PlayStation Network NOT free...for third party developers

Here's another one to keep the rumor mill running: the PlayStation Network turns out to be not so free after all. It's advertised as free, right? But then if you think about it, Sony's not exactly the epitome of charity-giving, and it IS a business after all. So then, if PS3 users won't pay, Sony won't pay, is it possible that third party publishers will?

This is the scuttlebutt going around among industry insiders, that Sony is planning on charging third party developers to cover the cost of demo downloads. According to these insiders, this is what Sony is allegedly thinking: they won't ask users to pay for demos so that their PS Network will remain "free", but they could charge third party developers for every time a PS3 user downloads their game.

Now, it's too easy to think of this in a "better them than me" attitude 'coz basically, yeah, we won't be shelling out any money for demos. BUT, if third party developers get maimed for every time we download their demos, do you really think they'd still be encouraged to put up a lot of demos in the PS Network? Don't think so. So see, even if we, as consumers, don't pay anything for the demos, the effects of charging third party developers for every demo download will still inevitably go back to PS3 users.

So the end result is (or so it seems, to this writer at least): there will be less demos, and thus, less users on the PlayStation Network. And consequently, Microsoft will be happy because then there'll be more third party developers on Xbox Live. So should we then stick to our 360's if that's the case?

Again, this is just a rumor, and Sony still has to reach a decision about this. But if this does push through, don't be surprised if you find very few game demos and loads of Blu-ray movie trailers on the PlayStation Network.

at best they could charge 3rd party devs for the bandwidth, but bandwidth is pretty cheap.

This has to do with royalties. microsoft does the same thing with every dl on live. it's nothing new.

Uhm, how is a 3rd party company paying to advertise at Sony's network to a captured audience any different than when they buy space for ads at this site and others?

I'm looking at this website now and see ads for Walmart, Verizon, etc. No doubt they pay you guys here at QJ.Net for the privilege, right? You guys aren't running a charity, so why get on Sony's case for using the same model at their online store?

Unless you start allowing free advertising by other companies here, then I say screw you QJ.net hypocrites and the Sony-hate horse you ride to work on everyday. You guys hype negative spin on a story so much it's ridiculous. This story could EASILY be presented neutrally, but you guys never choose that option, do you?

I for one will personally avoid clicking the ad links of any company ad I see on your site and ask other reasonable video game fans to do the same. Let's see how you guys enjoy less money coming in for hosting other companies' advertising.

When I saw the title of the blog post I assumed it was true because in no way does it imply that this is a rumor, it merely states something. It should have a "rumor" in it or a "?" at the end or something.

If you think about it, free demos is the equivalent of free advertising... maybe devs should pay for the service that MS and Sony are providing...

He mentions Gundam like anyone was hyping that up... and nobody was. And you can have fun watching your HD-DVD movies which M$ is trying to push on everyone... too bad you have no HDMI ports on your console.

By the time spring rolls around PS3 will have plenty of titles don't worry, and for now Resistance is plenty of fun.

Bandwidth costs money....millions of people downloading even a 500 mb (let alone bigger if games TRULY need to be bigger as sony says) probably cost's company X 100's of thousands of dollars.

Sure no biggie if it stays free, but as said companies just won't release demos....in which case, no biggie, you get what you pay for....

If the Xbox$hit60 is so great why the hell don't the japanese buy it. Simple they don't like shooters, sadly that is 75% percent of Xbox$hit60 games. Also why the hell do I have to pay 50 bucks a year for online, I could have sworn Microsoft was the richest company in the world and yet they make you pay for online. You buy the game and you buy the console and it is still not enough they want more of your money. Also why the hell do I have to pay 100 Bucks for Wi-fi. They talk about the ability to stream crap from your computer to your Xbox$hit60 but they don't tell you that you need the 100 dollar Wi-fi adapter in order to do so. Also why the hell do I have to pay 250 dollars for an external Hd-Dvd Drive something that should have come straight out of the box. And don't even get me started on their decision to include DVD9 instead of real next gen capacity discs.

Why do people feel the need to bash one system or the other? I own both the Premium 360 and 60GB PS3 and you know what? I love them both. They both bring something to the table that the other can't do. I did not buy the PS3 for online play really cause frankly sonys has alway sucked. I did buy it for the great single player games that they come out with. So i would say if you like online play a lot more, stick with a 360, if you like single player go with PS3, or just get both and stop your *****ing.

As far as the charging developers. How much is this charge? How fair is it? Do the developers have not issues with it because it's a low fee and are probably getting something back in return (advertisement lower than a commercial on TV)?

Time and time again we hear complaints that consumer charging is worse than passing the cost to other companies behind the scenes. Well, Sony is doing that. Maybe you WANT to Sony to charge upfront so that they can't say they don't charge upfront? Why would you want that? Because you are a 360fanboy. LOL! Simple.

Fees boys, fees.... There will be fees for the network, maybe not at first, but there will be. It would kick ass if it would be totally free, but it wont be. For instance, the average game download on the playstation network is going to be roughly $15 dollars. FIFTEEN DOLLARS for a classic 8-16 bit game, whereas xbl highest price is $9. I for one love the arcade on xbl, who can live without Galiga? Granted this is not a fee, but still a higher cost. Where will the cost of upkeep for this network come from? Just some questions..
