Guys who were expecting to see the PlayStation 3's latest firmware update within the next few days may want to check their console right NOW, as FW 1.82 has been (quietly) uploaded on the net.
An expected update FW 1.82 will carry is AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) playback support, as detailed by PlayStation Network Operations Director Eric Lempel. That's it for the moment, given that North America and Japan's PlayStation sites haven't posted any info on 1.82. Keep posted as we pick up more details, and hopefully a changelog.
UPDATE:
We found a Japanese list of the changelog over on Japan's PlayStation site. The changelog they've posted confirms AVC High Profile support, as well as one other detail, which we're listing below in all its Google-translated glory:
PlayStation of the part in PS3 and operational status of the PlayStation 2 standard software were renewed. < The private search sight > with you can verify up-to-date operational status.

you've been surviving without it right? it's not like they're charging you for firmware updates that babies like you feel like complaining everytime an update comes.

Seriously, they should try to target the largest amount of PS3 owners with the update to give something to everyone! Where is the DivX support for instance ? Everyone wants it!

2nd, How is it you people are epxecting something glorious from a simple 1.81 to 1.82 update? Just be patient. Sony is probably aware of what you want, in fact, the reason why they have dominated so long is that they give the consumer what he/she wants.
Instead of deciding what the consumer wants for the consumer.

I saved $450 by keeping my PS2 and laughing at PS3 owners."
The PS2 hardware is built into US systems, moron. I've yet to run into a PS2 game which doesn't work.

Also. I'd like to point out that in 4-5 years when the PS3 slim is released, Mr Common Sense will be right there to say how unnecessary it is. Then he'll go masturbate in a corner.

The same one that had to ask his youth pastor if Transformers was okay to watch because "machines turning into other machines might be an affront to the Lord".
Oh, yeah, and the same one who's never actually kissed a girl because he thinks there's trolls living in girls' mouths who bite off tongues and other body parts.

We reencoded DVD and HD-DVB cuts the whole time for MP4-AVC Level 4.1 in MP4-Container and it worked.
They should better add ASP-Support for DivX or NeroDigital like all new SA-DVD-Players have it by default.
At moment PS3 is a lousy MediaCenter.
