Probing deeper into the PS3's online services |
Ó
Okay, so we've already basically given you the lowdown on what to expect from the online service of your PlayStation 3. But apart from those already mentioned, such as the online shopping feature and web browsing, we have here additional tidbits that would get you more familiar with the PS3's online features.First off, we're sure you're already aware that it will be powered by Linux, for you to enjoy the internet world to the hilt. So obviously, it allows you to browse through the net. But that, my friends, is just the tip of the iceberg. With individual user identities for browsing and online play, you'd simply have to select your profile, load up your personal preferences (bookmarks and individual friends lists included), and voila! Jumping from Google to wherever else becomes hassle-free.
Now, apart from that, you'd also be glad to know that text messaging is not the only thing your PS3 can do for you, in terms of actually communicating with your pals. With each PlayStation Network account, there's a unique ID that allows you to text message, AND even have voice and video chat with your friends. Although, the accessories for that would have to be bought separately. But what the hey... At least it's capable of giving that service, right?
So there you go. It really looks as if the PS3 is out to be the one-stop-shop for all your gaming and online needs. Let's just wait and see if it could actually deliver all these goodies.

1st post reserved from idiots.... sorry guys wait for the next one.
Sony has a low standard for innovation.... does that make them bad? Not really. Here we really see a classic example of Sony watching what works and trying to improve on it. Each company brings their own spin to the table. If their pricing scheme works well with gamers do you think Mirosoft will spin off on it? ***** ya they will! That's how businesses work. When it comes to the motion sensing controller however, im not so sure it's the same case. With Nintendo they are an extreme innovator. While Sony seems to be more of a "tried and true if it aint broke dont fix it" kinda firm. Sony half assed the motion sensing, and Im ok with that. I am not ready to invest 600 for something im not sure will work well or not. I am willing to invest 250 though, and will. Sony knew this. More interactivity with games is a step in evolution for gaming. Online game play incorporating voice chat and messaging is also a step in evolution. XBOX was not a true innovator with using voice chat. Ever heard of Teamspeak? How about Ventrilo? Yeah I was talking on VOIP type systems long before XBL. It's all about the evolution of gaming. Don't slander Sony for taking a necessary step, congratulate them because they are helping push the industry forward. Ludikhris
Kudos, on preventing the idiotism from spreading.
it's all old news....
Hrm, guess what TeamSpeak, etc ran on... You guessed it Windows! MS is a huge innovator and they will continue to be as the 360 pushes forward. Voice & Video Chat are already happening on the 360 like it's second nature, same with text messaging. And what makes it work is that it's all unified. While playing a game I can voice chat or video chat with someone who isn't even playing the same game. Also I can read messages and reply without getting out of my game. Lots of the "little things" that make Live a huge step over what Sony is purposing. I hope SOE the best of luck because competition is good. But please, don't slam MS for not being innovative because they are doing it all the time.
Ummmm... Sony's innovating with their online? -How come they don't have unified online gaming? (Each dev has to use a third-party middleware like GameSpy or XFire to actually connect) -What about chat across games? (Yes, there may be chat on the base network portion, but there will be no chat across different titles due to varying services.) So no, Sony's network doesn't really deliver anything this article gets excited about. You can't really do much for chatting, and it doesn't really do gaming at all anyway (again, gaming is done through middleware just like it was on PS2, only this time you also have a Live-style Gamercard on a central server).
As long as it appears to be a unified service who cares? Can't do much with chatting? I think you need to update your info. SOny has pretty mcuh everything LIVE has and its free.
Sony is good at making hardware, and bringing developers on board. That is what they did in the past and want to do in this generation. Unfortunately, Sony and Nintendo lack experience in software developement, and microsoft has been creating software for more then 3 decades. Microsoft will always be a step up above Sony and Nintendo because Microsoft is first a software company and they are day and night working on improvements to software. The true innovation will come in 2007 with the LIVE ANYWHERE. this feature will blow Sony's and Nintendo's minds. Microsoft will present a true unified service that extends from your 360, to PC, to mobile Phone. All linked together through MSN messenger,xbox.com,xbox live, pc, mobile and your xbox 360. These new features are going to be truely amazing and i think will give Microsoft a slight egde in the next generation. I believe this generation is all about features, and microsoft is creation these feature as a unified service. Xbox live is 4 million strong today. predicted to be 6 million in a year. And when Live Anywhere launches, anaylst predict over 25 million people on the unified Xbox Live service. Imagine gaining gamer points and acchievements to your Gamertag through PC, 360, and mobile phones. This servicestuff will blow
