PLAYSTATION 3 logo changed to 'fit in' |
Ó
For one, no longer does the console shout at you saying it's a "PLAYSTATION 3," but rather now talks to you in a more civil manner with a "PlayStation 3." In fact, the logo also has disposed of its uncanny Spider-Man logo, choosing instead to rely on marketing materials that show "PS3." Of course, Sony did not decide on this on a whim.
Speaking with Times Online, Kazuo Hirai explained the meaning behind the name make-over, saying that it's symbolic of the "reset" that they have given the console. It was, essentially, a representation of Sony "going back to our roots."
On a practical note, though, this is why they changed it:
When you have PlayStation 3 spelt out, the aspect ratio was such that if you wanted it on a billboard it became tiny. It didn't work in terms of visibility.
Nope, definitely can't fit
Right, right. We totally get it. It's sorta like that tall kid at the back of the picture whom you might envy because, gosh darn, he's so tall there's no way the camera would miss him! Only to see in the developed picture that he did not catch the camera and so was cut off the picture from his eyebrows up.
Yes, big isn't always the way to go. Simple is better too.

Worst simile ever. Has nothing to do with height, but with width. Also I am not sure sacrificing looks for readability does much, especially when it only has to do with billboards....which are a standardized size.
Seriously, I know advertising works on a subconscious level....but has anyone really decided to buy anything based on some billboard advert ? Seriously, the internet is where it is at, for gamers....then I would say TV.....definitely not billboards.
I wonder how much they spent on r+d to "learn" this little bit of info.....probably could have kept it the same FONT (not logo) and cut another 10 bux off the price and it would have been much better in the long run.
Worst simile ever? I thought it was pretty good! Made me laugh. Wouldn't of worked if they said "It's sorta like that stupidly out of proportional fat kid at the back of the picture whom you might envy because..." now would it?
Anyway...I did notice that the original logo had pretty much, if not the same, text style as the Spiderman logo but it didn't really bother me. I thought they changed it to PS3 because it's the slim version. The original Playstation slim was known as PS1 and Playstation 2 changed to PS2 when it went slim as well. I thought Sony changed it to the shorter version as it fit the whole idea of the console being smaller and so the name would be smaller too. Am I wrong?
Looks like fish swim in the sea
Actually the previous logo was much nicer, and much better then that ugly green X on the Xbox. The Wii's logo is also ok.
you kinda got to wonder why they didn't put it verticle(if thats how you spell it) like the new (FUGLY!!!!)PS3 logo...I am pretty sure that it would fit
In the upcoming ps3 firmware 3.0 it includes a new bootup screen containing the new ps3 logo check it out in the video below.

I guess after his departure from Sony that they wanted to erase his influence from this gen's console.
Since "Dr. X" could be the "Xbox", they made Playstation 3 into Spiderman...? Sony owns the movie franchise after all.
not a big deal, I don't take into the whole "shiny" "Spiderman PS3" logo and all that. I chose my console based off some hardware features and what it adds for me and my tastes. If the slim came out with 3 SD slots, 4 USB slots and BC like the original 60GB, i'd sell mine instantly for it due to it being newer and producing less heat.
Besides, I like both logos tbh, it's just the slim just doesn't look as great.
