Sony has just announced that the launching of PlayStation Home has been del... del... delayed...

Naw, just kidding. Sony's not that cruel.

Open beta for PlayStation Home will indeed push through today, and Sony's in a mad dash to get everything in working order before they finally flick the switches on. (Here's looking at you, trigger: let's hope the servers don't crash as they did with LBP.)

Home community manager TedTheDog has given some last minute updates for all parties concerned, whether you've been around for the closed beta, or if you're going to be a new participant to the Home service. Here's TedTheDog's public message:
  • Technical updates are progressing and as you have probably seen the 1.03 patch is available for existing users already but the service remains unavailable whilst work is carried out
  • Service should be back up everywhere early PM UK time although theres no specific time as theres a long list of actions being worked through in Europe, America, Asia and Japan
  • New comers to the service will find the Home icon on their XMB once we activate it. You wont have to look for it, it will be easy to spot and will appear under PlayStation®Network. However, if you are online on your PS3 when we activate it you will need to restart your PS3 for it to appear. Watch these forums for news on when that is. It will work like Folding@Home in that the icon will be there and you'll download the service when you first select it.
As of writing, there's still no sign of Home going live yet. We'll drop word as soon as it hits. Keep it posted here! We're coming Home!

*Update* Ok, ok. I know I only meant it as a joke earlier, but... could this recent update from TedTheDog mean an actual delay in the launch of PlayStation Home Open Beta? Keep your fingers crossed. TedTheDog's updates appended on his original forum post are as follows:

**Edit 3pm**

Still progressing nicely, now on the testing stage. No eta still as I wouldnt want to guess how long it will take for each region to verify its elements are working but we're getting there.

**Edit 3:15pm**

Not there yet, the testing is still going on, but I wanted to mention a couple of other things that need clarification.

The Far Cry 2 and Uncharted spaces will not be available in our region today as the localisation and testing phase is not yet complete.

They will follow on later. Additonally the Diesel and Ligne Roset content will be added next week at the same time as the Red Bull Air Race.

**Edit 4:25pm**

Testing complete and a couple of technical problems have been found. We need to iron these issues out first and I'm waiting to hear how long that might take (I'm not qualified to even guess, its very technical). Apologies, I know you all want to get in but we must get these things right. And please remember, this is a beta and today is our first step into the Open Beta environment and what we're doing today is part of the beta process itself.

*Update2* More from TedTheDog:

**Edit 5:55**

Apologies for the delay in an update, you may have noticed a PSN outage in the last hour. Things seem back on track now although the outage delayed us a little we are moving again. Hope to have another update soon.

**Edit 8:15pm**

Very sorry about the delay here. The PSN outage really set us back a while but things are picking up again. And apologies for the delay in updates, I had to get home to continue with this. Looks like we're not far off now though.

"Technical updates are progressing and as you have probably seen the 1.03 patch is available for existing users already but the service remains unavailable whilst work is carried out..."

I really wish Sony would just finish everything first before announcing something. It's ridiculous doing it this way.

If there was still work to be done, they should have DONE it and THEN announced it was available... not announce that it WILL be available eventually.

I can't believe Sony didn't run these test and whatever they are doing right now yesterday,

I mean, what is up with prepping the system on launch day ? That is just stupid, and one would think that Sony would know better than this...

by Gino D. - 2008-12-11 04:32
» Prepping the system on launch day...

is common practice. Usually with online patches and huge updates, servers have to be shut down in the mean time.

Not to compare Home to an MMORPG or anything, but in essence, the same process of shutting down the servers prior to a big update also applies for WoW patches and the like. (don't quote me on it though, but that's to the best of my knowledge - I'm not really familiar with the specifics and technical aspects of Sony's and Blizzard's updating processes)

I'm sure Sony's got things in order. *crosses fingers* I know it's hard, but we all have to be patient. I myself am kinda miffed that open beta's not up yet, but what the hey. The light at the end of the tunnel is nearby. I can smell it. I can hear it. I can feel "epic dance off" coursing through my veins right now. LOL

will remain in Open Beta for the remainder of it's life. There will not be another launch of "a final product".

» I agree with chess...

Home isn't going to go gold...they'll eventually drop the beta moniker if people respond to it. If it fails or people think it sucks...they'll simply say, "People didn't respond to the beta". Change it and try again or drop it (not really support it).

» Damn wut a bunch of babies

Even If I wasnt in the closed beta I wouldnt be complaining this much. None of ypou have any clue how technical this is I understand that ppl have been waiting and waiting but patiants please remeber this is a social network if your like this befor its realeased how many of you will be absolutly unpleasurable to deal with when we all meet? calm down we got the date, lets just wait it out.

Normaly I could careless how distastfull things get on the internet or negitivity for that matter its what makes the internet interesting but this is something NO ONE but the very techs at Sony know about You all act like this is some Game launch or like this kinda ***** is easy to push out

If it were that easy to push GBs of Official free software that needs capable servers and and mass launch a worldwide release of a BETA, (BETA, BETA!) among 17+ mill greedy assed PS3 users they'de done it a while ago lets give them the credit in doing so and give ourselves the dignity and credit of waiting without casualty with something you might not even like or use often.

» Pats Back

I agree. This is alot more technical than you would think. And no doubt it will be flooded and crashed within the first few hours.

This is a project I am really excited about but I don't think it's fair how the whole PS3 community is getting mad at Sony that their free software is making them work their asses off to make it right the first time.

by Matt-N - 2008-12-11 06:02
» ...

You've completely wasted your time with that speech.

Of course, I agree with you all the way regarding the amount of work that's gone into it, and I'm grateful to Sony for giving us this for nowt.

Do you remember when Resistance: FoM's first big update was constantly delayed... peoples attitude then was unworldly lol!

I'm in the Closed BETA, but still excited about the Open version :o)

by Musachi - 2008-12-11 06:03
» ROFL

Calm down.... No one said they did know what needed to be done, people here are only saying theses things out of pure excitment + ignorance.... Get a grip dude.....

Anyways I see PSN is bk up but the PS Store is down now.... Hopefully they don't have much further to go....

» LMAO

thanks I know it really much would be a waste but but hopefully maybe, just maybe I may have brought a up a point some angery 13 year old racist (internet gangster racist spam cluless arguments) was realy ready to go to work on the masses and thought to complain about getting free stuff and say " hey that guy may have a point and just hold on the disgruntled comment I was ganna make" or not either was its all about expression I was talki to those who know who they are thats all I think Home is great and I spent hours on it mind you I'm up to my balls in bills wit sometimes little time on my hands with work and other social thingalong with games to play which is def a priority also I still find tim to enjoy Home and its great potential I wasnt dissappointed It could def grow to something great. just watch out for psudo-chicks (men as women) lol ppl like tryin to get nuts off on Home like a 4:10 chick to guy ratio funny as FCK - Xis66 see ya at Home

by Matt-N - 2008-12-11 06:55
» Psudo-Chicks

LOL!

Can't believe how many 'women' are on there. I'm sure there were more female characters in Home Square the other night than actual female gamers across all 3 systems lol.

Nothing funnier than seeing a load of suckers flirting and surrounding a sexy female character called 'Steve123' lol!

[UPDATE] TedTheDog has updated with the current situation, as of 3pm GMT (10am EST): "Still progressing nicely, now on the testing stage. No eta still as I wouldnt want to guess how long it will take for each region to verify its elements are working but we're getting there." Shouldn't be too long now ...

More updates after the break[UPDATE 2] Rut roh! "Testing complete and a couple of technical problems have been found. We need to iron these issues out first and I'm waiting to hear how long that might take (I'm not qualified to even guess, its very technical). Apologies, I know you all want to get in but we must get these things right. And please remember, this is a beta and today is our first step into the Open Beta environment and what we're doing today is part of the beta process itself."

Also, it appears that the Far Cry 2 and Uncharted spaces won't be available in the European beta today. Likewise the new Diesel and Ligne Roset stores, along with the Red Bull Air Race, won't be available til next week. The American beta should include all these things today. Feel free to say mean things about SCEE in the comments below.

[UPDATE 3] Things don't seem to be going brilliantly over at Sony HQ. TedTheDog writes: "Apologies for the delay in an update, you may have noticed a PSN outage in the last hour. Things seem back on track now although the outage delayed us a little we are moving again. Hope to have another update soon."
