Possible RFOM exploit to run unsigned code on PS3 FW 2.10 |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Exploit, Sony
Ó
While the current method is still in its early phase, the hackers (and many members of the community) feel that this is very promising. What makes this hack work is a Resistance: Fall of Manexploit which allows the hackers to run SELF files in the PS3s operating system.
So far, they've already coded a program which allows them to convert ELF files into SELF files. All they need to do is clean up the code to get screen output. Once they do so, they plan to create a "Hello World" program on the PS3.
We're gonna keep a close eye on this in the days to come. While waiting for any breakthroughs, you might want to check out the video of the exploit in action and see the hack for yourself.
Here's a special shoutout to Spiker for the hot tip!

Only thing people are interested in is finding a way to run game backups. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's handier to first run homebrew, then a emulator and then start up the game you have to select from your harddrive. Bullocks and you know it. You just want to pirate games which is fine by me, but don't use any lame ass excuses. What's your next excuse, I want voip? lol.
Linux on PS3 can run a *****load of feautures and if you took a second to learn something about them you'd have a great system.

I want HOMEBREW and back-ups straight from the XMB. I like to test the games before I buy them, demos never give enough, If I like em I buy em, if I don't lets face it I keep em anyway until they are taking up to much space on my computer.
But I like homebrew as well, so its a broad statement to make that everybody who wants it from the XMB JUST wants back-ups they don't not everybody is techinically minded enough to know how to get linux installed or they just simply don't like it, just because you like it don't mean everybody does or should.

By the way, there may be no RSX acceleration, but there is work on getting some acceptable 2D/3D graphics acceleration from the CELL SPEs. Once the driver is finished, homebrew, and even Linux, will be much better quality.

You just want to get free games and that's it. It's fine by me, but don't give me that whining crap of not knowing what to do. If you really wanted homebrew you would have dived into the huge collection of it availible for Linux on the PS3. You are just using Homebrew as an excuse to discuss warez. Nothing more and nothing less.

Also do not tell me that people would not pirate games since they are so big because RFOM is 15GB and people pirate 360 games that are about 9GB.

However you do have a point and it would drive away some developers.

People are so cheap now a days. You say I want to "try out" the game b4 you buy it... But you know that you wouldnt buy a game at the store if you already have it for free lol, thats obvious.

You think installing homebrew is hard? if putting it on the PS3 is the same as putting it on the PSP then its just a case of copying one or two folders. If you find that hard I wonder how you even managed to turn your PS3 on when you got it, let alone install Linux.
I aint whining about anything, I just think a broad statement like you made earlier is wrong, not everybody wants XMB homebrew just to play back-ups, that's not a fare statmement to make, like I said I have no issues about playing back-ups I have and will do the same with the PS3 if the option becomes available. But not everybody who wants it in XMB will.

Like I said above I do tend to keep them even if I don't like them though, just for something to go to when I get bored. When I need more space on my computer they get deleted.

It is a fact, any Homebrew access on the PS3 will lead to an ISO loader :(
Unfortunately for pirates it will only mean that you can run ISO games that were released from the time the PS3 came out, up to now.
Correct me if I'm wrong but in order to play ISO's you still need to be running the FW that the game requires. This exploit runs on FW 2.10 which means any game that requires up to FW 2.10 will work in an ISO loader.
Now,
In the next FW update, Sony will patch this hack making sure Homebrew/ISO loaders do not work. Newer games will then be released using this newer FW, but pirates won't be able to run these newer games in an ISO loader because their FW on their PS3 won't be high enough to run the game. So if they want to play the game they'll have to update - cutting off their access to Homebrew/ISO Loaders.

But in all honesty, I don't want the PS3 hacked. I'm content with it as it is...unless a CWCheat or some other app like custom themes that go beyond .p3t, but like said before: it will all just end up into an ISO loader that will probably cut back on the amount of good games coming to the PS3.

I hope we'll see things like a fake "demo" or something, that, instead, is named like "IsoLoader", and that start the ISOs on the HD. That way, online would be there for our bought games, but we could also play downloaded games.
Still, this would make sony loose a couple of games sales, but I don't think it would really hurt then, I mean, the x360 is hacked, the wii is hacked, and the ps2 was hacked, but they all sold well, lol. (especially the ps2). Anyway you'd need an infinite connexion (internet) for 20-50 gig per game, lol. (or pay some 1-2$ for downloading too much, lol, 1-2$ for a game would still be cool).
Anyway I'd buy the games I relaly love, like the squeenix games, and GTA4, GT5, and some others.

You also have obviously never heard of the PS2 homebrew HDL Server. You can network to a ps2 and transfer games.
Stop being so negative. Homebrew developers are very resourceful people, and you can preach your opinion all you want, but that won't stop and of us, because the fact of the matter is, homebrew is around mainly because the devs see it as a new challenge to take on.

all consoles have had to deal with piracy.
the amount of people that actually know about iso loading (and homebrew) are minimal.
i expect if ps3 was exploited for iso loading and native homebrew support the result would be the same. alot of people would embrace it, but the majority wouldnt even know it exsisted.

same with MGS:PO
same with tekken DR
if MGS had of been as weak as metal gear acid.
the umd would be at the shop still
i own all the umds of the games i like.
sometimes its just easier playin the iso to see if its worth it
why pay $79+(AUD) for a game and relise its crap.

Most games are 360 ports, so the max size for them is 9GB, and the games that are PS3 exclusive right now i dont think they go over 25GB.

There are fifty billion versions and flavors of linux, each one completely different from the others, some amazingly easy to use and some impossible.
Please remember, "linux is a category, not an OS".
