Monday morning's come and gone but the crippling PS3 bug remains active. Sony has laid down a new target date for the fix: within the next 24 hours.
"We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours," posted SCEA's Patrick Seybold on the US PlayStation blog. "In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data."
The bug, which Sony believes is being caused by a problem in the PS3's clock and has so far steered clear of PS3 Slims, has been known to cause the following problems:
- The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
- When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the followingmessage appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have beensigned out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
- When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appearson the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to installtrophies. Please exit your game.”
- When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via theInternet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current dateand time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
- Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from thePlayStation Store before the expiration date.

Although, I haven't switched my PS3 on since Saturday morning, so haven't had this problem.
I only just learned of it through QJ.net. Does it affect consoles even if you don't attempt to login to the PSN? Mine is set as manual login.

No, it doesn't effect your PS3 as long as you don't try to sign in. Also, don't try to play a PS3 game online or start a Online Only PS3 game (like Warhawk of Battlefield 1943).

The only way around it is if you are lucky and are for whatever reason unaffected *mostly only launch 60gb versions have gotten lucky* or if you are using a slim, you are seemingly immune.
Reply
Does it attempt to reset the internal clock due to finding an Internet connection? Perhaps people could either remove their ethernet cable, or switch off their wireless router?
Either way, I think I'll wait. Not too fussed.

I have a 60GB PS3, but haven't switched it on since Saturday. Only learned of this problem a few hours ago through QJ.net. How bad is it? Does it affect you even if you don't attempt to login to the PSN? Mine is set to manual login.

do not expect anything past a formal "were sorry" since there is no logic to what got hot from what i understand IE some fats work, most dont, and most slims work but ssome dont... it would take too much effort to give only those effected a gift to keep us happy where as i would be even more pissed if lets say every psn user gets 1 free download or something stupid... since there is a GREAT number of people not effected by this

You're kidding yourself if you think a "GREAT number of people are not effected". The majority *ie-more then half* of users are currently locked out of something they spent a lot of money on.

I must say, i dont care about the damn trophies, i just want to play!
Best be fixed soon, the whole reason i got the ps3 was because of two RROD's, and if this is a re-call of units fix they better compensate because my fat has more functions than the useless slims, and i actually use linux on mine!

I thought it was hilarious.

I'll bet you that Sony is purposely trying to test a new way to detect exploits on fat ps3's and just called it a bug.
So when the geohotz exploits leads to real homebrew working on ps3, Sony will have some weapon to fight back.
...or not.

whenever i want to play this error shows up "the copyright protection information is invalid"
i think it's because the game was copyrighted in 200x and the ps3 date switched to 1999...
idk, that's my theory

Where's your WTF?!?!?!?!?!?! man?
I have an 80GB phat, no backwards compatability, and my sister is playing Heavy Rain just fine...looks like we're lucky.

I thought everyone knew that story by now.
Back in the day BEFORE logins my 'name' was WTF!?!?!?!?!. Then they started requiring logins but the site would accept that as my username so I had to pick something else. Then the site kept REQUIRING a subject line which SUCKED so I just put that in there. Plus it helped me to site search for my posts. People could find my old and new together.
Now you FINALLY don't have to put in a subject line...so...that's that.

She tells me that when she tuned on the ps3 that it said it could not sign in and the date was wrong!!!
So anyways, how can I tell if my ps3 got fucked by "data loss" or any of the issues around this problem?...without causing my problems of course

Some bullshit this is.
But if it wasn't for Geohot, Sony wouldn't be all worked up.
