Problematic PS3's Successor?

PlayStation 4Would you believe that prior to PlayStation 3's release on November 17, suppressed mention of an alleged PlayStation 4 are already circulating? We know that with the success different next-gen consoles are getting lately, it is inevitable for the PS3 to have a successor. It's just rather amusing to know that leads are coming from Sony officials themselves.

Phil Harrison, the President of Sony's Worldwide Studios, unwittingly gave a hint as to where Sony is heading when he mentioned, "I would be amazed if the PS4 had a physical disc drive." The PlayStation 4 is expected to arrive between seven to ten years from now and it seems that the plan is to go complete digital by then.

With this in mind, several immediate concerns arose within the gaming community. The only way to use a console without a drive is via the internet very much like what they have with the Xbox Live. Game distribution may be greatly affected because it would take eternity for standard home internet connections to finish downloading game.

It is clear also, that with this kind of console, backward compatibility is forsaken. Old games might be made available online but that is exactly the point, our old collection going down the drain.

Should Sony still be in the gaming industry by then, only time can tell. We know PS3 is just about to bask in the limelight, but for PS4, maybe we can just ask Sony when November 17 arrives.
