The PlayStation 3's power consumption - Image 1

Over at the sust-it.net site, we picked up on an interesting set of numbers that have something to do with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3). First are figures for the PS3's power consumption - 380 watts. While some of the readers here aren't too surprised by the amount of juice the PS3 uses up, the next set proves more ludicrous, as they tell us how much that power translates into in English GBP.

The PS3, according to their readings, will consume £ 0.13 (US$ 00.25) for every two hours of use per day. That doesn't sound like too much, until we multiply that to a yearly total (365 days) of £ 47.69 (US$ 92). To get a better grasp of just how much this would cost if we couple the PS3 with a good TV set, we tried pairing up its figures with an LG "71 HD-TV set - the biggest set we could find at the site.

The results showed that using both will total about 1.4kWh (kilowatts) worth of power consumption, which totals to £1.19 (US$ 2.3) per five-hour session spent playing. On a slightly off-topic note, the PSOne rated the lowest in these graphs, using up only 10 watts per hours, which totalled only £ 1.25 (US$ 2.42) per year.

Power settings were provided for by manufacturers, while money figures were based on average electricity unit tariff.

Just an important detail to keep in mind when the guys in Europe march off this March 23rd to get their consoles - and a perfectly good reason to turn the lights off when they play.

analyse is flawed. They are basing the calculations on the power rating of the PSU (380W), when in fact the ps3 only draws a max of 185-205 watts during gameplay/load.

correct. the 360 also only uses 20watts less then the ps3, whereas most PC's nowadays use more the 200watts.

...

Who here is going to play their PS3 for 2 hours daily! Everyday! You should cut this down to 1 hour daily and when people play for like 3 hours this is made up by the two days they may have missed when away or doing work.

Flawed

380 is peak power of the ps3, just like when you build a pc and your getting a 600w psu to power all your goodies. 600w would be the peak power. The ps3 will use a different power when idle and a different power on load and probably no where close to the peak since it should be given overhead. Not like normally your going to be using the cell at 100%, rsx at 100%, all fans spinning.

....

The best ideal PSU is to have some overhead for consistency issues. If you know all your PC components will be drawing out 500watts when used at the max, then you want at least 600watts in your PSU. Same goes if you have a PC that uses 350watts, your safer to go with a 500watt PSU. The reason you want the overhead is because the rated power is the maximum sustainable output. Imagine using your car at and keeping it just under redline. Your engine life will greatly diminish compared to if you had it 70% the way there. Same goes for a PSU, in order to keep a maximum sustained output, it will stress the components alot more. This is why Xbox360 has issues with the intercooler drawing power from the Xbox360 brick itself. Because its drawing power and keeping the Xbox360 power brick closer to its maximum sustanable power output. PSU are usually rated for I think 100,000 hours of use at full load and thats just an estimate when under controlled conditions. Combine that with the variations in AC voltage to the variations in usage and you can cut that number down really quick.

they really have nothing to do...

What's the f*****g problem NOW! A lots of computers use more power than that. And lots of those computers are running all night just to download stuffs. They can try to make the PS3 look like crap in every aspect possible...but I DON'T CARE! PS3= Best hardware ever made. Next week there will be a new article saying that the ps3 make to much radiation and can cause cancer.

Haha

Lol, most high-end PC's today have 1000w power supplies and are on for a LONG time each day wow a few cents lol.
by - 2007-03-15 17:38:32
exactly

nobody plays 2 hours every single day. have the surveyors considered people work or go to school during the day. 2 hours is probably the most people would play 1 day and they would probably average around 8-10 hours a week. Althought i do hope when Folding@Home for ps3 comes it will turn off the blu-ray and the HDD to save at least some power

Exactly who cares!!!!

We all pay taxes for nothing which we dont really like to so why not paying for the electricity bill when we use our ps3s... at least we enjoy it...

My parents pay the bills so it really doesnt matter to me

LOL

Old sony console uses less juice than new more powerful Sony console...Shock! Ah well looks like we will all be knee deep in polar ice water sooner than we think. Good job my house is 350ft above sea level......Game on!

Wii

Wow, wii uses less power than the GC. I thought it would take alot more... Ps3 won't really be played for 2hours a day everyday, be realistic...
