Sony has just provided more details regarding the PlayStation 3's upcoming Firmware 1.6 update. First up is a minor adjustment for the update's release date. Previously set for a March 23 release - the same day as the PS3 launch in Europe - 1.6 will be available as downloadable content come March 22.Moving on to FW 1.6's updates, it has been reported that it will allow the PS3 to do other functions while you're downloading content - expect far less game session interruptions in the near future. Sony's also adding an option for a full-size keyboard on the system menu, which should make text input easier for those uncomfortable with the PS3's default cellphone-style interface.
Firmware 1.6 will also carry updates for the PS3's web browser, which includes a capability to detect the user's video-out settings and to set standard font sizes accordingly. Also new is a point-and-zoom feature for examining web pages in-depth. There's also the matter of the added support for Folding@home - Stanford University's ongoing project to use part of the PS3's massive cell processing power to study protein folding to help further research into diseases like AlzheimerÂ’s Disease, ParkinsonÂ’s Disease, and Huntington's Disease.
Lastly, we reiterate on 1.6's update to the Remote Play function on the PlayStation Portable. In earlier firmware versions of Sony's PS3, PSP owners could only hook up wirelessly to the 60GB model so long as they were within its sensor range. In the upcoming 1.6 update, PSP owners can opt to use WiFi hotspots to connect with their PS3, which not only allows for greater mobility, but also allows 20GB owners to partake in the fun. Set your calendars for March 22.

You can Rip, but thats not all, you can actually transfer mp3 files to your HDD and the same goes for photo files and video files. Unlike the 360 that can only stream from your PC. I might as well look at my photos and video files on my PC if I have to stream everything. Either that or buy content from Microsoft.

Unlike Xbox360, you are restricted to streaming windows video and audio files. Meaning the only video you can stream are WMV files. Thats not likely to change either.

There's also a lot of features that the PS3 has that the 360 is missing. Like the ability to transfer saves to any kind of flash memory as opposed to an overpriced, puny memory card. Also the built in wi-fi and Blu-Ray player. Not to mention wireless controllers regardless of which SKU you get. The list goes on and on.

Have you ever seen the difference between upconverted DVD and BD? But then again I wouldnt be surprised if most people thought there was no difference. Upconverted DVD's requires the use of all of the PS3's RAM because it has no hardware scaler therefore it must do software scaling which is very memory intensive.

Seem stupid? yes indeed it does, but everyone here has a f*cking agenda which pisses me off! I thought that 360 would be better, but it came out, bought one home for the weekend and it froze from overheating. What kind of impression does that give a consumer. In the world of consumer electronics that product would typically be abandoned but somehow MS managed their bad reputation rather well. Sony has failed completely in this regard maybe due to the American media having a preference of American companies over Japanese. Consider this though, who makes all of those parts that make up your 360 and who is on the other end of the helpline. Never Americans so patritism doesnt seem like its the answer. Maybe last generation PS2 won because it was cheaper and thats why it CONTINUES to sell VERY well. People want more for less and that will never stop. All of this publicity does not matter at all when Sony is at the disadvantage of a higher consumer cost and a loss of money per console sold.

The 360 CAN play video files from a CD or DVD disc, portable device, or stream it from a PC. You can view pictures from a CD or DVD disc, digital camera, portable device, or stream it from a PC. You can listen to music from a CD, iPod or nearly any other portable device. Good try though.
unless you dont pay for your electricity then its not free at all! You get the software for free, but you have to pay for the electricity and your internet connection. But at $50 a year to support such a project isnt that bad at all. You could write it off... somehow...
Sorry guys, why would anyone sit around not being able to use their ps3 online, just because at some point in the future they can play roms/homebrew. Don't you get it, this is a next generation system, with HD graphics. If ya want to play old games, play them on an old system. I can play almost anything on my PSP, why should I sacrifice all the gameplay of my nice expensive ps3 waiting for some cheapskate to come out with a loader? I'd rather just PAY for the games that come out, and enjoy them, than worry about the constant battle between hackers and sony to make these things work.

It was cool with PS2 games, but these new games take up a LOT more space and look a lot better. Just pay for them, they are worth it (most of them :) )

The only thing the PS3 does better than other systems is calculate folding protien strains. That's why I call it a $600 folding protien calculator. It's a poor gaming system, poor PC replacment, and even has freezing problems with the blu ray player!
All I said is I do not own the folding protien calculator, so I'm not aware of ALL it's features.

Just like playstation home, tecnically it's free. All you get is a basic virtual apartment and a bland selection of clothes for your avatar. I'm curious how much sony will charge for basic upgrades. There will be advertising almost everywhere (already confirmed.) The games you can play with other virtual friends are very limited like 3 point basketball shooting and may also cost extra. All sony did was take some of the most important features from XBOX live and make a cheezy microtransactio n world to encourage you to pay for the playstation network, while still saying it's free. One useless feature is you can invite your virtual friends to watch a movie. Is that any different from renting the movie and calling each other? You also have to exit out of home and then start a game to play together online!
PSN and live both have chat via video, audio, or text. What else can home offer? Not much.
You have all these astranomical expectations from sony, but all I'm doing is bringing you back to earth.
Where's the custom background, and closing your ps3 remotly with your psp, and transfer things ps3 to ps3 via internet, and a sleep mode, and upscaling ps2 games to 720p, and.... I think there's lots updates to come.
But for all Xbox 360 loves trying to diss the PS3, don't forget that your Xbox360 is in it's last year. After halo3 it's dead. If it's not already broken.

You are such a tool. Dissing folding@home is downright low. Its helping research for some pretty serious diseases. Maybe you don't have anybody in your family thats had one of these diseases but if you did wouldn't you like to help speed up the process of possibly finding a cure? Also, nobody is forcing you to use folding@home so your complaints about buying a protein folding calculator are pointless, like many of the other things you say. Oh, you must have also missed the part about Home being a central launchpad for PS3 games, meaning you and your friends can get together anywhere in home and launch a game together. Home will whoop Xbox live and you know it. I actually do have both consoles and like many other people prefer the PS3. Is that so hard for you to believe? Online gameplay is downright better on PS3 for one thing and the best part is it doesn't freeze, ever. Don't even say s.h.i.t. about the games because the damn thing has only been out for four and half months. So for four and half months having, Resistance(kill er launch game, unprecedented multiplayer) and Motorstorm(the best racing game on any console period) isn't shabby at all. Not to mention Tekken and Virtua Fighter 5(blows away DOA) if you like fighting games. Sorry you can't really say that about the 360 in the same time period because it had horrible launch games. Do every body a favor , go jack off on your 360 like you always do and accept the fact that the PS3 is well built, media rich, ultimate gaming machine.

to end all fighting i will talk about the consoles. Ps3 is amazing in its grafx and computer capabilities. cons- it is expensive to make games for. Xbox 360. x360 does have hd power and great online and is a perfect middle system. cons- made by micro$oft. Wii is the ultimate system for kids under 13. It is a fun system w/ motion sensing (like ps3 but better). cons- very few gamess. horrible controls on sum games. Iz gaining support with developers.
the perfect console would be the wii60. the wii60 would be a wii with hd power and cum wit a hard drive. The wii60 also needs viva pinata, gears of war, and sony games. the wii60 also needs great online play for free.

A Folding Calculator??? You have much to learn about research and scientific study. It's amazing regarding the support Sony is providing to the medical community with their "calculator." The number of years it took to study PCR and the human genome in general is vast and still not complete. Pretty damn close though. To actually visualize how the proteins fold advances our abilities to find solutions to disease states as well as discredit assumptions made in the past that linked symptoms to certain conditions. But i suppose you already have all the answers with your pathetic excuse for an xbox360, sold by a liar and a theif. The study of proteins will not only head up the approach to finding a cure for cancers, but also for other diseases. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is directly linked to protein folding, remember a little epidemic known as mad cow disease? well...that's CJD. Enough said. If you dont like the PS3 or what Sony is doing, why dont you play around with your rinky dink xbox360 and leave sites like these alone. On PS3 you can rip your cd's to either AAC, MP3, or ATRAC. You can also download the album and song titles in a couple seconds too. It is easy. I have about 60 albums on my PS3. Another good thing is you can organise them too. I'm sure we will see new games that will allow you to use your music in the game. Look at Playstation Home. You can insert video, pictures, and music in the virtual 3D world in HD. I can't wait for that in the future.

Listen...this is very simple...this is why playstation is better. I have the Wii, the 360 and the PS3. I don't have the PSP yet...i'll probably wait until the next one comes out...but back to the original statement...playstation is better because:
When i play the 360 it rocks; it takes care of it's main purpose which is games (currently lovin' Home Court) but if there were no games (kind of like Playstations current situation) i'd never turn it on. Sure you can stream some music and video from your media enabled windows PC (though the video formats suck) and you can store a couple songs on the hard drive or download some videos or demos..it's just lifeless and bland. The playstation has been out for 5 months now and i rarely play games on it (i know it's because they don't exist) I can always turn it on and find something to do. Browse the internet, digg, youtube...etc, watch the latest family guy, south park, snl, whatever. I have thousands of songs and pictures loaded. I admit that i originally bought it for blu-ray (which is friggin awesome Casino Royale Rocks) but i seem to always turn the playstation on before the 360.. (though i admit I turn the 360 on before the wii. The sparkle of the wii is pretty much gone except for the old games) anyways...i'm bored of this...Gears of war rocks...but I'm lovin' the other GOW right now God of War 2 rules...sleep time.. bye...*****es!

Last year for the XBOX 360? Why would Microsoft discontinue the biggest selling HD game console there is? The next XBOX only adds HDMI and cooler running chips. That's the dumbest "prediction" I've ever heard.

I was wondering when this new remote play comes out will I be able to give my wifi password to other people so they can use my remote play on their psp. If so that would be crazy considering the fact that people can give out their codes so that anybody all over the world can use it and they'll all no it's yours. Learn to watch videos and read posts from actual Game NEWS websites...

Sure it might be lacking in some areas, but it's getting there and will be there soon.
But it won't stop there.
It will keep improving because Sony has shown that they are out to make it the best.
How many improvements has the 360 made since it came out? Not many.
So if in one year Sony can meet or surpass the Xbox in practically everything (keep in mind the 360 had a 1 year head start) imagine where it will be in the years to come.
Also, right now the PS3's superiority can't be seen in its games. In fact some 360 games might even look better. But that's temporary.
Game developers are having a hard time right now making games for the PS3. Much like they did when the PS2 first came out. But they'll catch on, and when they do there will be no question about which system is better.
Will the 360 be eventually killed? I don't think so, at least not in America. But it will, in the end, be a lesser system.
