PlayStation 3 Firmware 1.80: Unable to solve PAL backwards compatibility problems

Why, Sony? - Image 1Many of you guys are probably enjoying the PS3 firmware 1.80 already, but life would've been better if PAL owners got their backwards compatibility problem fixed. Sony promised to make up for the lack of Emotion Engine from European units with software updates, but it looks like now is not the time yet.

Kotaku claims that they sent SCEE an inquiry about changes on PAL backwards compatibility, and here's what they got:

This upgrade focused on upscaling and there were no significant backward compatibility enhancements. As we have pointed out on many occasions, our engineer's focus is now on innovative applications and services for PS3 and not B/C, so you are not going to see major changes in future updates.

What happened to the promise of more playable PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games for the PS3? We'd love to hear Sony's answer to that.

Kotaku are incorrect and you are incorrect. Aren't you supposed to be a PS3 site? You should know these things, check it up for yourself instead of spreading the Kotaku *****.

The 1.70 Firmware added support for MGS2 and broke MGS3 support.

The 1.80 Firmware fixed the MGS3 support and added several titles like ZOE 2. Dead or Alive 2 and Viewtiful Joe also added. Other people report that more of their games work as well, they aren't specific however.

I myself still have problems with Jak X (wont start) and Rachet: Gladiator (graphical problems).

why are people worrying about B/C they gave us a huge enhancement MANY had been crying for, by 2008 I think most of the PS3 owners will stop playing their old games as there are a whole bunch of great games for the PS3 will be out by years end. Till then I build up my Blu-ray library.

# not a hater but.....Guest 2007-05-26 18:41
I updated to 1.80 rather early in the morning on wich it was released. And after the dl finished, wich i chose to scan the internet for from the XMB menu, I ran the update as Ive done a few times before, the PS3 restarted. But when it did, I had no sound. Few moments later, it froze in the menu. Called Sony, and i have to pay them at least $150 for them to send me a postage paid box. This was after the nice guy on the phone, tired to run me threw a few options, but it froze before we could finish any of them....I'm not hating, or flaming sony.... just trying to find some others who had a similar problem....I cant believe I'm the only one.

# wrong statementGuest 2007-05-26 19:30
This statement is wrong, many europeen forum and specialy french one (as I am french) report significant improvement at the BC level for the 1.80 firmware.

Look this site also about BC (www.ps3comp.com)

# warranty claimGuest 2007-05-26 20:25
pissed off: Your warranty should still be valid with the store you bought it (or sony) and as long as you haven't done anything to void that you should not have to pay anything.

Just go back to the store, they should replace it right away and if they dont you should cause a scene.

it's not just wrong statement, it's total FUD

before claiming "Sorry PAL, No Backwards-Compatability Relief", there wasn't a single game they posted that didn't work... all they pointed was that BC site that's most likely not even updated on monthly if not weekly basis

i was even surprised that they added smoothing in the update

not to mention the option of enabling FULL RANGE RGB!! under Display Settings

If ppl were crazy enough to trust Sony on the b/c issue and bought the Euro version then you were just stupid. Since when does Sony tell the truth about anything PS3? I bought a US version and it's playing all my PS2 titles great.

Ppl should send a message to Sony and boycott the castrated version and strictly import the US/Japanese versions.

Sony screwed Europe *big* time. XP

# Blu-RayGuest 2007-05-26 23:41
That's true, although were even also improvements in BC, the 1.80 update was meant for media and video playback.

The videophiles at the AVS forums have gone crazy over this update. Some even elected the PS3 as the best all-round DVD and Blu-Ray player available in the market.

Everywhere else I read (apart from Kotaku and QJ) people keep saying that BC has been significantly upgraded.

Besides, it's easy to bash Sony for it but we all know that the PS3 (PAL or not) has the hugest last-gen library.

Has anyone tryed changing turning on the RGB Full settings and Super white settings in the settings/display menu, for yous with HD sets out there it could make a huge difference to the picture quility, I noticed it as soon as i turned it on, but really noticed it when I played Resistance.

# HDMI and DVDGuest 2007-05-27 04:59
One more thing which works now, is HDMI seems to be fixed with my Westinghouse. Before I gt lost syncs all the time (picture flickers), don't know it this is fixed with 1.80 or was fixed before, but now, in combination with the upscaler, I can actually watch my DVD collection. And the quality is impressive (besides it makes a crisp clear 1080p signal also in game mode).

LOL dont bring the PS3 down in hardware. COmpared to the x360 it can withstand more pressure.

The customer service is regardless of what you say much more satisfying that xbox's could ever be.

# PS3 BC better than Xbox 360 and Nintendo WiiGuest 2007-05-27 05:29
Wii BC is only one generation back (The Gamecube) they make you pay for N64 BC (10.00 for each title), SNES BC (8.00 for each title) and NES BC (5.00 per title.

The PS3 goes back two generations (PS2 and PS1); you don't have to rebuy games that you have already purchased. I'm happy that Sony isn't charging 10.00 per title for PS1 games. It's free. And if you missed out on any PS1 titles; like the smash Hit Syphon filter; Sony has it available for 6.00 (4.00 cheaper than Nintendo Wii's BC titles for the N64)

Sony is by far the better value in the long run and has fantastic BC with PS2 and PS1 which they should be very proud of.

Have fun paying 10.00 for what were once n64 cartridge based games that you may still own but must pay for them again in order to play them on your Wii.

To Date 1,782 of the 2,451 (SCEE region) Playstation 2 titles are 'working'

you can find the full list here on Sony's website -

http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/bcGames.htm

That's 1400 more titles than the Xbox 360 has available which is only 300 titles.

Flawed comparison, as all nintendo systems prior to gc are cardridge based, cant expect them to just add cardridge slots for all of m right? + Sony also sells ps1 titles over psn.

I also had that problem shortly after updating my launch PS3. I was able to talk them out of the $150, but damn! It's under warranty and unmodified. I should be getting my repaired PS3 back in 2 weeks they said.
