1. Price factor. Those drives are more expensive then 3.5" drives.
2. Using an external drive for everything would be a pain on the XMB level.
There are "needs" for this. Plus one good advanage would be removing the massive HEAT source that is the internal HDD.

Anyway, what are you referring to when you say "a real external HDD"? You CAN use a REAL external HDD with this. Look for an eSATA solution over a USB solution. However it's better then a USB version as you get to plug directly into the SATA bus. WAY MORE SPEED. The power cord would go from the external HDD to the wall. It has nothing to do with the PS3 and it would still be needed for this "real external HDD" solution you speak of.
Also, the whole argument about not having a cord running from the PS3 is 100% bogus. If you decide to use a normal USB external solution you still have a CORD going to the PS3. If one is ugly to you then so is the other so what does it mater?
If you are referring to a solution that only uses the USB 5v for power then again your argument will be moot as those drives are under powered and can not compete. Apples and Oranges.
What would have made more sense was having this solution:
1. Reach the edge of the PS3 case so it looks like nothing more then a normal plug on the PS3.
2. Instead of having a cable run from the device, just put an eSATA port on it so we can plug into it ourselves.
Other wise in order to use your existing external HDD solution just get a SATA to eSATA converter.

as far as this "solution" some people just feel the need to do things because they can. if your using your ps3 for gaming/movies/music - normal use - then there's no real benefit to this especially as far as aesthetics are concerned except for the speed but how fast do you really need your movies/music to load? if it aint broke.... on the other-hand if you are experimenting with linux, or pirating......that's a different story

I realy need to backup my stuff.

Download Knoppix and burn onto a DVD. Reboot your computer using the Knoppix DVD as the boot device, voila Linux. Attach the 250GB drive to your computer through the same USB interface you plan on using to connect it to the PS3. Format as FAT32 with Knoppix, and you will be able to format the entire drive as 1 partition with FAT32. (Unlike WindowsXP's artificial size limit for FAT32.)
Just be careful not to reformat your computer's main drive, unless you want to do the smart thing and rid yourself of Winblows.

I also remember mention about some vapor (currently) hardware that would allow a full-size 3.5" HDD in an external case that would match the PS3 profile. (If any of you are ex Amiga500 owners, think like the GVP A530 HDD & accelerator side car.) I would really like something like this to hit the market, and if I had the right contacts (and skills) I would consider developing this myself on the 3rd party market.
