As if it weren't enough that we're still trying to get (an official) confirmation of the 40GB PS3 unit, more rumors are already popping up all over the place like white on rice. The whole rumor mill is engulfed in these flames.Just earlier, we reported how the UPC database had pretty much already confirmed of the existence of a PS3 40GB unit. Now, it seems as if there's some new development in this whole 40GB rumor.
Apparently, Play UK has a product listing for the 40GB PlayStation 3 unit as well. It's still "Coming Soon" but you can tell them to notify you once the item becomes available already. Once it does, the online retail store will only be able to make it available to residents in the UK.
Though an interesting detail about the console having only two USB ports was there, what really caught our attention was this footnote (bold font and italics replicated from product page):

Say what? Specifications supplied the manufacturers? They actually have it? Could this be an indirect confirmation already? Whatever the case though, we're still notching this up as a rumor. Well, rumor of a rumor, actually. Because the 40GB itself isn't confirmed yet. So, before the PS2-compatibility issue gets confirmed, the 40GB itself has to be confirmed. Oh, October 12, can't you big bang into the scene any sooner?

how would that be even possible? it BC works with an emulation software, how is it possible to cut it off? "aaahh naaaaah hirai-san i dont want to implement BC into FW update of the 4o gig version, i want to get to my family, lets cut it off" o__o ???
yea QJ writers post pointless rumors that just make no sense. Why would they not include a software which is built into the firmware??? if this happens 40 gb users will have different firmwares then the 20 gb 60 gb and 80 gb ps3s and that makes no sense and also i doubt it cost them a half a penny to implement something which is already in existence in previous firmwares.
The only way I see this as possible is if they mean its not hardware BC. That or if for some strange reason it doesnt play DVDs.

I will do it like this it's easier for me. - 120 millions gamers as the PS2. (mix casual and hardcore gamers) - 11 millions gamers has an X360. (mostly hardcore gamers) - 11 millions gamers has a Wii. ( casual + child gamers) Sony says that they will strongly support the PS2 for 2 years. To hold the Ps2 owners a little longer on that system. Why? because the PS2 is the biggest X360 competitor. Why? Because Microsoft ultimate goal is to make the transition from the PS2 gamers to X360. Does it work? Yes... BUT! with hardcore gamers only. For being an hardcore gamer myself, I think hardcore gamers doesn't care about the machine or the price of it. All they care is about to have the best games possible to date in there house right NOW!. Sony has made a test with the 60gig model. Just to be sure that the price was the problem. And what was the result ... Sky rocket sales for June and July. But who brought the PS3 60gig cut down version? Sony knows. Why? well when you buy a PS3 and go online (FREE) there's a survey you have to do first. Like, what's the primary use of your PS3 and what other consoles you have etc. So they know if you have an x360, a Ps2, both etc. Does the x360 owners had brought the cut down 60gig..Hell NO!(hardcore gamers doesn't buy a console with no AAA games) It was the PS2 owners who want to continue with the Playstation brand and thought it was a good deal. The reason why the rush for the 60gig went down so fast was the price. It was still to expensive for PS2 owners. NOW do you know what will happen with a 399$ model .(with ps2 backwards compatible ...emulation allo!..maybe) PS2 owners will finally realize that 399 will be the final price and they will gradually shift to Next-Gen systems. But what makes Sony think that PS2 gamers will by a PS3? Because everybody know that when somebody was happy with a previous brand there's 75% of chance they will continue to buy it. What happen with the Hardcore gamers...Well I think that half of the X360 owners will by a PS3. Because they will eventually not be able to resist to an AAA PS3 game sooner or later. And there's plenty in 2008. In the end the 399$ version will gives Sony what they want....blu-ray wins and PS3 sale increase . PS: I need some good players for MK2 on PS3 and MK3 for X360. I work at a Kmart Department Store and I can confirm that the 40 GB model is on our system as of yesterday!! Don't believe me, call a local Kmart store and ask for a price check on a UPC number 711719800606 and ask for the product description. It is a PS3 40 GB Spiderman Bundle.
If makes no sense if BC is using only software emulation....unless they cut down on the amount of flash memory in the 40GB's....but I doubt it and it would be very strange...
The newer PS3s still use SOME hardware emulation, just not the Emotion Engine component. I think is uses the graphics chip from the PS2 or something. If this is true, it makes a $399 price seem possible for a cheap company like Sony. I don't think I would buy one (assuming I didn't have one) though.
Here is a little info to back up SolidSnake5986 post. The 40gb PS3 is official here is a cool site www.upcdatabase.com that has a data base on UPC numbers and if you plug 711719800606 will will see that it is officially listed as 40gb PS3 . And it has SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT OF AMERICA address. May be we can bug them to force a remake of FFVII . Just kidding but there are other listings with prefix 711719 (345) items to be exact.
