PS3 accessory: CRGM-BK2 from Century, hook any SATA HDD to your console - Image 1If you find yourself gasping at the fact that you've got no more space left on your PS3 console, don't worry. With the latest accessory from Century, the CRGM-BK2, you can easily upgrade the space with any SATA HDD.

This cable will let you connect any 3.5" SATA HDD to your Playstation console with much ease. Now, having limited memory will be a thing of past. All you have to worry yourselves now is what things will you be putting in the external drive.

But, don't go jumping for joy just yet. There's a slight setback with this gadget. Do take note that the this is far from being the best solution ever, since you'll still need to find a power source for your HDD in order to make everything work.

Given that, we're sure some of you will be able to find it in yourselves to appreciate this simple accessory. After all, it's better than nothing. Do check up on QJ for more updates!

At least not for me. Too much of a hassle. There's already 320GB laptop HDD's in the market and I doubt I'll be needing much more than that on my PS3 and if I do I'll use a real external HDD as oppose to having a wire hanging out of my console. What would come in handy would be a firmware update that would allow you to partition the HDD however you want for your secondary OS, instead of making you choose 10GB for one or the other.

You forget a couple things with your comment.

1. Price factor. Those drives are more expensive then 3.5" drives.

2. Using an external drive for everything would be a pain on the XMB level.

There are "needs" for this. Plus one good advanage would be removing the massive HEAT source that is the internal HDD.

There's no need to use profanity everytime you talk lol...chill out man. Anyways, I agree with you. The internal HDD does produce a lot of heat when it is spinnign its fastest. However, this is still somewhat unappealing as the HDD will have a power cord sticking out from it. It's very unattractive so to speak. I'd rather just get a real external HDD, like a small one, maybe 160GB to plug into my PS3's USB port.

In regards to cursing....HAHAHA!!!!

Anyway, what are you referring to when you say "a real external HDD"? You CAN use a REAL external HDD with this. Look for an eSATA solution over a USB solution. However it's better then a USB version as you get to plug directly into the SATA bus. WAY MORE SPEED. The power cord would go from the external HDD to the wall. It has nothing to do with the PS3 and it would still be needed for this "real external HDD" solution you speak of.

Also, the whole argument about not having a cord running from the PS3 is 100% bogus. If you decide to use a normal USB external solution you still have a CORD going to the PS3. If one is ugly to you then so is the other so what does it mater?

If you are referring to a solution that only uses the USB 5v for power then again your argument will be moot as those drives are under powered and can not compete. Apples and Oranges.

What would have made more sense was having this solution:

1. Reach the edge of the PS3 case so it looks like nothing more then a normal plug on the PS3.

2. Instead of having a cable run from the device, just put an eSATA port on it so we can plug into it ourselves.

Other wise in order to use your existing external HDD solution just get a SATA to eSATA converter.

if your concerned about the aesthetics of this set up just back up all the info on your ps3 using the back up facility onto an external hd, get a 3.5 and stick it in the bloody ps3 then restore, bang!!! 250gb ps3, no wires sticking out, all hunky dory!!

my mates got a 250gb ps3, cost him £60 for the hd. i will be doing this when i get the cash!!!

he uses "WTF?!?!?" every time he posts;

as far as this "solution" some people just feel the need to do things because they can. if your using your ps3 for gaming/movies/music - normal use - then there's no real benefit to this especially as far as aesthetics are concerned except for the speed but how fast do you really need your movies/music to load? if it aint broke.... on the other-hand if you are experimenting with linux, or pirating......that's a different story

Download Knoppix and burn onto a DVD. Reboot your computer using the Knoppix DVD as the boot device, voila Linux. Attach the 250GB drive to your computer through the same USB interface you plan on using to connect it to the PS3. Format as FAT32 with Knoppix, and you will be able to format the entire drive as 1 partition with FAT32. (Unlike WindowsXP's artificial size limit for FAT32.)

Just be careful not to reformat your computer's main drive, unless you want to do the smart thing and rid yourself of Winblows. ;-)

When the PS3 first came out, I seem to remember several DIY threads here about just this.

I also remember mention about some vapor (currently) hardware that would allow a full-size 3.5" HDD in an external case that would match the PS3 profile. (If any of you are ex Amiga500 owners, think like the GVP A530 HDD & accelerator side car.) I would really like something like this to hit the market, and if I had the right contacts (and skills) I would consider developing this myself on the 3rd party market.
