PlayStation celebrates 15th birthday

psone

On this day, 15 years ago, the Japanese saw the launch of the first PlayStation. Ahh yes, December 3rd, 1994, huge day for gaming. While the younger generation wouldn't know how gaming was back then, there was a time when all you've got were two games and no memory card, and you'd still have a blast. Really.

Remember the good old days when you only had a few mild-juggling Tekken characters and hilarious ring-outs in Toh Shin Den? I think it took me two months playing the first Resident Evil before asking my folks for a memory card. They were like, "A what? Memory card? For that thing?" Back then, I couldn't properly explain that games needed a memory card, especially since I've had SNES games that were perfectly capable of saving on their own. Those were the days.

Don't worry, I'm not gonna go PlayStation History 101 on you guys. For that, SCEI has this cool site up to celebrate the milestone, and it comes with a timeline of all the big dates in the life of the brand. It's mostly in Japanese, but you can still make some sense out of it all.

Anyway, forgive this writer for going all nostalgic on you, but I'm sure a lot of you have your own PSone memories, share as you please.

I remember the PS1! It was a great system! Remember those old game cases that were black and about 2-3 times thicker than a regular DVD case? Then they switched to smaller compact CD cases after a while.

Don't have my PS1 anymore, but it wouldn't matter cause I really wouldn't play it now.

Just love the classic PS1.

I have 3 PlayStations :) (5 counting my PS2 and PSP)
One is hidden away and the other two are still hooked up at other people's houses so I have something to do while I'm there.

"i remember playing FF VII for almost a month straight"

I checked my mem card and my FFVII data says I have played for 203 hours, 44 minutes and 36 seconds (not including the 4 times I started over from the beginning) I need to get rid of it or I may end up playing through again!

Man I can still remember those days trying to get all my license in Grand Turismo, getting pissed at Ruby Weapon for kicking out 2 of my party members, running around shooting zombies, while trying to save Meryl. Funny thing is, after so many years, some of those PS1 games are still played with the same hardcore passion :D. Congratulations PlayStation!!!

# Oh, the memoriesGuest 2009-12-03 14:35
I remember when i first got Playstation, i cant believe its been so long already, it used to rival with my Nintendo 64 and Sega. (Super Mario 64.. Mortal Kombat 2) I remember playing FF VII for months before i even got a memory card, i always got to the same point and then started from the beginning again until i finally got a card and went through the game. Haha, i didnt know much about memory cards then, since cartridges were so popular. Anyways... cant forget other games like FFVIII and FF IX, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Croc, Twisted Metal, Dino Crisis, Tekken, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, and many more...... I miss those days.

I remember taking ages to open a door on Resident Evil whilst zombies come after you.

Tony Hawks pro 2, tekken 3 and driver 2... so many good games :P

oh and them massive CD cases that never fitted on any CD/DVD rack, and wired controllers! I got wireless ones when I bought a PS2 cause my dog kept on tripping over the wires.

I didn't get my Playstation til '97; for a few weeks all I had was one of the demos that came with it, played the hell out of the Ridge Racer and Blast Chamber demos. Then I managed to beg my mom into getting me Wild Arms, still a kick ass RPG to this day. I'd wake up at the crack of dawn nearly every morning that summer, to get in the most gaming. The SNES has a special place in my heart, and so does the original PlayStation.
