PS3 - Image 1

The PS3 continues to prove that it's worth your cash. Apart from its great online and multimedia features, Sony's powerful piece of hardware also boasts the fastest Blu-Ray disc loading speed out there - by a sizable margin.

The PS3 was pitted against standalone BD players and their load speeds were timed and compared. To no surprise at all, the PS3 emerged on top. Figures below:
  • Sony PS3: 43 seconds
  • Sony BDP-S350: 66 seconds
  • Sony BDP-S5000ES: 67 seconds
  • Sony BD Recorder BDZ-T50: 80 seconds
  • Sony BD Recorder BDZ-X100: 81 seconds
The figures speak for themselves. The PS3 out-loads the nearest competitor by more than 20 seconds. Hopefully, this little bit of info will persuade buyers to go for the PS3 when it comes to their Blu-Ray needs. It doesn't hurt that you can go play games on it either.

» I would

Personally rather buy a PS3 than a stand alone blu-ray even though I have one, really because it has all those features, plus like the article says it can play games why not buy something that does more than play movies?

by andre_euro - 2008-10-31 19:27
» luks?

the look of it, bd players are much nicer looking, and can create a stylish environment, and for a majority of adults, that is more important than playing games.

personally though i would rather a ps3, as hd isn't a major thing for me, so the gaming would persuade me. :)

Nothing to do with majority. in fact it might be the more mature decision to pick the one with the most features over the way something looks...

The PS3 looks great!

» Wow..

The first time I saw the PS3, it was a picture and it reminded me of a printer I once had. If I hadn't hydroplaned and wrecked my car, I would honestly get a PS3 at the very least for the Blu-Ray player. I don't know much about the PS3, but I'm tempted more and more.. I really really want one!

» Great News

I'm wondering though that as we learn more about blu-ray and the read write speeds become faster, is it a case of a software update - IE firmware to bring your drive up to date, or is it a hardware issue, meaning you would only get the faster read write speeds if you update your system entirley when the sku is updated. Because cleary in most cases I know people would prefer lesser load times on some games, if new sku's come out with better BD drives, the ones who bought early including myself might be left feeling a little sour. Since the expense of the system kinda restricts you upgrading just for that reason, obviously. If anyone can enlighten me on this, I would be much obliged.

you can't compare a bluray player with the PS3 .A bluray player has better quality ,more deep color than the PS3.

The ps3 looks great but not as a bluray player

by andre_euro - 2008-11-01 12:29
» oh come on

ps3 is ugly, i'm a sony fan, but i have to say its ugly, like a long bubble...a flat n thin player looks better, and if money wasn't a huge problem for a person, bd player would be a better option because of it.(assuming they don't play games)

by Master Chef - 2008-11-01 14:56
» Well

I suppose if you're 100% sure you will never play the games, the PS3 is a waste over a standalone player, some of which can be had for less than $200

I would pick up the PS3 of course

And I'd say some BD players look better than the PS3 and fit more entertainment room styles, while others don't.

PS3 wins overall, considering what you get for the extra $150-200

you gotta buy one.

its about the tv's, not the bluray players...

can you really see a difference when a bluray standalone player and a ps3 is tested on the same monitor?

by damonous - 2008-11-02 07:50
» ??

@dominicanito: Do you actually OWN both? How do you come to that generalization so easily? --While it is true that some magazines have been reporting that the AV is apparently improved over even the PS3 with newer standalone hardware .... I have yet to see it for myself. I have both a PS3 and a Panasonic DMP-BD10 (got it for the DVD-Audio support, and for when I don't want to hear a fan at all). I can tell you for certain that, using the same TV, same AVR, same TV HDMI input + color setting, etc.: the PS3's picture is noticeably a hair sharper than the Panasonic. And, while the Panny is a first-gen device, so is my PS3 (remember, firmware has improved, but the basic PS3 hardware design is still 2006). As far as colors go, there is no difference; at least not that one is 'less-capable' than the other. The Panny lets me set custom color preferences, but that's it.

» Media features, too

@Navani: The other advantage of the PS3 is its Media Center capabilities. It's a great place to put MP3's, etc. Also, when running CD's, you can set it to 'upscale' the Audio to 176Khz; making it a killer audio player as well. Few standalone machines would be equipped so well.

by Navani - 2008-11-02 16:50
» @ damonous

Really? That's so awesome.. It's like an entertainment center then? Whenever I get my own place that's the first thing I'm going to buy +p Stick my television and all my stuff in a corner of the living room with my PS3 and just chill

thats a fair summary, :)

» YEAH

WELL IM GLAD THEY LOAD REAL FAST THATS SO AWESOME BUT DOESN'T TAKE AWAY THE FACT THAT BLU RAY WILL BE A EPIC FAIL AND FALL OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH LIKE UMD, DIGITAL DOWNLOADS ARE GONNA BE THE FUTURE IF NOT DVD WILL CONTINUE TO OWN THE FIELD AND MAKE THE MOST PROFITS

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-03 11:59
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Ditto. I had no idea! Good to know.

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-03 12:02
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

@Master Chef - Have you even looked at the specs of your "low cost" BD Player? All the ones I looked at are 720p only.

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-03 12:04
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

@dominicanito - That's a bunch of BS. I've seen the PS3 and BD Players side by side at retails stores many times. ZERO DIFFERENCE.

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-03 12:09
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Speaking of epic fails... how about you tell us what percentage of people have over 2Mbps download capability in order to support HD downloads?

Lets also look at a specific market, the US. Even if most of the UK can support that wouldn't change the US market.

Here's a hint, BD is available to 100% of the US market.

I'm waiting for your answer.

Either way, digital download can NOT compete with the quality of BD.

by eggwonder - 2008-11-03 15:57
» uh...

im not that well off and i got a 8Mbps connection... so if people don't got over 2 then there is something wrong...

less than 2mbps + epic fail + lame isp + get new internet

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-04 05:07
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

@eggwonder - You have no clue what you are talking about.

So the MILLIONS of people using satellite are failures? That's just one quick example. There are TONS of others.

There are also people STILL ON DIALUP!!!! Because either no alternative exists for them or they simply can not afford better.

by eggwonder - 2008-11-04 15:26
» wow

im somewhat broke and afford a 8mbps connection...

Now if someone is using a dialup connection with a ps3 then they should either get new isp of broadband or dsl, or just sell their ps3 cause the online probably aint workin.

And if u use satellite... too bad. you can probably get at least a 2mbps connection for the same price as satellite so make the change.

Also Trog is right about it going digital. Look at how big the storage spaces are gettin for everything.(100+gb ps3 and 360 hdds) if you own a console then you probably have a broadband or better connection and can accept going digital.

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-05 08:34
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Yup, you are completly clueless.

So your answer to these people is to just spend more money?

That's easier said then done pal. If you can afford 8Mbps then you are NOT poor.

Also, what part of "no alternative exists for them" did you not understand?

Do you think EVERY SINGLE American has DSL or Cable running up to their house? If you do, then you are ignorant.
