Folding@Home - Image 1

Over at the official U.S. community site of PlayStation, member Xenokai posted about the up and coming event this weekend that involves the Folding@Home feature. If you're not familiar with this, it's actually a joint project by Stanford University and Sony that aims to research protein folding and misfolding in order to gain an understanding of how these are related to disease.

Anyway, the said event is dubbed as Sunday Night Foldathon (SNF), and here's how it goes: This Sunday night, March 25, all PS3 users are encouraged to turn on their systems and run the folding program. It could be anytime you want, even right before you go to Dreamland and you can just let the program run until you wake up in the morning. And that's it.

According to Xenokai, the purpose of this event is to let Sony, or Stanford University for that matter, know that their work and project is being appreciated and that the PS3 community is willing to help out. In simple terms, it's a "show of force" on the part of the community. One important thing to note is that SNF was conceptualized and is now being implemented purely by members of the community. Both Sony and Stanford have no hand on this whatsoever. Regardless, we know the two would be very thankful if this turns out to be a success.

QJ members have also set up QJ's own Folding@Home team (team number 52781) to help out with Stanford University's project. Folding@Home attempts to understand diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and many forms of cancer among others. It will be an optional feature bundled with the next PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update.

Yeah I accidentaly left mine on for approximately 68 hours this weekend. I ended up downloading Def Jam: Icon, and didnt think twice about turning it off. whoops. I also second the idea about the Playstation Store Credit. Then I wouldnt have to pay anything.

# I'm in for sureGuest 2007-03-21 10:57
Count me in for sure. I really hope that some nonprofit group gets a hold of this and starts a lottery of sorts in co-op with sony and stanford that will give out (donated ) prizes to those to run the programs every month. I'm more than willing to run this just for the sake of good. But I know that soooo many more people would run this, if say, they got one ticket per hour of running the program for the end of the month lottery with a possibility to when games, sony merchandise, or anything that was tax deductable and donated by companies around the world. even a little chance of reward would beef this up greatly. either way I'll be running it.

This is a great plan everyone. As for Sony giving us PSN Store credit, that would be great, but please remember that What we're doing is charity and not really costing us anything. Hope this goes great!

# me too #4Guest 2007-03-21 11:36
can i take this idea one step further?

if we can time it up globally and get a good number of PS3s online maybe we can hit the 1000 Tflop mark and make history!!!!!

if any one can calculate it in see how likely is it, these will be great

we will make the first PetaFlop computing grid in one night, now this is a real reward..

and no one else can do that but PS3 users

can any one help with that?

yea, we should all definately do this to help stanforsd in there research. it could be a great and powerful thing. just remember though guy: IF YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET WHEN RUNNING IT, IT COUNTS FOR NOTHING, because, i mean, how the hell else could they know whether we're running it or not

*raises eyebrow*

# After the Fold-a-thonGuest 2007-03-24 02:58
Please keep on folding after the Fold-a-thon. The more you fold, the more gets done for research. Folding is best done every day, not just one day.

# Oh, yeah...Guest 2007-03-24 03:02
And you can also fold on your computer too. I highly recommend downloading and running F@H on both your PS3 and PC (or Mac or Linux comp or GPU...yeah, even some graphics cards can be used to help fold) 24/7
