Potential PS3 homebrew exploit found, tests ongoing

Ó

According to PS3Gen, PSP developer Placasoft recently found an exploit for the PS3 which works on firmwares 1.80-1.81. The information was discovered via a leak from some forums, and then disseminated without much knowledge of what the exploit is.

Now, we can't give you much information on what the exploit is because the exploit is still under testing, but it is hoped that the exploit might reveal itself to be one that allows for the use of homebrew on the PS3. As we said, information is scarce, but Placasoft has mentioned in some forums that he will be releasing more information on the matter next week.

While we're waiting though, here's a video of one of the tests of the exploit. As Placasoft mentions in the video, he is trying not to get people's hopes up, so for now, this is just an advisory regarding the existence of the exploit. What it does and what it can do, we shall find out next week.

That was just stupid. Why even post this in the blog?

» He is a dumb cluck

Why u post this, when you haven't find a way to start homebrew?

furthermore, why do u explain, how the exploit works, leak this exploit from another forum and post it?

Now Sony will fix this hole...

» Aha

This is good news.

But it seems it's just like the other exploit.

Booting is possible but no play.

It seems they didn't find open ports yet.

Nice though: This works on EU PS3s. Thus it doesn't "need" the emotion-chip.

» You're Stupid.

It's NEWS regarding the PS3. Listen, if this did lead to some wonderful exploit for the PS3, and QJ had never posted it about it, then everyone would be saying,

"Where was QJ on that? Damn, they're so slow".

And now, they post potentially exciting news about PS3 homebrew and you're upset.

You just can't win with people.

» we can't trust homebrew anymore

homebrew is good, but it always attracts iso and pirates. I

hope sony completely abolishes homebrew. blame the !@#$ing pirates, they ruin the game industry.

» PSP....heheh

dude you ever owned a PSP? so what if they make an exploit, then we'll get to play Shareware DOOM and an N64 emulator running at 7 fps,WOOOOOOHOOO OOOO!!! THIS IS LIVING! Shareware Doom and an N64 emulator are the true reasons why i forked out $600 for a PS3!

There is no way to satisfy. I for one, dont give a ***** what you post, if it peaks my interest good, if it doesnt, oh well I skim it over. People act so retarded nowadays.

by mohaas05 - 2007-06-18 03:10
» ...

its not homebrew's fault, its the people who exploit it. Homebrew is great since it allows anyone to program their own software. Sony supported that idea by giving us linux. however there are some people who use it to rip off the game industry.

by mikey - 2007-06-18 03:30
» um your wrong

well considering the ps3 is probably 200 times stronger then a ps3 im pretty sure after about 2-3 months you will be getting game speeds at 60 fps although some games will have graphical problems at 1st but it def will not be running at 7 fps. and theirs so much more then shareware doom such as vnc which lets you view and control your pc through your psp which if it came to sony would be really cool it would be like having windows on your ps3 which is what im dying for.

by JerseySmell - 2007-06-18 03:32
» Huh????

I thought that exploits or any test by coding outputs a "Hello World". I just saw a screen flicker. WTF! I'm going back to Resistance!

If this eventually works sony will just make an update and will will have to update to connect online.

» Blu-ray

I Hope blu-ray ISO's will never be made possible. With a launch of PS3 homebrew people could find a way to rip ISO's from blu ray discs. Let's hope not. If homebrew will start in a lot of ways it is good though.

by Gd0fgod - 2007-06-18 04:15
» lol

How can a ps3 be 200 times stronger than itself. Sony will add a new update that prevents homebrew and disable PSN for people without that firmware.

People always find a way... This IS going to go somewhere

by Fact or Fiction - 2007-06-18 05:06
» You decide.

Fact: The playstation3 is 200x stronger than the playstation3. Not to be outdone by the playstation3, which is 6x stronger than that.

Fiction: The playstation3 is equal in power to the psp.

by zefie - 2007-06-18 05:22
» Homebrew on Cell

Cell is too complicated. Even Sony is struggling to use it properly, why do you think we don't have standard PSP features like wallpaper yet? Also, no one has made any Cell applications for PS3 linux, such as video encoders, where Cell could be powerful.

Considering all of this, and the difficulty of Cell, exploiting the XMB/Hypervisor is obviously only in the interest of pirates. Even if it was just for an Homebrew emulator, its still piracy, just not PS3 piracy.

Face it, we don't NEED a custom firmware, or exploit for HOMEBREW.

by mohaas05 - 2007-06-18 05:38
» to zefie

thats the most retarded comment ive ever heard. Of course sony can use it properly. them and ibm built it! Otherwise they wouldn't have used it. And second, you don't need to program for cell. Thats only low-level assembly programming used in games. Just like nobody programs in assembly for PSP. And PS3 linux is no different from regular linux. You can program in all kinds of languages for it.

by Valery - 2007-06-18 05:52
» Blu-ray disc ISO

Hate to burst your bubble, but you can already download Blu-ray disc ISOs off certain bit torrent tracker websites. Although a good chunk of them are up in the 10+ GB range.

» At least

At least since it works on the new update this means idiots can stop refusing to update or connect to the PSN for fear of loss of hackability, like I've seen some commentors doing.

"Let's cripple my backwards compatibility so I may in 2 years be able to download some hacked software!"

Homebrew is nice, but I'm not downgrading my PSP for it, nor my DS, and just no way for something as expensive as the PS3

by vincent - 2007-06-18 07:51
» umm

only if you update. this is for fw 1.8 and 1.81 if you stay at those fw's then your good. im at 1.51 lol and i can play online with the proxy bypass

by Blazeking - 2007-06-18 07:57
» placa

Placa didn't even want this info circulated like that in the first place. He even said he didn't want to get people's hopes up and hype up something that might hit a dead end. But QJ and Maxconsole posted it front page... why? Blatant disregard for the author's request NOT to hype this up.

screen flicker is the hello world. He programed the screen to flicker and he installed his own signed .pkg on the ps3. this is great because people can program anything and just convert the format to .elf and .self and have it go inside a .pkg.

of course this will eventually lead to iso's and pirates because .pkg files can be anything. Including a loader.

by hpdarkman525 - 2007-06-18 08:08
» @Eclipze_

Why the fxxk would you want AOL on your ps3...? The PS3 comes with a very good internet browser built in. Not only that, but AOL is a terrible internet service. Furthermore, Windows XP and Vista are very memory consuming and I'd doubt you can expect an emulator for either of them ever. IMHO, Windows 95/98 are probably possible on the PS3.

Sony lets you run Linux on the PS3, which gives you everything you need to do MythTV-type functions (along with a supported USB 2.0 tuner, I suppose).. you can run emulators, etc., etc., etc.

There's no need for 'homebrew' hacks on the PS3 unless you want to pirate warez.

No, thank you.

» Homebrew is great!

Homebrew is among the greatest things you can hope for on a console. thats why i bought an original xbox. tons of homebrew, xbmc and linux. Sony has already made it possible to run linux on the ps3, and to run windows xp on it, all you have to do is install gentoo, compile the qemu sources so they run on the cell and then install xp like normal. but it runs slow, so just use linux. AIM already comes installed on it. have you never heard of Gaim?

by Nicolas B. - 2007-06-18 15:33

» yea but

this is cool but....i dont think i could ever risk my 600 dollar system on a tetris game i could just as easily play on my psp or even my pc. ISOs could take forever to download and grab up way to much space on my hard drive.

i would love free games but no amount of stolen goods would replace the space of the brick i would gain.

Please read this, you will be excited. When you click this link, http://www.cashcrate.com/259011 you will sign up for a website that pays you 2 - 45$ (PER) to do surveys, sign up for trial offers, and test products.

Companies such as ebay pay cashcrate to have people try their offers, and when you complete an offer, cashcrate simply passes the money onto you. By spending an average of 3-4 hours a week on cascrate,

I have made 472$ in April, 412$ in May, and 271$ (SO FAR) in June. You get paid in real checks from "KINGSIDE MEDIA" every month that you earn 5 dollars or more. It may seem too good to be true,

but I assure you it IS true. Also, with their referral program, you can refer people by sending them your link (you get when you sign up) and for every buck they earn, you get 20 cents also! (Think how much money you can make if you have 100 people making five bucks a day)

You do not have to enter your credit card or social security number. Nothing Harmful can come from cashcrate. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 18 OR OLDER, I AM 15 YEARS OLD AND REFERRING PEOPLE, AND I MAKE THIS MUCH MONEY A MONTH

JUST SPENDING A COUPLE MINUTES A DAY ON THE COMPUTER! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR READING THIS.

Think it's a scam? Read this(from the website) "We assure you that this is not a scam! Companies need consumers to try and review products, services, and websites and are willing to pay money to have them do so.

Most of the time you're asked to do this without any compensation, what we do is take the money companies give us for YOUR participation, and give you back up to 75% of it!"

There are alot of websites like this, I have tried almost all of them and this really is the best, and legit one.

There is every reason to find a way to run homebrew natively on the PS3 until Sony opens up the RSX for use inside Linux.

by zefie - 2007-06-19 05:36
» mohaas05

I meant cell-optmized programs that take advantage of the SPUs. Sure you can run standard PPC applications on the Cell but they are slower than a PC because the true power is in the optimized use of the SPUs in parallel with the dual core processor. Regardless of weither Sony is having problems or not, you did not state while Linux is not good enough and why we need to hack the Hypervisor. Give me one good reason that Linux is not good enough, because piracy. And I don't want to hear "RSX" because TerraSoft has already created a mesa using Cell and SPU.

and as soon as a game look better on the 360 they say that developers still havent tapped the piss s 3's potential. well look at the games. if they look the same the ps3 version will have frame rate problems. thats why the 360 versions always look better. the developers have to lower the games graphics in order to make the ps3 version run smooth. face it the ps3 is MAXED OUT! there is NOTHING more a developer can do to make it better!

i dont think pirating will be too much of a problem initialy bcause not too many ppl are willing to fork over $400 - $500 for a blu-ray burner and then pay $20 for the blank disc... but in the future when prices drop it could create a problem for the legitimate homebrew crowd

» Swap disc for PS3 possible?

I used a loader disc for my PS2 and swap the discs when it asks me to. I would think this isn't possible with the PS3 because it doesn't have the flip up top that the slimline PS2's have. Pushing the eject button on a PS3 console kicks you back to the playstation dashboard. How on earth (unless there is custom firmware written to accept backups without a loader disc) will they ever get this working? Are we all going to have to take the casing off our PS3's perminantly?
