PlayStation Home is still comfy in Beta stage

It's been a few months since PlayStation Home has launched, and it's grown quite a lot since then but one can only wonder why it's still in Beta. According to Jack Buser, director of Home, they're not in a hurry to leave Beta anytime soon.

Buser explains that since it's launch, Home is an ever-expanding, ever-changing service. It's still evolving right now as a matter of fact, so it's still appropriate to call it a Beta. And besides, they like the words Open Beta, apparently:

I can tell you why we like the term open beta, and why we've been sticking with it. We really want to emphasize this idea of an evolving platform. What you see now is very different from what you'll see in a few months, and that's very different from what you'll see after that.

[...] For us it's really, really important to drive that message home, even in the name of the product: Home, Open Beta. Come in, check it out, check out what we're offering, but come back! It will be different when you come back.

Other products are changing like this, but it's very very unusual... we've really embraced those words—Open Beta—we're really comfortable with them. We haven't made any announcements about when we'll be moving past them or if we hit a major milestone or anything like that.

[...] It's changing so fast at the moment, so when would something significant happen that would shadow all the other changes, and make it significantly above that to justify making a big fanfare about it coming out, it would be... To be honest, we don't think about it, internally. We have our short-term plans, our updates, we're more focused on getting as much out there as possible.

And they're really gunning to get as much as they can on the services. At GDC, they revealed that they plan to launch at least 3 spaces every month. That's ambition for you. So when will Home leave Beta? Does it matter, really?

» think of it this way...

Gmail. Google Mail. It's been in Open Beta for what, over 2 years?

That's what Sony is doing.

I also must mention that Gmail is the fastest, most accessible email client on the internet.

Also, that "Home lounge" needs to be released now...I thought Home was garbage until Xi came along. Now I just get on and do that.

» it'll come soon.

And by soon, I mean no earlier than May 2011.

» This is hardly surprising tbh

I mean he did talk about this during the Kotaku Podcast at December 30th. For those who missed it, or didn't see the QJ link, here's the 18 minute or so podcast with Jack Buser. And quite honestly, I agree with this points.
