TGS 2006: PS3

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) boss Ken Kutaragi's TGS keynote speech didn't touch much on the PS3's game lineups. Aside from game trailers for Ridge Racer 7, Final Fantasy XIII, and a few other games, most of the speech touted the console's technological innards and the array of online gaming and networking services it will offer, such as photo-sharing and online-based virtual consoles for classic games.

There was one bit of news that drew much applause from the mostly Japanese crowd. That 20GB version of the PS3? It now includes an HDMI port. And Kutaragi announced that it will now sell in Japan for ¥49,980, down from ¥62,790. Let us do the math: that's €335 from €421, £225 from £283, and about $ 428 from $ 538. In short, in the neighborhood of one Benjamin cheaper!

These euro, pound and dollar equivalencies are for comparison purposes only - these do not mean that the 20GB PS3 will defintely sell for €335, £225, or $ 428. But, if Sony's willing to shave off some yens for the 20GB, does this mean they'll shave off the equivalent amount for PS3s paid in euros, pounds, or dollars?

Thanks to Kherlen for helping us with translating the SCEJ press release!

Update: We've confirmed from other sources that the price drop is exclusive to Japan only. The 20GB PS3 will still retail in the US for $ 499. Both versions will still have HDMI output.

finaly i can stop wondering what the secret thing was, that thay were going to show it TGS that would keep us "excited" til the luanch. it is a little bit a let down for me, knowing that it wouldint do anything for me since im buying the 60GB and also that even if i was buying the 20GB it's only in japan, i hoped it was somthing cool like rumble or MGS being a near launch game (things that would make you jump for joy and can't wait for launch) but i guess any price drop for anyone is good enough

i believe all PS3s have HDMI now, not just the 60gig.

Sony changed there mind and decided to include HDMI 1.3 in all SKUs.

so really, the only thing separating the 20 gig from the 60 gig is the lack of the SD and Flash slots (and 40 extra gigs).

what's that about the "gimped" model PS3 again? it's not so "gimped" anymore.

it's also possible that at the least, the UK may recieve a price cut, as there launch is a full 4 months after the Japan and US launch.

i'm hoping for a US price cut, but if the $500 gig has the HDMI also, i may not get the 60gig version.

the PS3 was a deal before, but now it's shaping up to be quite the steal (for the Japanese at least).

Wow, some good news for the PS3, it's been a while! If this follows through in other regions, then MS has just lost their biggest advantage.

Next gen is gonna be a tight tussle

That is incredible news. Now the 20gb version is actually viable! Now, it's up to you guys to decide if card reader, 40gigs, and wireless built in is worth $100 (I still think it is). But atleast now the 20gb is fully upgradable... and isn't gimped by never having HDMI

why cant the us get a price cut? I mean...its not like US is been made with diff parts or anything like that hell. If anything we are the ones that need to be persuaded into buying it since its so damn expensive. I have a 360 plan on gettin a Wii n Ps3..but really ps3 should consider the US price drop since The japanese market will totally favor them an nintendo with little to no competition with 360 in japan.

I dunno ..just be nice to be treated equal you know lol Japan seems to always get the best stuff and the other countries left to wait n ponder.
