Clear the route: After each lap, your timer resets, but objects you knocked down will remain where they fell, so you can spend your warm-up lap moving those things out of the way. With your path much clearer and you have a good grip on the track, you can go on your flying lap and set your best time.
Hang time is slow time: When your vehicle is in the air, your wheels aren't on the ground, and because of that, you won't be accelerating. Keep the height and distance of your jumps as low as you can.
Turn in the air: While you really won't "turn" in the air, you can turn your vehicle while it's in the air, so you could make an abrupt turn as soon as you land.
Nurse that boost: Since the first surge of the boost takes a lot out of the meter, it's advisable to use it on long stretches of road. This isn't NFS, where you can take small jabs of Nos to make up for the speed you lose when you make mistakes or clear hairpins.
Watch and learn: If you want to know how it's really done, download ghosts from the leaderboards so you can see the racing line and style of the guy you want to beat.
Ready to try all that? It's simple enough, and most racing games would tell you pretty much the same things. Now see if you can pull a Lewis Hamilton and snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat. Completely off topic, but poor Felipe Massa...
