore Truk.

Cross Game chat is the ability to have voice chat with your friends even though you are in different games. As things stand right now, if you want to have voice chat with someone else on PNS you either need to be in the same game (for games that support voice chat) or in the XMB voice chat feature.

Isn't there already a voice chat feature in the XMB? What people are asking for is CROSS GAME voice chat.

speak for yourself.

I cant understand why its wanted at all.

I can understand the need to talk if you're in the same game but what is the point in talking to someone who is playing a different game?

is it just talking for the sake of talking? are you a girl? because this seems like more "attack of the feminine male" syndrome

must be all that "women are equal" crap and "men can cry too" rubbish you were all fed growing up. I honestly feel sorry for you kids sometimes!

suppose at least some of you will grow out of it at some point.

I'm guessing the reason it's taking so long has little to do with the technical details and everything to do with the licensing details. Sony probably charges developers a fee to have the voice chat feature in their game. There's most likely some conflict about pricing or current contracts that's causing them to drag their feet.
