PlayStation 3 Firmware 1.80: Unable to solve PAL backwards compatibility problems |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: SCEE, Sony
Ó
Many of you guys are probably enjoying the PS3 firmware 1.80 already, but life would've been better if PAL owners got their backwards compatibility problem fixed. Sony promised to make up for the lack of Emotion Engine from European units with software updates, but it looks like now is not the time yet.Kotaku claims that they sent SCEE an inquiry about changes on PAL backwards compatibility, and here's what they got:
This upgrade focused on upscaling and there were no significant backward compatibility enhancements. As we have pointed out on many occasions, our engineer's focus is now on innovative applications and services for PS3 and not B/C, so you are not going to see major changes in future updates.
What happened to the promise of more playable PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games for the PS3? We'd love to hear Sony's answer to that.

ALL my PS2 games work fine, even their online modes work now for all of them.

The 1.70 Firmware added support for MGS2 and broke MGS3 support.
The 1.80 Firmware fixed the MGS3 support and added several titles like ZOE 2. Dead or Alive 2 and Viewtiful Joe also added. Other people report that more of their games work as well, they aren't specific however.
I myself still have problems with Jak X (wont start) and Rachet: Gladiator (graphical problems).

Just go back to the store, they should replace it right away and if they dont you should cause a scene.

before claiming "Sorry PAL, No Backwards-Compatability Relief", there wasn't a single game they posted that didn't work... all they pointed was that BC site that's most likely not even updated on monthly if not weekly basis
i was even surprised that they added smoothing in the update
not to mention the option of enabling FULL RANGE RGB!! under Display Settings

Ppl should send a message to Sony and boycott the castrated version and strictly import the US/Japanese versions.

The videophiles at the AVS forums have gone crazy over this update. Some even elected the PS3 as the best all-round DVD and Blu-Ray player available in the market.

Besides, it's easy to bash Sony for it but we all know that the PS3 (PAL or not) has the hugest last-gen library.

The Sony Rep is probably very uninformed. Or... its an OLD quotation which is spun into pure attention waking bull*****.

The PS3 goes back two generations (PS2 and PS1); you don't have to rebuy games that you have already purchased. I'm happy that Sony isn't charging 10.00 per title for PS1 games. It's free. And if you missed out on any PS1 titles; like the smash Hit Syphon filter; Sony has it available for 6.00 (4.00 cheaper than Nintendo Wii's BC titles for the N64)
Sony is by far the better value in the long run and has fantastic BC with PS2 and PS1 which they should be very proud of.
Have fun paying 10.00 for what were once n64 cartridge based games that you may still own but must pay for them again in order to play them on your Wii.

you can find the full list here on Sony's website -

That's 1400 more titles than the Xbox 360 has available which is only 300 titles.

Wii BC is only one generation back (The Gamecube) they make you pay for N64 BC (10.00 for each title), SNES BC (8.00 for each title) and NES BC (5.00 per title.
