Monday morning's come and gone but the crippling PS3 bug remains active. Sony has laid down a new target date for the fix: within the next 24 hours.

"We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours," posted SCEA's Patrick Seybold on the US PlayStation blog. "In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data."

The bug, which Sony believes is being caused by a problem in the PS3's clock and has so far steered clear of PS3 Slims, has been known to cause the following problems:

The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”
When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the followingmessage appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have beensigned out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appearson the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to installtrophies. Please exit your game.”

They could offer some sort of free download from the store as a gesture of goodwill, once it's all been sorted.

Although, I haven't switched my PS3 on since Saturday morning, so haven't had this problem.
I only just learned of it through QJ.net. Does it affect consoles even if you don't attempt to login to the PSN? Mine is set as manual login.

Quoting Bob Smith:

No, it doesn't effect your PS3 as long as you don't try to sign in. Also, don't try to play a PS3 game online or start a Online Only PS3 game (like Warhawk of Battlefield 1943).

It will effect you either way, since the issue is not based on PSN, but on the the system clock. If the game has trophy support, it will not work, if the game is downloaded, it will not work, if the game features DLC, it will not work.

The only way around it is if you are lucky and are for whatever reason unaffected *mostly only launch 60gb versions have gotten lucky* or if you are using a slim, you are seemingly immune.

Oh, thanks for the replies.
Does it attempt to reset the internal clock due to finding an Internet connection? Perhaps people could either remove their ethernet cable, or switch off their wireless router?

Either way, I think I'll wait. Not too fussed.

your trophies would come back when the Network comes back online. so they wouldn't be gone techincally. they are stored to your account. so you wouldn't lose them unless you deleted your account

I have a 60GB PS3, but haven't switched it on since Saturday. Only learned of this problem a few hours ago through QJ.net. How bad is it? Does it affect you even if you don't attempt to login to the PSN? Mine is set to manual login.

that half of the people who really talk about this are pissed about sonys lack of effort and talk of selling/xbox, and the other half expect something over this...

do not expect anything past a formal "were sorry" since there is no logic to what got hot from what i understand IE some fats work, most dont, and most slims work but ssome dont... it would take too much effort to give only those effected a gift to keep us happy where as i would be even more pissed if lets say every psn user gets 1 free download or something stupid... since there is a GREAT number of people not effected by this

I have 25 people on my friends list, and with one exception who i know has a slim, nobody has been on for almost a full day. Most of these people leave their system on 24/7, and don't ever log off, let alone spend a full day offline.

You're kidding yourself if you think a "GREAT number of people are not effected". The majority *ie-more then half* of users are currently locked out of something they spent a lot of money on.

# Ridiculous!Guest 2010-03-01 14:12
Just when im starting to get into white knight chronicles and i cant even load it offline to play. Utterly pathetic!

I must say, i dont care about the damn trophies, i just want to play!

Best be fixed soon, the whole reason i got the ps3 was because of two RROD's, and if this is a re-call of units fix they better compensate because my fat has more functions than the useless slims, and i actually use linux on mine!

Thats a lie. They know the geohotz exploit works well on the old fat ps3 with otherOS.

I'll bet you that Sony is purposely trying to test a new way to detect exploits on fat ps3's and just called it a bug.

So when the geohotz exploits leads to real homebrew working on ps3, Sony will have some weapon to fight back.

...or not.

This bug affected PS3's that were never connected to the internet as well, this has nothing to do with that. It's an internal clock issue.

No, this bug also affects PS3's that have never connected to the internet. Also, they cannot install or apply an update to your PS3 without offering the option and giving you the choice of weather you want to install it or not.

if you can't play downloaded games i think i know why...
whenever i want to play this error shows up "the copyright protection information is invalid"
i think it's because the game was copyrighted in 200x and the ps3 date switched to 1999...
idk, that's my theory

by 24 hrs due to by 24 hrs everyone should be off "February 29" which is actually March 1. Also for those that say it doesn't affect people who don't log on are wrong. There have been threads about people who never logged on having this 12/31/99 issue. It is most likely due to a leap year bug.

Okay I did this disconnect your internet from your PS3. Then I turned on my PS3 the only thig I saw wrong was the date so I changed it manually. the date said 3/2/2010 so i moved it back to 3/1/2010. And now playing(Red Alert 3 Commander's Challenge) I think as long as your now getting online your fine. I'll keep everyone up to date if things change.

My PS3 reset to December 31 1999, do note that you can only set back to 2000. When it rolls over it will make the Internet crash! Quick, get the "Special Punch". I think they should give a free game, of our choice for free. Only to those inconvienced by this, I wanna play Battlefield 1943 ;( . They should give us AvP XD

I thought everyone knew that story by now.

Back in the day BEFORE logins my 'name' was WTF!?!?!?!?!. Then they started requiring logins but the site would accept that as my username so I had to pick something else. Then the site kept REQUIRING a subject line which SUCKED so I just put that in there. Plus it helped me to site search for my posts. People could find my old and new together.

Now you FINALLY don't have to put in a subject line...so...that's that.

Really Sony? The clock is what's causing the problem? How did this not happen all the other leap year months? What happened, one of your "techs" fell asleep playing Xbox360, and for that matter, how is it the 360 wasnt affected by something as dumb as that? I dont give a sh*t about trophies comin back or not, i can always jus play the game again and get them, so everyone CRYING about trophies n all that, grow up and see the bigger picture....i jus want my ps3 working again. I jus got Heavy rain and its a 60 dollar paper weight in my hands, so really, WTF SONY!!!! On the subject, if this damages ANYONE's ps3, Sony should be held accountable, should recall the systems affected, and should repair them FREE of charge, REGARDLESS of receipt, insurance, or model. It isnt much of anything to ask that Sony do this considering in retrospect that it looks like this; we pay to buy the system, and Sony damages it for us. Seriously, wtf! And the rumor of Sony charging for internet service thas been floating around,...seriously, if it does start charging, u might as well throw it out n get an Xbox, cuz thas wut its gonna turn into. STEP UP UR GAME SONY, YOU SLAAAAACKING SO HARD!!!!

Anyways, I called her when I saw this problem and told her not to use the ps3 and that we were lucky nothing went wrong when we used it last night.

She tells me that when she tuned on the ps3 that it said it could not sign in and the date was wrong!!!

So anyways, how can I tell if my ps3 got fucked by "data loss" or any of the issues around this problem?...without causing my problems of course

This is a funny move of Sony by "bugging" the PS3's, this way it screws them for a few hours taking/removing what can lead to piracy/homebrew and then they're all fine again.

Some bullshit this is.

But if it wasn't for Geohot, Sony wouldn't be all worked up.
