PlayStation 3 sales suffer 82% in the UK

PlayStation 3 sales drop by 82% according to Chart Track - Image 1It seems that after the first week of release, PlayStation 3 sales have dropped by 82%, according to the data taken from Chart Track (Chart-Track). Chart Track gathers information from 7000 UK retail outlets such as GAME, Gamestation, and HMV. The total coverage of Chart-Track encompasses 90% of the total software market, which makes its information relatively accurate.

Chart Track was one of the companies which stated that the Playstation 3 had sold 165,000 units within two days of its UK launch. The recently released information regarding the sales drop though came as a big surprise, given the outstanding performance in the first release of the console. To further confirm this information, a spokesperson from Chart Track said to gamesindustry.biz that, "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent." Aside from the drop in console sales, it also released information that the top two PlayStation titles have also taken a hit with Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm dropping over 60 per cent in sales.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has declined to release a statement on the new information regarding the sales of its console. Right now, there is a lot of speculation regarding this information, and people are asking if this is a sign of the market hitting its saturation point, or simply just a hangover from the great opening launch of the system? We'll have to wait a couple of months to find out.

» Duh...

Total shipped to the UK: 220,000

1st week sales: 165,000

amount available for sale the 2nd week: 55,000

82% drop for 2nd week

2nd week sales: 29,700

So they basically sold more than half of what was available for the 2nd week, and I'm sure some places were sold out from the first week.

I would worry if sales were to keep dropping to low levels once Sony starts replenishing.

C'mon, let's say the PS3s sold out the first week, right? What would that mean for the 2nd week without replenishment? ZERO sales!! 100% DROP IN SALES! Geez, idiots... time to unpress that panic button... *rolls eyes*

by The Truth - 2007-04-03 05:48
» Nice theory, but...

Sony IS replenishing units.

» dude

what did you guys expect? people who wanted it.... got it. people who are still buying it probably waited for their whole paycheck to afford it...(i dont know..jsut a thought).

Anyways..... say what you guys want about sales numbers....but i think overall, sales for the ps3 were good considering its was March/April and not November/December.

by the guy - 2007-04-03 06:07
» comment by the dude

Exactly correct with the date, march/april and not November/December, for reasons of a slightly slower sell rate. I'm sure it's no biggie.

» Pointless

Funny thing is this same thing probably happened to the Wii as well since you can be damn sure there wasn't the same amount available or sold the second week it was out in the US.

Wonder where all the negative media spin was for that?

Hastings was right the PS3 can't catch a break from this negative coverage. It's downright disgusting to a point.

by Steve - 2007-04-03 06:08
» Still means 30000 sold...

165,000 sold in opening weekend. An 82% drop off still means 30,000 were sold in the 2nd week. Considering the UK allocation was 220,000 that means another week and the initial allocation will be sold.

by Spooks - 2007-04-03 06:58
» ..

Sony may be replenishing units, but they just aren't arriving at the stores.

In the Gamestation that I work at, we've had lots of interest, and we're waiting for our second batch of PS3s because we sold out of our launch allotment.

We need more units, and fast, preferably.

by hah - 2007-04-03 06:59
» hah

Yawn, of course the PS3 sold a lot less. Like the other poster said, everyone who wanted one got one. The sales will be steady until some big games are released and they will spike again. Would love to see some Wii and 360 sales figures for the week after launch in the UK.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-03 07:00
» totaly expected

Sony made such a big deal about selling 165,000 in 2 days, why aren't they commenting on the 82% drop in sales?

Ha ha, the market is already saturated. If they weren't so hell bent on setting records, they could have limited the supply like in North America, they it could have been a big seller for 3 weeks.

I'm sure other countries will report a similar drastic sales drop.

Common Sense is right again!

Are people still going to call me a moron? probably....

by Derek - 2007-04-03 07:00
» You guys are unbelievable.

I give you all credit on how you take this news. That's solid admiration. Though the drop is significant. Using the basis of, "that's half of what was left" is totally bogus. That isn't how they come up with these figures, if they did that then the data would be rather false on any commercial product launch. They do ratios and equations. People who wanted a PS3 got one, now it probably will trickle till their heavy titles come out.

Sometimes reading the comments on here is just unbelievable. I can see it now; "The PS3 Causes Cancer!" and sure enough you guys would be like, "That just shows how amazing it is, that it's evolving humanity and making part of our cellular body grow rapidly!"

by Kage Maru - 2007-04-03 07:10
» he's arrived... unfortunately

It was only a matter of time...

It's easily said that every console has a drop in sales like this because every console gathers large numbers for launch, sells a lot, then doesn't have anywhere near that number of units available the next week.

It's only because it's cool to put down Sony right now that news like this is actually published. The same happened for 360, the same happened for the Wii.

It's only people like you who think that Sony is doing poorly because of this, and by that a I mean.....

» you act like you expected this, I know I did!

No big games (as you call it) will come to the PS3 until late this year, that is if they aren't further delayed. Motorstorm was the most recent "big" game, and look how that turned out.

I predict sales will continue to decline until that happens. If the games are as good as the hype suggests, they PS3 may finally get some of the sales it so desperately needs.

Playstation Home, Lair, and Heavenly Sword, are supposed to come this fall. Let's see if they can single handedly save the Playstation brand from being the next 3D0.

I'll be waiting.....

The fall is pretty much when 360 and PS3 will be having great games coming out. Just about everything on every platform is getting pushed back at this point to mid to late sumemr and or early fall.

Also Motorstorm is a really awesome game and your "look how that turned out." comment is probably just your view of it based on a demo you played in a Best Buy.

and yes I'd think Home (a revolutionary online community), and the great games slated for late summer and fall will make the PS3 the great system it has the potential to be.

Not that I have anything against it, but Home is FAR from revolutionary. It's basically a cut down Second Life.

by Spector - 2007-04-03 08:36
» Not quite

I think we've all heard the 2nd Life argument, and don't need to be patronized with a link.

So what your saying basically is because Home and 2nd life both have avatars that look like people who can walk around in a world they are the exact same idea. Also that none of the other ideas implemented in Home make it its own thing.

In other words one similarity makes them completely the same thing?

I too would call home revolutionary in what it is trying to bring to a home console. A smilar look to another thing doesn't completely abolish it as being revolutionary.

» oh look, you got registered

So what the hell do you have to ***** about??? Damn, go fuc k yourself and stay off the forums!

ps, three things can't "single handedly" save anything... dumb ass

by OneForAll - 2007-04-03 08:40
» Don't kid yourself.

A drop was to be expected, since those first week sales were mostly preorders for the launch, so everyone who wanted a launch PS3 got one.

You can't blame lower sales on shortages because ANYONE who wants a PS3 today can easily find a store with a PS3. If store A has sold out, they can go to store B near by and buy one. That's why we've seen NO reports of gamers desperately trying to find a PS3.

Sales are much lower now because less gamers want to purchase a PS3 right NOW (for numerous reasons, such as price). Sales will pick up eventually (especially after a price cut), but currently, that's just the way it is and I don't see it improving much over the next few months. :|

Anyways, I'd register a name, but then I couldn't change it whenever I wanted to!! calling yourself mr common sense and talking about the xbox is like pretending you are ru paul and talking about politics... by OneForAll - 2007-04-03 08:54
» Get off your high horse.

If you found the mention of that link patronizing, then that's an issue for you to address yourself.

Getting back to Home, it is evolutionary, NOT Revolutionary (big difference), and the simularities go beyond just avatars within a world, which if you really knew about Second Life you would have been able to appreciate (obviously you did need to be 'patronize' by that link then).

"A smilar look to another thing doesn't completely abolish it as being revolutionary."

Again, stop pretending to yourself that the two are ONLY similar in terms of visuals, you know full well that it goes well beyond that. Hence as I said, it's evolutionary, not revolutionary.

You remind me of those gamers who said the HDD in the original XBox was revolutionary because of "what it brought to the home console". BS, it was evolutionary not revolutionary and Home on the PS3 is exactly the same.

by OneForAll - 2007-04-03 09:09
» Oh Please!

"I think we've all heard the 2nd Life argument, and don't need to be patronized with a link"

Well obviously you DO need to be 'patronize' by that link if you think the only simularities between Home and Second Life are the visuals. At least do some research first before stating such nonsense (i.e. investigate Second Life yourself beyond just looking at the pictures!).

"In other words one similarity makes them completely the same thing?"

One simularity? Please do your research, then return. If that's as much as you know about Second Life, then I'm not going to waste my time explaining it to you when the website is available together with numerous reports about Second Life on the internet.

You remind me of those gamers who claimed the HDD in the XBox was revolutionary because of (to use your words) "what it is trying to bring to a home console". This of course was BS, the HDD in the XBox was evolutionary not revolutionary, and the exactly the same applies to Home on the PS3.

I pretty much expected this. Sales will drop to true levels in another 2 weeks. I think Sony did a good job of delivering the console to everyone who wanted it at launch. Unfortunately you are going to suffer a dramatic fall from grace when you launch a product like this.

I've tried to do 2nd life before and I must say the complexity in it and lots of other things don't seem to be the same between it and Home. If there was a much more user friendly gamer based and such 2nd life I'd say they are the same, but that isn't the case.

yeah, sales dropped, boohoo.

the 'success' of the launch (i call it success as it sold well, but the media seem to want to convince me that it was a failure) shows that the ps3 isn't a white elephant, it's going to sell enough for strong publisher/developer support so who gives?

i makes plenty of sense that sales dropped, i mean a lot of people who could buy one did, and as sony supplied a lot of systems for launch then there will be fewer people disappointed by not getting one at launch. so re-stocking and things has meant that there are fewer available this week and there is a lower demand than last week... it's not rocket science.

but i was staggered by the value 82%, that is quite a large drop, but how many people do you know preordered a '2nd week' ps3 ? how many people do you know who were like, 'yeah i want one, but i will get it in the 2nd week, that makes more sense'... wtf.

i agree, mister common sense you're a bit of a tool. i do'nt really want to go into the whole 'reasons' aspect of my assertion but i'm just voicing my opinion.

there are some fans who really doesn't know any better... they go to ps3 forums to piss the ps3 fans who they know will be there... don't get me wrong fans for all consoles are guilty of this... it's just that XBox fanboys are the worst...

by Gamer - 2007-04-03 19:06
» Yes and no

Yes there are fanboys on ALL sides, but they ALL act the same, it just depends on what's happening at the time. Fanboys like Vietone and Broken_Hero act NO different to Mr. Common Sense. These two are as annoying to 360 fans as Mr. C S is to PS3 fans and they also enjoy going over to the 360 forums to make a nuisance of themselves.

If you're a PS3 fan, you will notice the 360 fanboys more, likewise if you're a 360 fan, you will notice the PS3 fanboys more.

So ALL fanboys are the same. They share the same insecure mentailty and the same type of blind loyalty.

I hate them all equally. :)

» Sales growth

As the UK is a mainly christian country and with it being Easter this weekend, I'm sure will see quite a sharp rise in sales off all systems and software over the next 2 weeks.

We should be able to take these figures and assertain which is the UK's current most wanted console.

The things hindering this are the continued shortage of Wii consoles and the fact that the 360 has been in the marktplace over a year making it feel like less of a new product (there's no fuzzy feeling of being one of the first to own one).

by some dude - 2007-04-03 21:14
» doubt it

Wii was released in Christmas period so therefore anyone who didnt get one had to keep on trying until they did finally get one for their kid which is probably why they are still sold out. Nintendo wanted stock shortages to get the press about how "everyone wants one" (not me).

This is nothing to worry about

by Peter Griffin - 2007-04-03 21:52
» The Economical View

I swear these mods must get their rocks off watching you people fight. Posting news like this (If you can call this news) causes uproar that's plain pointless. It's only logical that sales will take a steep cut due to hardware shortage. If memory serves me correctly, the same thing happened here in the U.S...now what system was that? Oh yeah...ALL OF THEM! Every major system from past to present has had near the same problem due to short supplies. So why call this news? Just to instigate people. It almost makes me wonder if someone is taking some of that MS $$$ in exchange for bad press towards Sony.

Oh and to anyone who says the price of the PS3 is too high, back in 1985 when the NES made it's debut, it packed a hefty $200 price tag, yet it went on to become the greatest console of it's time and perhaps history. Now taking economics from that time period into factor here, the price of the system was equivalent to $590.28 of todays cash, only a few dollars short of a top of the line PS3. Basically what I'm trying to get at is, the PS3's price is right in line with today's economic figures. The price will of course go down once the technology used in the system becomes more mainstream, which we haven't long to wait because BD prices are due to go down sometime after October of this year. I'm sure the PS3 will follow pursuit.

I never knew anybody who paid $200 for a NES. The $200 version came with 2 controllers, 2 games, ROB, light gun, RF and composite AV cables. It was $80 when I bought mine with 2 controllers and super mario brothers. It wasn't a huge seller until the price dropped significantly. If sony could drop the price to reasonable levels, even I might get one. I'll be damned before I buy a blu ray movie though.

» yeah right!!

Come stop this Sony bashing and wait till MGS4 and Final Fantasy 13 do the talking.......exactly like what GT3 did to the PS2 before Gran Turismo 3 came out on PS2 sales for PS2 weren't exactly great when this game came out it raised the bar.

The Wii games are just pathetic look at what NEW games have they released since launch....jack all!! and I've not seen a console to buy in the shop since Xmas either their all sold out the moment it hits the shelf or Nintendo are struggling to get the console to the shops.

360 look how many of the console where sold without a game ending up on ebay....... so many people profiterring from stock shortage. Also look how many consoles were defect with the dreaded ring of light

I think Sony have done the right thing this time and releasing enough consoles and stop these greedy people profiting

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-04 02:07
» somewhat agree

I think the main reason for making supplies plentiful was so they could make headlines. PS3 fastest selling console ever! for 2 days. Just what sony thought they needed to end the constant bad press. The XBOX 360 or Wii easily could have done the same if they waited forever to up the supplies before launching.

People realized the whole scalping thing wouldn't work after what happened in Japan and North America. As an experienced ebayer, I knew I had to get the Japanese PS3 I pre-ordered with Play Asia on the market fast. I made $500 selling a PS3 on ebay when prices peaked the day after launch.

MGS4 and Final Fantasy will be great games because the creators won't release it until it's good. I don't know if they will help the PS3 catch up with the competiton, but definately needed. If sony wasn't so concerned with blu ray and used a processor suited to gaming, they would probably already be out, and the PS3 could be leading. Yes I would have bought one and be defending it here if they made the PS3 a game console. By screwing gamers, sony made me switch to XBOX.

Sony used a strategy for the PS3 thats opposite to what Nintendo used for the Wii..

Can't remember how many Wii's were launched in NA tho.... if i remember correctly they basically almost sold every system launched pretty fast, after that it was the less than 10 consoles per store every weekend thing and even those mostly sold out almost everywhere, I know a couple of people that were looking for Wii's and got one after like 2, 3 months of searching after launch, just last week i went to a couple of video game stores and people were still going in asking about wii stock(obviously they didn't get one that day...)

so demand for the wii is still there

PS3... i'm kinda interested in how its gonna be played out, since they say they make sure there will be PS3's on shelves everywhere

blu-ray's really really stupid right now... but i guess when FF comes out it'll be 50 gigs big right?????

man 80 bucks CAD for every ps3 game... really burns a hole in my pants, especially when most of the games out right now would fit on a dual layer dvd(which a PS2 can read) kinda makes the current games really not worth the change just for better graphics.. just my opinion.. i'm sure some of you disagree

It's not my fault you're stuck playing the same crappy games after 5 months. I understand you're disapointed and angry, but if it were up to me, I would have designed and marketed the PS3 to sell another 110 million. You blame me because retards are in charge of the company.

» Give it up

So why don't you tell us how you used that trick. Is it one of qj's glitches or did you hack the system? I'm waiting.

I'm not leaving or changing the name. Learn to defend your PS3 with facts not low brow insulting. Later on 2 years from now when you only have a handful of decent exclusive games you will wish you listened to me.

» Crow is why Gamer hates fanboys

You're not sorry crow, you're always making an ass of yourself. You should try blu ray.com or one of sony's official playstation forums instead. Then the negative PS3 comments are automatically filtered out so you can say whatever you want!

» Give it up??

Why don't you give it up. I'm the original flaming gay Mister Common Sense, and I love the PS3!

How did you get my name and password? Is this some sort of trick?!

» come on now Crow

Everyone knows Mister Common Sense certainly does not love the PS3.

» No Really...

I AM Mister Common Sense, and I love the PS3 almost as much as I love getting bent (over and taken advantage of from behind).

» Lol

I didn't do this, but I wish I could say I did. XD

Although, it could be MCS trying to get sympathy and attention by acting like his account got hacked?
